Naval Medical Center– Lakers Visit The Los Angeles Lakers made a stop at Naval Medical Center to visit the wounded warriors. The entire team surprised the patients and staff as the Army and Marines played each other in basketball. The Lakers cheered on the patients, gathered for a photo and autograph opportunity, and make a special visit to a few inpatients that were unable to come to the gym. It was an amazing time for everyone, and we appreciate their support for our military! Lakers player, Kobe Bryant, is presented with an autographed photo collage from the NMC Patients.

The teammates stop to look at action photos taken in Afghanistan. When a combat injured soldier was asked what happened to his leg, he handed the players the photos so they could see for themselves.

On October 27th, the ASYMCA, Hall of Champions, and South Bay YMCA hosted a special screening of the Chargers movie for San Diego families which included a special appearance by Chargers Defensive Back Steve Gregory.

Holiday Treasures Craft Fair

All Souls Episcopal Church was packed with art, food, jewelry, and crafts on October 24th for the annual Holiday Treasures Craft Fair benefiting the San Diego ASYMCA. Many visitors began their holiday shopping early this year with purchases of homemade birdhouses, flower vases, and cranberry potpourri.

Naval Medical Center The proceeds, $12,075 from Low Tide Ride and Stride annual race in Coronado was donated to Armed Services YMCA in support of Naval Medical Center C5 Program. At the Coronado Rotary Luncheon held in the Del Coronado, Rotarians present the generous check, pictured left to right: Howard Somers, Cherri Barnswell, Jennifer Town, Ken Macleod and Mike Woiwode.

The staff and volunteers at Naval Medical Center were pleased to bring Halloween to the Pediatric Wards and Clinics. This year, thanks to a generous donation from Trevor’s Toy Box, the children at NMC celebrated a Happy Halloween and even helped the staff decorate the wards and clinics. Volunteers helped children decorate pumpkins, witches and ghosts and passed out fun trick or treat bags! Everyone enjoyed the spirit of Halloween and had a spooktacular time. We are proud to announce a new Massage Therapy Program for active duty men and women in treatment at Naval Medical Center. Mitch and Cassandra, our new volunteers, bring years of experience to this program.

Final thoughts... From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens: Each month, as I look at our SNAPSHOT, I ask myself “what if the San Diego Armed Services YMCA was not here?” I think of all the military families that we serve, I think of all the kids whose smiles and laughter clearly demonstrate the value of our programs. I think of the many families who benefit from our family counseling programs and the adoring looks in the eyes of so many daughters enjoying our annual Father Daughter Dance and the joy experienced by the families celebrating Christmas on June 25 at our The Christmas You Missed event for families separated by deployment on December 25th. It is obvious to me that the San Diego Armed Services YMCA makes a positive contribution to the lives of military families and must continue to work hard to maintain quality programs and meet the needs of military families. I am most thankful that we operate in San Diego, a strong community that supports the military. In spite of the current economic conditions, the San Diego Community continues to step forward with contributions to fund our programs. Lucky we live San Diego! As we approach Thanksgiving, let us all take time out to remember the men and women who wear the uniform of this great country and their families who support them. We owe it to them to stand ready to assist them as they endure extended deployments. As I always ask everyone, please help us ensure that every individual in the military knows about the Armed Services YMCA and our FREE programs that support military families. Thank you for your continued support!!!
