Class: eight

Task Nº1: The school Refer to the general background of the school in a clear and brief way. Describe: •

Address: Aquiles Ramírez s/n, Cerro San Juan de Dios, Valparaíso. The school is located in a very poor area with no recreational areas. For this reason, this sector is full of drugs and alcohol.

Organisation: San Judas Tadeo School.

Student population: in total, 176.

Head Mistress: Nora Azúa Torres.

Modality: pre-kinder to eight grades.

Task Nº2: The classroom Comment about: •

The atmosphere of the room: in general it is not very good. The students are always playing and talking and even fighting. But when the guide teacher or any teacher comes into the classroom, they behave.

The levels of engagement in the room: sadly, they do not have too much commitment for that particular subject. They are always saying things such as: “I don’t like this subject” or “I don’t care about learning anything”.

Students seating: they sit in pair and because the students are very few, they have a lot of space to use.

Space: Like I said before the space is not that big but because they are a few. They have space to do different activities.

Whiteboard location: the whiteboard is located in front of the whole class. So, they do not have any problem to see it.

Classroom equipment: in this classroom is used for two different levels. In the morning, eight grader and in the afternoon first grader. They have twelve double sits in total and their respective chairs. They have three windows. So they have a very good visibility. They have a whiteboard and an eraser. And they also have a bookshelf with old books in it. But in a second one they have their classroom material and new books for their different subjects.

Task Nº3: The teacher Describe the following: •

Classroom routine: the guide teacher does not have any particular routine but she develops different activities during the class.

Motivation activities performed: they do not have any kind of motivations.

Learning activities conducted: they try to follow the teacher’s directions but after a while, they loose they motivation because like a student told me “I fell ridiculous talking something that I don’t know”.

Material resourced used: they use; the book gave by the government and they have four English-Spanish dictionary.

Stages of the lesson: I did see one.

Task Nº4: The learners In this observation task, focus on the things that help to create conditions for effective learning and on the aspects that play a part in preventing learning. •

How motivated are the learners? Why?

A: sadly, they do not have a very high motivation. I believe they do not have good motivations because of their relationship with their parents. They have a very low self-esteem.

Are they taking part in their own learning? How?

A: absolutely not. They do it because they have to be there.

Are they expecting the teacher to do the work for them?

A: yes, they are. They take too much time in one simple activity. They wait until the teacher looses her patient and give them the answers. And I also have to add, that they forgot their learning too quick.

Do they like to participate in group work? If so, how do they behave?

A: I did not see one.

What kinds of learning activities do the students like the most? What do they like the least?

A: like I said before they do not have any motivation in learning English I for that reason they always are saying that they do not like anything. And actually I saw no motivation at all. Their behaviour is a vicious circle.
