Thank God for Community by Rev. Dr. Jerry Black, Associate Minister

Last week was an emotionally and spiritually power packed week— and in the most unexpected way. The funerals for Dwite Morgan (Bicycle Bob) and Troy Smith were rich, wondrous expressions of compassion. They were obviously very different people with very different gifts and very different life goals. One lived to receive, the other to give. Yet both gave us something quite special. They gave us a profound sense of community.

In my opening sentences for Dwite’s funeral, I tried to capture that gift this way: “We have obviously gathered here because of a tragedy; and yet, it is a tragedy which reminds us that we are community. We live in a closer relationship and connectivity than sometimes I think we appreciate. Dwite A. Morgan, familiarly and fondly known to us as Bicycle Bob, obviously touched our lives. He inspired in us as sense of compassion and concern. He gave us a reason to reach beyond ourselves and be community. For that alone, we are forever in his debt.”

At the close of the week, and in the death of Troy Smith, we had yet another reminder that we are community. In Dwite we had a reason to give. In Troy, we had a reason to be givers; for he was a living, pervasive model of that which is at the very heart of what it means to be community— diligence, resourcefulness, compassion, and concern for others. He envisioned, achieved, acquired, and gave. He gave in more ways than we will ever be able to calculate or appreciate. He gave me a story. So he too enabled us to be community. Let us thank God for community— our community—a community of faith and compassion for all. Amen.

Operation Christmas Child Packing Party Hosted by FCC Edmond & KLove Radio 88.9 Friday, November 13, 5pm On Friday evening, November 13, we will host a packing party for Operation Christmas Child. KLOVE radio station, 88.9 will join us, and do a live broadcast. Everyone is invited. We will meet in Fellowship Hall at 5 p.m. You can come and go anytime. We have packed 182 boxes so far this year, but we still need your help. Please bring a few small items like: soap, toothbrushes, hard candy, children’s T-shirts, or caps, balls, dolls, matchbox cars, flashlights, or almost any item small enough to fit in a shoebox as long as it is child appropriate and non-perishable. The shoeboxes go to children in orphanages, churches, schools, or hospitals around the world. A booklet in the child’s own language titled “The Greatest Gift”, accompanies each box. This booklet tells of Jesus’ love and sacrifice for each of them.

The children share the Good News with extended families. Samaritan’s Purse has reported a 40% decision rate from the shoebox gifts. As a relay center, FCC will be accepting filled shoeboxes from other churches and families throughout the week of November 16 – 22. We are going to need help throughout the week to pack boxes in cartons. The cartons will then need to be transported to Bloom Electric at 9525 W. Reno (Reno and Morgan Rd.) on Saturday, Sunday, and possibly on Monday, November 23. If you can help during the week of Nov. 16-22, or would like more information as to how your children can fill a box for a needy child, please contact Michele Schlough at 844-3214.

Important IRA Deadline Approaching From the Stewardship Education Committee - Rob Ryland, Moderator

November 30, 2009 is the deadline to deposit IRA distributions taken inadvertently in 2009 for people over age 70 1/2. In December 2008 congress passed a law that allowed those over age 70 ½ who are taking required minimum distributions from their IRA to stop those distributions for 2009 only. Those over age 70 ½ who inadvertently took a distribution in 2009 can put it back in to their IRA by 11/30/2009 and avoid paying taxes on that distribution for 2009. Please consult your tax advisor for more information.

Each year, several churches in Edmond combine efforts to host a Community Thanksgiving Dinner. This shared meal is for anyone, but provides a special sense of community for singles, lonely college students, homebound, those far from home and others. Last year, over 3000 meals were served. The 2009 dinner will be held Thursday, Nov. 26, 11am to 3pm at the University of Central Oklahoma in the George Nigh Center. First Christian plays an active role in supporting the dinner. There are several ways you can get involved: 1) Donate food items 2) Contribute money to purchase food 3) Volunteer to work prior to the event, or on Thanksgiving day Specific details can be found at www.fccedmond.org/thanksgiving or at the Thanksgiving Dinner display in the church rotunda.
