ALLIANCE WORKING FOR YOU Alliance MLAs saved the Assembly from collapse in November 2001. We have shown that we are prepared to take risks for peace. Only Alliance has consistently supported in the Assembly free personal care for elderly, as is currently provided in Scotland. Alliance successfully proposed the appointment of a Children’s Commissioner to protect the interests of children in all aspects of government. Alliance is the only party to speak out against all illegal paramilitary flags and emblems. Stephen Farry Works • Ten years of local service as North Down Councillor, Deputy Mayor 2002-2003. • Age 32, and has a PhD in International Relations. • Alliance General Secretary and Justice Spokesperson, and has worked on democracy projects in Croatia and Bosnia. • Combines the fresh approach and new ideas, with the experience and knowledge of local issues. • Policy interests in community relations, economic development, transport and the environment. • Acted to ensure the election of a pro-Agreement MP for North Down in 2001, and to secure the future of the Agreement.

Eileen Bell Works • Alliance Deputy Leader, former Party President, Chair and General Secretary. • Spokesperson on Education, Equality and Community Relations, Victims, Women’s and Children’s Issues. • Sole voice for integrated education on the Assembly Education Committee. • Participated in the Multi-Party Talks, and every other Talks process in the past 15 years. • Public representative in North Down for over ten years. • Member of the Probation Board; has also served on the South Eastern Education and Library Board, the Bangor Citizen’s Advice Bureau board, and the Board of Visitors in the Crumlin Road Prison.

Alliance Working ~ Making the Difference in North Down As a public representative, Stephen Farry has: • Brought over £40m of investment to Bangor, through successfully leading efforts to secure a developer for Queen’s Parade, and to attract Safeway to the town. • As Chair of the Council’s Finance Committee helped to ensure that North Down has had the lowest rate rises in Northern Ireland over the past five years. • Participated in all stages of the peace process since 1996, both as a negotiator and an analyst. • Persuaded the Government to introduce ‘Hate Crime’ laws creating stiffer sentences for racial and sectarian offences. • Authored ground-breaking paper on Community Relations that challenges how we live and learn, work and play together as a society.
