THIS A COPY OF A 1941 FRESHMAN ENGLISH THEME PAPER I WROTE Late one summer evening in the year 1814 the circular entrance hall of The Ocatgon House in Washington D.C. resounded with the conversation and laughter of many distinguished gentlemen and elegant ladies. They represented the official life of the nation's capital: diplomats, scholars, and statesmen whose names and deeds have echoed down through the corridors of history to this day. The war with England was at an end and the occasion was one of the many brilliant social functions held in the Octagon, which was the then the temporary home of President Madison and his wife, Dolly.
