The pictures are all powerful expressions of her themes, and are very varied. We will use selected pictures and her thoughts about them as the starting point for meditation. There will, as always, be music, candlelight and silence. Everyone is welcome to come. The meditations will be held on Sunday evenings at 6.00 pm at Cogden House, Market Place, Masham, and will last about one hour. Dates: March 31st; April 7th. The Art of Lent by Sister Wendy Beckett is published by SPCK and can be purchased on line; it is also available as an e-book.

REFLECTION Simeon’s prophecy starts well, with the kind of things any mother would want to hear about the future of her child. But it quickly changes mood: Jesus will suffer opposition, and Mary herself will feel the effects. The image of the sword that will pierce her heart is so vivid that you have to wonder about the fate of Simeon’s own children. There is nothing Mary can do about this, unless she chooses not to love her child, and so cease to be herself. That is the perpetual choice of love: it is costly, or it is nothing. QUESTIONS TO PONDER: How do you experience the love of God within your closest relationships? What does this tell you about the nature of God’s love? How has God been faithful to you over the course of your life? In what ways will you try to nurture your faith in the coming days? Who will you try to love and care for more tenderly this week? CHURCH ANNUAL MEETINGS For the election of churchwardens and members of the Parochial Church Council Nomination forms are at the back of each church Masham Sunday 7th April 2019 after the morning service Two members of the Parochial Church Council & one member of Deanery Synod to be elected Well with Snape Thursday 11th April 7.00 p.m. in Well Institute FOOD FOR THOUGHT St. Mary’s Church, Masham @ 7.00 p.m. Supper, followed by a talk. COLOSSIANS 3.12.-17 As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. LUKE 2.33-35 And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’
