The Seminole Messenger October 2009
Words from your pastor: New Youth Director: It is with real pleasure to share with folks that one of our own has been chosen to serve our youth as our part-time youth director. We welcome Jacob Cole to the church staff and encourage all to keep him and our youth ministry in your prayers. I know that Jacob will be a blessing to our church in so many ways.
The Bible from Scratch: Our first adult study of the Fall, on Wednesday nights introduces the New Testament in an overview fashion, lasting for eight sessions. Come for supper beginning at 6pm in Allen Hall and stay for the adult Bible study from 6:45-7:30 (we meet in the first floor chapel classroom). All you need is a good study Bible.
Pastor’s Blog: I write a blog for our church (www.shumc.org) and frequently post articles and
share my thoughts and insights. You can usually also find a copy of each week’s bulletin (typically posted on Fridays or Saturdays just prior to that specific Sunday) as well as the monthly newsletter. There are also links to other websites relevant to our church (the national UMC web page, information from the Florida Conference, UMW, etc.) During this past summer, I frequently highlighted where we were in following David in his stories as I preached from the Old Testament.
MFSA: Those who have been connected with the Methodist church for some time might be familiar with an organization named the Methodist Federation for Social Action (MFSA). I have been active in this organization for most of my ministry and was recently elected as a national leader. I will be attending the annual “Program Council” meeting (includes representatives from each US annual conference which has an active chap-
Charge Conference planned for Our annual Charge Conference has been scheduled by our District Superintendent for Thursday evening, October 29, beginning at 7pm. We will be the host church for four other churches in the area, and will begin with a joint time of worship at 7pm in our sanctuary. A Charge Conference is the historical annual meeting of each
Methodist Church and the occasion when officers are elected, the pastor’s compensation is set, changes in the formal church membership are announced (baptisms, deaths, new members, etc), and reports are reviewed and approved.
ter) at the UMC Center in Nashville, Tennessee, Oct. 14-17. The MFSA helped in creating the Methodist Social Creed in 1909 (included in the United Methodist Book of Discipline) and was a major force in exposing the political excesses and horrors of the McCarthy years in the 1950’s. MFSA has offices on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC and provides a major witness for social justice and advocacy for our United Methodist Church. You can read more about this national organization at www.mfsaweb.org.

Our Annual Flea Market is Coming Up! Saturday, October 10, 8:00 am We need your stuff; we need workers before and during; we need shoppers! Now is the time to clean out your closets, garages, kitchens, drawers, attics, etc. and bring your unwanted stuff in for the sale. Some of the items needed include: Small (working) appliances, kitchen wares, dishes, toys, books, tools, knick knacks, craft supplies, pictures, sports equipment, exercise equipment, baby items, furniture and appliances.
Please note--Big items (furniture and appliances) must not be brought in until the morning of the sale, and you must be prepared to remove the items at the end of the day if they do not sell. (The donation places that pick up our leftovers will not take big items.) Please call Jane Brown, 237-4238 to volunteer to help sort and price and/or to help set up and help sell on the big day!
(No clothing, please)

Our Fall Bazaar is Coming November 14 Now is the time to get busy with your crafts, your sewing projects, grooming your plants, making pickles, jams and jellies. As you complete various projects you may bring them in and leave them on the benches near the craft closet at the back of Allen Hall. This year we are hoping to have more baked goods than in recent years. These are always good sellers, so we’re hoping for pies,
brownies, cookies, cakes, speciality breads, etc. Those items should be brought in the morning of the bazaar, but it isn’t too early to be thinking of what you want to make and start purchasing the ingredients when you do your shopping. Need a craft idea? See Jane Brown or Jayne Braddy. They may even have some of the supplies on hand that you will need.
We always need many hands to make our bazaar a success, so please plan to work at home on projects, help organize and set up in Allen Hall, tell your friends about our bazaar, AND come on down to shop on bazaar day!

Inside Story Headline This story can fit 150-200 words. One benefit of using your newsletter as a promotional tool is that you can reuse content from other marketing materials, such as press releases, market studies, and reports. While your main goal of distributing a newsletter might be to sell your product or service, the key to a successful newsletter is making it useful to your readers. A great way to add useful content to your newsletter is to develop and write your own articles, or include a calendar of upcoming events or a special offer that promotes a new prod-
uct. You can also research articles or find “filler” articles by accessing the World Wide Web. You can write about a variety of topics but try to keep your articles short. Much of the content you put in your newsletter can also be used for your Web site. Microsoft Publisher offers a simple way to convert your newsletter to a Web publication. So, when you’re finished writing your newsletter, convert it to a Web site and post it. Caption describing picture or graphic.
Inside Story Headline This story can fit 100-150 words. The subject matter that appears in newsletters is virtually endless. You can include stories that focus on current technologies or innovations in your field. You may also want to note business or economic trends, or make predictions for your customers or clients. If the newsletter is distributed internally, you might comment
upon new procedures or improvements to the business. Sales figures or earnings will show how your business is growing. Some newsletters include a column that is updated every issue, for instance, an advice column, a book review, a letter from the president, or an editorial. You can also profile new employees or top customers or vendors.

Inside Story Headline This story can fit 75-125 words. Selecting pictures or graphics is an important part of adding content to your newsletter. Think about your article and ask yourself if the picture supports or enhances the message you’re trying to convey. Avoid selecting images that appear to be out of context. Microsoft Publisher includes thousands of clip art images from
which you can choose and import into your newsletter. There are also several tools you can use to draw shapes and symbols. Once you have chosen an image, place it close to the article. Be sure to place the caption of the image near the image.

READY, SET, GO!
It seems that way with every new job, new school year, or just the fall season itself. There are tons of things to do and not enough minutes in the day to do it all. I’ve found that for our youth, they have sports, school, church, clubs, and volunteering. Our Youth group has started with Wednesday night Bible study, 7-8pm (this is for mid-high and high school), on Sundays, Sunday school-type discussion group, 9-10am, and United Methodist Fellowship, 5-7 pm. There is a great retreat Nov. 14-16 called “Crosstrainers” at Warren Willis Youth Camp in Leesburg; we require at least 5 youth registered by Nov. 2—cost is $100. Lake Junaluska United Methodist Retreat Center has an awesome New Years Launch Dec. 31—Jan. 3 called “Ski Junaluska!”. They have an inspirational program and fun ski experience; it is approximately $250 and the minimum group size is 10, and we have to register by Dec. 1 with a $50 deposit. October 9th we will have a tailgate for high school football outside the church. Come eat some food, play tailgate games, listen to music, and talk with friends. INVITE friends, neighbors, enemies, whoever; I will give you flyers you can hand out when you invite people. To see our schedule, upcoming events, and pictures from previous events visit our blog at seminoleheightsyouth.blogspot.com. If you ever have a question, comment, complaint, or you want to volunteer—-call me at 813 785-0269 or e-mail
[email protected]. Please pray for me as youth director and our youth: that we can grow our numbers, expand our activities, and strengthen our walk with Christ. —Jacob Cole
