Colorado Judicial Branch opens application period for attorney positions on Judicial Nominating Commissions Thirteen positions in 11 districts to be vacated DENVER – On behalf of Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey, Gov. Bill Ritter and Attorney General John Suthers, the Colorado Judicial Branch announced today it has opened the application period for 13 attorney positions on judicial nominating commissions. The positions, spread among 11 judicial districts, will be vacated when current commissioners’ terms end Dec. 31. Applications are due on or before Oct. 1, 2009. Each judicial district in Colorado has a nominating commission comprising three attorneys and four non-attorneys who select nominees for county and district judgeships. Members of each commission are volunteers and serve six-year terms. Application forms can be found on the Colorado Judicial Branch Web site at http://www.courts.state.co.us/Courts/Supreme_Court/Nominating.cfm and may be mailed to Cheryl Stevens, Judicial Assistant, Colorado Supreme Court, 2 E. 14th Ave., Denver, CO 80203, or faxed to her attention at 303-861-7429. The Judicial Branch will accept applications only from attorneys seeking positions on the nominating commissions. Under the Colorado Constitution, appointments for attorney positions

are made by joint action of the chief justice, governor and attorney general; non-attorney members are appointed by the governor. Article VI, Section 24 of the Constitution requires that no political party can have a majority of greater than one member on any nominating commission, and also requires that at least one commissioner reside in each of the counties of the district. Applicants must reside in the judicial district to which they apply for appointment. Here is a list of upcoming vacancies along with any applicable residency and politicalaffiliation requirements: 3rd Judicial District: One vacancy 4th Judicial District: One vacancy; residents of Teller County are encouraged to apply 6th Judicial District: One vacancy 7th Judicial District: One vacancy; residents of San Miguel County are encouraged to apply 8th Judicial District: Two vacancies 9th Judicial District: One vacancy 14th Judicial District: One vacancy 16th Judicial District: Two vacancies 17th Judicial District: One vacancy 18th Judicial District: One vacancy; residents of Douglas County are encouraged to apply 21st Judicial District: One vacancy Questions about the application process may be directed to Cheryl Stevens at [email protected] or 303-837-3771.
