Awareness Week NSS is always known for its awareness activities. Several days are observed with great importance by our NSS unit. From 11th to 14th of May an awareness week was conducted under the auspicious of NSS unit. The subject chosen where importance of blood donation, ill effects of drug abuse, unity in diversity etc. Students of our college made posters on all the above topics and they were exhibited so that the society can think on these topics once again.
Quiz Competition A quiz competition was conducted for the NSS volunteers especially for the newly enrolled on 15th May 2018. Understanding the importance of plastic and pollution; it was chosen as the subject for the quiz.
Mazhavillu: Transgender Empowerment Program Government of Kerala, Social Justice Department launched a new project named “Mazhavillu” for the empowerment of the transgender community. It was on 17th May 2018 and students of our college was lucky enough to volunteer that event conducted at Nishagandhi auditorium. Mazhavillu promises a helpline, a crisis management center and Transgender cell. The cell is for coordination of existing projects and for creating innovating policies for transgender communities. The program was launched by Hon. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
World Environment Day
June 5 of every year is regarded as the world environmental day. The growing rate of pollution, global warming etc. are considered as main social issues faced by the society today. Accepting the importance of this day, students of our NSS unit planted trees and made vegetable garden at different parts of our campus. This activity was a new experience for many of the students and made them aware of the importance of protecting our nature.
Yoga Day India is regarded as the birth place of yoga. 21st June of every year is regarded as yoga day and for this year the theme was “yoga for peace”. Yoga helps in controlling our mind and reducing stress. It has a great significance in student life. As part of this, our unit conducted yoga session on 21st morning. All the volunteers of our unit participated in the event. It was a new experience for all the students.
Traffic Awareness Campaign The increased number of road accidents and death of people mainly youngsters is a matter to be dealt with great concern. Simple negligence can cause very serious causalities and organizations like NSS has very important role to play in such social issues. The students of our NSS unit on 26 of June 2018 conducted a road awareness campaign for the drivers mainly two wheeler users. We distributed booklets to the vehicles passed by and recommended the drivers without helmets to use them. We strongly feel that this activity had a great impact on the public.
Meeting for Program Officers and Volunteer Secretaries NSS technical cell Kerala had conducted a state level mega camp at different hospital in Trivandrum during the month of July. In association with this camp a meeting was conducted for the program officers and volunteer secretaries from different colleges under technical cell in our college auditorium. It was on 10th July 2018. About 100 Volunteer Secretaries and 40 Program officers participated in the above meeting. Ajitha S the director of NSS technical cell Kerala addressed the gathering and several decisions regarding the conduction of camp was taken in that meeting.
Cleaning Activity near the health Center A cleaning activity was conducted near the health center in the campus on 26th July. Above 50 volunteers participated in the activity. The doctor and staffs of the health center helped the students and also congratulated them for their effort.
Plantation Activity As a part of agricultural promotion program and beautification of the campus NSS volunteers cleaned the campus of UCE Kariavattom and banana trees were planted. It was new experience for the students. This activity helped the students to interact more with the nature and understand the value of hard work.
Hiroshima Day Hiroshima day is now a focus for anti-war and anti-nuclear discussions and demonstrations. Sticking on to the motto “Let there be peace and may it begin with me” our students conducted Hiroshima DAY campaign with an awareness class on topic world peace on 6th August 2018.
National Youth Day Youth is always the strength and power of a nation. Human resource is the greatest resource for a country like India. So National Youth Day is to be observed with great significance. We conducted a blood donation camp at our college on National Youth Day; 12th August 2018. Several students and staff of our college became part of this event making it a big success. This activity helped in spreading the importance of blood donation and made the staff and students aware of the importance of being a healthy donor.
Independence Day & Onam Celebration From the thought of celebrating the Independence Day in a different way we visited a school for the mentally challenged children called Shajeevan run by Sri Brahmanayakam Mahadevan. Almost all the volunteers visited the school and spent a day with the students there. Also volunteers had Onam Sadhya with the students there.
Flood Relief Camp The month of August was the hardest of all time Kerala has passed through;The flood. The newspapers and the media all over the world praised the wholehearted involvement of the youth in the flood related activities. NSS volunteers was the largest among this young force. The students from our college worked at different collection centers all over Trivandrum including the women’s college Vazhuthakkadu, Priyadarshini Auditorium, East fort etc. it was great opportunity for all our volunteers to understand once again their responsibilities as the citizens of our nation.
Teacher’s Day Celebration Teacher’s day was conducted by the students of our college on 5th September. Students wished the teachers with flowers and sweets. Such observation days are important in preserving the lost social values in the society, conducting such a celebration at the college level was a different for both teachers and students. This activity helped improving the relationship between the students and teachers.
Campus Cleaning A cleaning program and awareness class was conducted for the students of NSS unit under the guidance of the health inspectors from Pangapara government Health Center on 14th September. Students cleaned the campus and the surroundings, collected plastic waste and also mosquito elimination activities were done according to the instructions given.
Engineers Day Being an engineering college it is very relevant to understand the duties and responsibilities of engineers. On 15th September a seminar was conducted on the topic “Engineering; A new perspective”. About 100 students of the college participated in the seminar and the seminar helped the students to see the course in a new perspective.
Ozone Day & Global Warming Global warming is one of the serious environmental issues faced by the world countries today. Proper awareness program are significant these days to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. An awareness rally was conducted on 16th September. All the NSS volunteers of the college participated in the event making it a grant success.
NSS Day Celebration National Service Scheme(NSS) is an Indian Government sponsored public service program which aims to instill the idea of social welfare in students an d to provide service to society without bias. 24th of September being NSS day is an occasion of great pride for all the NSS volunteers. On that day a flag hoisting ceremony was conducted in the college. Our Associative program officer Sri Rohini P S hoisted the flag and Addressed the gathering. She talked about the selfless services the NSS volunteers are supposed to give to the society. Also sweets were distributed among the students and various cultural programmes were conducted.
Collection of Items for the Flood Affected Areas A group of volunteer collected study materials including books, pencils, pens, bags etc. for the students of the flood affected areas from the local people of Kazhakkoottam and Kariavattom and the same was handed over to the collector too.
Inauguration Green Campus Clean Campus Green Campus Clean Campus a project launched by the government of Kerala in association with Kerala state NSS and Suchithwa mission was inaugurated on 2nd October by the Hon. Minister K .T Jaleel in our college auditorium. The arrangements for the same was done by the volunteers of our NSS unit on October 1st and 2nd. Volunteers from various schools and colleges participated in the event. The afternoon section was a cleaning program conducted under Bhrama Nayakam Mahadevan a professional trainer.
National Digital library of India User Awareness Workshop NDLI a project under human resource and development of India aims to integrate several national and international digital libraries in one web portal. As part of this an awareness workshop was conducted for the students of our college by the NSS unit on 16th October.
World Food Day As a part of world food day, ‘Pothichoru’ was distributed for the inmates of ‘Karunya’ Old Age Home. Students spend a whole day with the people there, it was a great experience of pride and satisfaction. NSS volunteers brought food from their home for this activity. This activity helped in enhancing the social commitment among the NSS volunteers.
National Unity Day National unity day was celebrated in the campus by conducting a poster designing competition for the NSS volunteers of the campus. Students made beautiful posters describing the cultural diversity, linguistic diversity and India’s unity. Prizes were distributed by Associate Program Officer Rohini P S.
Keralappiravi Dinaghosham Quiz competition was held among the NSS volunteers as a part of Keralappiravi dinaghosham on the topic Kerala GK. The students participated as groups of two. Questions included Kerala history, culture of different places and Malayalam literature. It was great opportunity for the students to know better the history, culture and tradition of Kerala.
Flood Related Activities About 50 volunteers actively participated in unloading materials for flood affected areas. A train containing food, water cans and clothes for the flood affected areas reached Kochu veli railway station and our volunteers helped in unloading it.
Children’s day Celebration As a part of Children’s day celebration , our volunteers visited ‘Kripalayam’ home for girls Chavadimukku. Gifts and sweets were distributed among the children’s of the Kripalayam and the volunteers had splendid time there.
Releasing of the Book “Ente Jeevitha Nombaram” A book written by Geethu Krishna a girl suffering from muscular dystrophy , published by Kerala Social Security Mission and Social Justice Department Kerala and Distributed by National Service Scheme Technical cell and University college of Engineering Karyavattom was published on 15th November by Hon. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Nishagandhi Open air Auditorium Trivandrum. Volunteers of our NSS unit helped in hosting the event and distributing the books.
World AIDS Day An awareness class on AIDS day and blood donation was conducted by Trivandrum District NSS and SCT College at Vailoppilly Smaskrithi Bhavan on 1st December. Classes were led by Doctors from Trivandrum medical college. They talked on
importance of being safe donors and hence prevent the spread of different diseases including AIDS. Students from different colleges under Technical cell participated in the mime competition held.
Energy Conservation Day Energy crisis being an important problem faced by our society, an energy management seminar was conducted for the students of our college. Sreelakshmi P S Nair a student of our college lead the seminar and booklets were distributed among the students. Swachatha Mission survey As a part of Swachatha Mission a project of State Government Kerala, a survey was conducted to identify the areas where cleanliness is a major issue. Volunteers from our college was a part of this survey, visited several areas in and around Trivandrum city and collected data.
Artificial Limb Fixing Camp Rotary club of Trivandrum conducted an artificial limb fixing camp on 6th January 2019. Volunteers from our college helped the club in conducting the event. The camp was inaugurated by Hon. Minister Sri Kadakampally Surendran.
National Integration Camp NSS is always known for conducting national level camps, one among this is the National Integration camp. It aims to spread the message of national integration among students. Volunteers from about 11 states participated in the camp conducted at Sathya Sai Arts and Science College Thonnakkal Trivandrum. 8 students represented technical cell Kerala and among them 2 were from our college. Anand A B of 3rd year IT and Dimble Scaria of 3rd year CSE were the students. It was a 7 days camp from 8th to 16th December.
STATE LEVEL MEGA CAMP State level Punarjani Mega Camp was conducted from 13-07-2018 to 17-07-2018. The camp was held at various hospitals including Government Medical College
Trivandrum and Government Ayurveda College Trivandrum. The camp was Inaugurated by Hon. Education Minister C Ravindranath in the presence of State NSS program officer Dr. K Sabukkuttan ,Director of NSS tech cell Smt. Ajitha S and other dignitaries. Of the 400 volunteers from all over the state participated in the camp and among them 20 were from our college. An asset of about more than 1 crore was created by this camp. This camp gave the volunteers a sense of achievement as they proved to be hardworking, tireless and sincere.
NSS SPECIAL CAMP 2018-19
Minicamp A minicamp was successfully organized from 22-06-2018 to 24-06-2018 at regional Institute of Ophthalmology Trivandrum. This minicamp was a part of Punarjani scheme of NSS technical cell Kerala. It was a great event and the hospital authorities were immensely grateful for the undistinguished service of volunteers. The valedictory function was held on 25-06-2018 and was inaugurated by the ward counsellor.
Seven Day Special Camp A seven day Punarjani camp was conducted from 21-12-2018 to 27-12-2018 at Mental Health Center Trivandrum. The camp started on 21-12-2018 Friday at 11.00 AM with Vilambara Jadha. About 55 volunteers participated in the camp. With great excitement and a little fear, our volunteers reached the mental hospital at 01.00 PM.A set of rules and guide lines were given to the volunteers by the hospital authorities as they were going to spend the upcoming 7 days with patients who are mentally unstable. The camp was inaugurated by ward counsellor in the presence of superintendent, Nursing superintendent and the other officials of the hospital. The camp started with a motivational speech by the head warden Sri. Santhosh Kumar. The first day
ended by group activities under the guidance of volunteer secretaries Anand A B and Dimble Scaria and the students were divided in to 5 different groups. The second day started with a visiting the hospital inmates. This was a great experience for the volunteers as they met patients with different mental conditions. The head ward accompanied the students in visiting the entire hospital premise of 37 acres. After lunch a clear evaluation of the list of equipment’s was taken. A crisp and clear plan prepared for the repair and repainting of the equipments. The day ended with an orientation class by Mr. Manoj, NSS technical cell Instructor.
The 3rd day started by allotting each set of volunteers with their respective list of equipment to be repaired and repainted. The volunteers were provided with mask and gloves to prevent the risk of infection and allergy. The volunteers took their duties and in process they learned about the different situation at the hospitals and met the patients with generosity. The day ended by orientation session conducted by Prasanth Sir and Sreelakshmi P S Nair. The 4th day was Christmas and the volunteers celebrated Christmas with the patients and the hospital officials and with an NGO Nanma Charitable trust. The volunteers continued their duties with great sincerities and devotion. The 5th and 6th day, new wards were assigned to different groups of volunteer. The volunteers rejuvenated beds, tables, trolleys, BP apparatus, fans, freezer, drip stands, etc. They had also done different welding works at the hospital. They cleaned switch boards, waiting rooms, etc. the orientation classes conducted were so delightful for all the students. The hospital authorities gave the students classes regarding mental health and importance of a stress free and peaceful life. On the 7th day of the Punarjani camp the volunteers continued to be eager, enthusiastic and attended their respective assignments. After lunch the valedictory function was held in the presence of superintendent, nursing superintendent, head warden, PO, APO and other dignitaries .The superintendent congratulated the volunteers for their discipline and sincerity in work and also invited the students to come over again. The hospital authorities were also thankful for the rejuvenation work done by the volunteers. The volunteers themselves thanked the authorities,
staffs of the college, teachers for their continuous persuasion and motivation throughout the camp. The volunteers said that the worried faces of patients there gave them immense motivation even during the time they were tired. An asset of 15 lakhs were created during the camp. The volunteers returned from the camp with rejuvenated mind.
