Parish Advent Reconciliation Service “Come O Lord and set us free”
Friday, December 4th, 2009—7:00 PM Let’s start our Advent Journey with a new heart. Our Parish reconciliation Service is for the whole family. Our second graders will be receiving their First Reconciliation and the eighth graders will be attending as part of their Confirmation Preparation.
November 29, 2009
Why Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation? (Why not go directly to God?) Ten Good Reasons 1. Of course, go to God in prayer. We should do so each day. The Sacrament of Reconciliation calls for personal reflection and private prayer, too.
Page 3
Support Our Troops Thank You Operation Support Our Troops was a huge success thanks to the many generous parishioners who contributed. With your help, over 250 pounds of items for our troops in foreign countries and hospitals will be distributed. Included in these packages will be letters from grateful citizens. Your prayers are always needed for our military around the world.
2. There is Scriptural support for the Church possessing the ministry of forgiveness, including: Matthew 16:19 and 1 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 3. Writings and practices from the first generations of Christianity show a clear understanding of the Church as having the key role in conveying penance and reconciling the sinner with the community of faith. 4. Reconciliation to whom? To self, God and the community. Sin is not just about me and God. The priest represents the community (that has been fractured by one’s sin) in his role as confessor. 5. Being alone in the examination of our sinfulness, we may be apt to rationalize sin away…as well as to sometimes judge ourselves too harshly. 6. The penance given in the Sacrament of Reconciliation serves as a reminder that sorrow and forgiveness needs to connect with actions that orient us to a new way of living. 7. The Sacrament of Reconciliation offers a decisive moment of forgiveness in the sacramental process. 8. Experiencing understanding and forgiveness through the priest is often powerfully healing and freeing. The priest may offer insights which can result in a more hopeful perspective going forward. 9. In the case of serious (mortal) sin, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is necessary to restore us to spiritual well-being (state of grace). 10. The Sacrament of Reconciliation conveys a grace that strengthens us for living our baptismal identity more faithfully.
Join us for our Advent Reconciliation Service Friday, December 4; 7:00pm

Christ the King Parish Early Learning Academy Update Dear Parishioners and Friends, At this time of year with the Thanksgiving holiday it reminds me of how many blessings we have! I am very thankful to work at such a beautiful and Christ-centered early learning environment! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done to support the Academy! Many hands have created and nurtured this school! We have had the firemen from Lombard visit the students for fire safety and the Lombard library visit with special holiday stories and activities! Our council is off to a great start! Parents, staff and parishioners attended our last meeting to collaborate on Academy events. I appreciate your support! May God bless you and keep you safe, Mrs. Placey

Flu Season During the cold and flu season, parishioners are welcome to give a friendly nod instead of a handshake if they prefer. Please try to be sensitive to the choices of your neighbor during the sign of peace. Also, taking from the chalice is an option - but not a requirement. When we receive the host, it is the whole and entire Christ received. Receiving from the cup is referred to as a fuller symbol of the communion we share in Christ, but not necessary for full communion.

Gratitude The celebration of the Mass has always been enhanced by the music. It sets the whole environment for us to receive Christ. The Jubilee Mass with Bishop Peter truly was festive and prayerful. Thank you to Bill Runge, our Worship Director, who organized and worked together with all the CTK choirs, young children, experienced men, women and children who sang God’s praises. When we sing, we pray twice, St. Augustine tells us. At our Fiftieth Anniversary Mass, we prayed many times over. Thank you to our business manager, Elaine Ward, and our parish hospitality chair, Mary Maderak, for planning and serving at the celebration after Mass. Thanks also to Patti Kring and Penny Scarpiniti who helped at the reception. We are grateful to our photographers, Jun Penas and Tom Carroll, parishioners who captured the event. The parish staff did many things behind the scenes and kept the spirit of celebration alive. Thanks to the 50th Anniversary committee for all your hard work. The staff and all those who prepared for this moment hope that our parishioners had a wonderful celebration. You give us purpose in the work of Christ.
Christ the King The cantors, women’s schola, and jubilee choir, put their heart and soul into their prayer on our parish feast of Christ the King. Thank you to our assembly for your full and active participation on the Liturgy. From using the song books, to a loud “Amen!” tells Christ without any doubt that we love Him as our King. Let us continue to celebrate this Jubilee Year with great Joy and a spirit of Thanksgiving! Fr. Peter

Facts from the Past Did you know… Soon after Father John Ryan was named pastor in 1976, he shared the rectory on Highland Avenue and 16th Street with the newly ordained Father Robert Schoenstene. A third priest moved in, Father Felix, a French missionary priest who came to study at the nearby National College of Chiropractic. Tight quarters in the rectory and a request from the bishop prompted construction of a new rectory on Main Street. Father Felix later was sent to serve in Africa once he completed his studies.

Tell a friend...
Calendar Crunch
Think about the last good movie you saw. Certain aspects of that movie probably resonated with you well after the movie was over. It may be the humor, the drama, the acting, the suspense, etc. Whatever it was that you liked about the movie, it probably inspired you to talk about it with friends and family. You may have even encouraged them to see it, if they haven’t already. Why should Mass be any different than this movie example? Every week parishioners at Christ the King leave Mass spiritually fulfilled. They are thinking of the gospel, humming a song that was just heard, pondering the message from the homily, or enjoying the fellowship of other parishioners. Please be encouraged to talk about Mass like you would any other enjoyable experience of your life – a good movie, a nice meal at a restaurant, a vacation destination, and so forth. Share your joy and invite your friends, family, and neighbors to Mass with you.
We live in an era when calendars seem to rule our lives— the office calendar, the school calendar, the holiday calendar, the social calendar. Not surprisingly, many of us rely more and more on technology to help us keep track of all our various obligations and responsibilities. The new Church year begins today and the scriptures invite us to pause, slow down, and consider some of our core priorities as disciples of the Lord. Statistics show that, more than any previous generation in human history, we have disposable time to use how we choose. We are not tied to the unrelenting agricultural calendar of traditional farm work or to sixteen-hour days in factories, yet we often feel rushed and over-committed. This all comes down to how we use our God-given time. The readings today declare that God will fulfill the promises that God has made. Until that time of perfect justice, righteousness, and salvation comes upon us we are asked to do four things: to be alert at all times, not to give in to worry and distractions, to pray for strength, and to care lovingly for one another. So, as we prepare to celebrate again the coming of the Savior, think about the stewardship of time. Think back to third grade when we learned the difference between needs and wants, and realize how much the line has blurred between the two since then. Is your calendar too full? Streamline it by looking at it with an informed eye: What must you do and what would you like to do, and how can you put God first this Advent?
A Stewardship Prayer for Teens Lord and Source of All Gifts Lord and Source of all gifts, with faith in our future we, Your children rejoice in the fullness of Your generosity. We thank You for those whose lives are visible signs of Your love and blessings to others: our parents, our teachers, our Church. Make us good stewards of all we have received, generously sharing our unique gifts with others in a spirit of gratitude to You. Guide us today, tomorrow and everyday as we grow in our faith. Amen

Leaving a Legacy A young man was surprised to find his sick and elderly grandfather planting a small peach tree in his backyard. When the young man asked his grandfather why he was planting the tree, the old man replied, “Son, all my life I have eaten the fruit from trees that other people have planted. I figure I have an obligation to make sure there is some fruit around for others to enjoy.”
Four Ways to Leave a Legacy Did you know there are four easy ways for you to remember you parish in your will? 1. A specific Bequest – you can designate a certain amount of cash or specific assets to the parish. 2. A Residual Bequest – you can plan for the parish to receive all or a portion of your estate after other specific bequests have been distributed. 3. A Percentage Bequest – You can designate a certain percentage of the estate to go to the parish. 4. A Contingent Bequest – You can make the parish the recipient of a bequest if others named in your will are not living at the time of your death. No matter how you decide to remember your parish, a gift from your will accomplishes several key benefits. • It sends a strong message to your heirs that the Church played an important role in your life. • It guarantees that your generosity to the Church will be continued even after you are gone. • It provides important assistance to our parish. • It may even provide tax benefits to your heirs. Talk to your lawyer or financial counselor today about the best way for you to remember your parish in your will.

Deadline for Ten Commandment Brick Order The deadline for ordering bricks around the Ten Commandment Monument is December 31, 2009, not in March. We are planning to install the bricks in March weather permitting in time for Easter. Please place your order as soon as you can. It takes several weeks for the order to be processed by the brick engraver. Consider giving a brick as a gift to honor and commemorate your loved ones this season. The proceeds from the sale of the bricks will also help Christ the King meet its financial obligations.
Consider a Stock or Security Donation to Christ the King Church Direct gifts of stocks, mutual funds and other assets are simple for parishioners to make and can be very beneficial gifts for both the parish and the parishioner. Parishioner can designate a stock donation as an immediate gift OR use the donation to establish a life-benefit gift such as a Charitable Gift Annuity or a Remainder Trust. Donating appreciated securities to your parish can produce a tax- advantaged charitable deduction for the parishioner. Most securities donated to parishes are either common stocks or mutual funds. For more information please contact the finance council or Fr. Peter Jarosz. Thank you for the many ways you already share your treasure with the parish. Finance Council

To All Who Bring the Eucharist To the Sick and Homebound Christ the King Parish Liturgy Commission is making changes that concern the Ministers of Care in their Sacramental duty to take the Body of Christ to the sick and homebound. We all hold the Most Holy Eucharist with the deepest love and respect, and because of this we need to adjust our regular practices to come into line with the rules of the Church. Starting the first week of Advent (this weekend), the Ministers of Care will be sent out from Mass. When you arrive at Mass, please place your OPENED pyx on the platen in the Narthex (on the gift table) with the appropriate number of hosts for the people to be seen that day only. The platen will be brought forward for the Liturgy of the Eucharist and will be consecrated along with the hosts for the Mass. After the communion, Father will call the Ministers of Care forward for a special blessing and send them forth to the sick and homebound. You must leave at that time and go directly to the people to whom you serve. We at Christ the King Parish represent the Body of Christ and so must hold the Eucharist with the highest reverence. We all know the most appropriate place for the Eucharist is in its consumption. The Tabernacle is for extra Hosts from the current days Mass and should not contain more than necessary. It is most appropriate to make sure that the time between Consecration and consumption is kept at a minimum. You must understand that these changes are not meant to be punitive. They are in keeping with the guidelines of the Roman Catholic Church and it rubrics. May God bless you all for your service and dedication to the Eucharist which is the summit of our faith in Christ Jesus. Deacon Peter A. Robinson
Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign. ~ Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta
