Sarah's the leader of the peck

Sarah Holden is one happy chick now she has quit her job as a graphic designer and lives on a farm full of her feathered friends. She has even swapped Sarah Holden with one the school run for the of her prized battery chicken run! hens The 32 year old doesn't count her chickens, though, because there are too many. The mother of two's dream when she and her husband bought the Thornton House Farm, Preesall in early 2006 with her husband Richard was to keep hens. Now she has over 1000 hens as well as ducks, geese, pigs, peacocks, peasants, doves, rhea, turkeys, guinea fowl and cats! Back to basics "It's the best thing I've ever done," Sarah said of their move from a 'normal life' in Blackpool, as she describes it, to the countryside. The seven acre farm over Wyre is a stone's throw

from her son and daughter's school and has a beach at the bottom of the garden plus plenty of room for her burgeoning collection of animals. "I live and breathe poultry. I can't help it. I can't imagine life without my hens." Frightened of missing out on the farm, they bought it at auction before they had sold their house in Blackpool. They quickly learned about being self sufficient; it took a "There were no treats for anybody but we grew all our own vegetables and raised pigs for the table.

The ex-battery hens shelter from the rain at Happy Chicks farm

"It has stuck with us and we still grow and eat as much as we can off the farm." Not her prized poultry, though, she quickly points out. Money might have been tight but they got a warm welcome from the neighbours. Knowing she had always wanted hens, one of her neighbours bought her three ex-battery hens from a local farmer. "It was such a kind gesture," said Sarah. "We loved them so we went back a few weeks later and bought another six. "We were back before we knew it for another six, then 18 more and before we knew it we had eggs coming out of our ears." They couldn't possibly eat them all so they decided to open an egg shop appropriately called Happy Chicks with an honesty box at the front of the farm. They bought 280 'point of lay'

commercial laying hens to make it worthwhile. They finished up with a laying flock of over 1000 hens on top of their 'own' pets, the original exbattery hens and several other rare breeds they had adopted. Supreme pets She says chickens are supreme pets and can be just as affectionate as cats and dogs plus they produce 'eggtra' special presents. "They follow me around for cuddles. They are very low maintenance; they need very little time and attention and will amuse themselves around the garden. "You don't need to take them for a walk and they save you so much money on eggs."

She says they understand her, too."They know perfectly well the It's not just Sarah; an increasing number of Sarah and Richard have people in the UK are opting to keep chickens sheep, too, on their as pets. Sarah explains: seven acre farm "There has been a massive growth in 'grow your own' and people want to know where their food has come from and the conditions the animals were kept in." She has started running a 'Keeping Chickens' course to help with the requests from new hen owners. Siuna Reid - a vet at the Veterinary Health Centre Ltd in Lytham - has witnessed the rise in popularity for keeping ex batts in her surgery.

She has 15 clients with rescue hens on her books. Siuna applauds the course. "It is a great idea and very enterprising - to make sure people know how to keep them and look after them." Rehab As well as her laying hens and own ex battery pets, Sarah rescues hens and re-homes them after nursing them through 'rehab' as she calls it, the transition from confinement to a free-range life. On average she plucks about 30 chickens from battery farms a week but Sarah admits it is not always that easy to walk away from the others. This week, for instance, she intended to get 30 but ended up coming home with 220. Not all hens survive, though. "A very small percentage don't make it but if they make it through the first week they can live for another three to five years and they will carry on laying around 250 eggs a year." Some can last longer; one of Sarah's neighbours has a 12 year old chicken. "Once they have been rescued they take about six to ten weeks to start looking beautiful again." If they are still producing eggs why do battery farmers get rid of them? "Commercially, it's not worth keeping them through their first moult. The battery farm has had the best laying year out of them although they still have productive years left in them." In Christmas 2008 she decided to quit her day job and concentrate full-time on her animal farm. "I've done graphic design since I was 18 and my heart wasn't in it any more. Although I was selfemployed and worked from home I needed more

time to spend with the hens. I'm so glad I did." She now spends the day tending - and singing to her animals and running her chicken shop selling poultry products and treatments which Richard built for her. It hasn't been completely idyllic, though. She was devastated when a fox got in a small gap in the wall and killed 20 ducks. "I ran in the house crying saying it wasn't worth it and we had to stop. Then some rhea eggs which had been in the incubator for five weeks hatched and I was ecstatic!" Chicken shop Now she has established a hen haven she wants to open a 'hen hospital' next. "I'd love to open a drop-in centre for sick She also wants to write a warts-and-all book on what it's like to become Sarah and husband Richard with a newly a farmer in your 30s. Sarah hopes to open an hatched chick education centre, too, for children to learn about the life cycle of the egg and chicken and where food comes from. So what does her husband make of her hen obsession? "Richard is really supportive; he does a lot of the work here, too. He told me if I wanted to do it I should go for it. Besides, the chicken shop was his idea." Although Sarah had no previous experience of hens, Richard has poultry in his blood. His family are from Pilling and for generations they have had poultry on their farm. He is a property

developer but he spends much of his time helping out on the farm. Her daughter - who wants to be a vet when she grows up - helps out on the farm and wears her Happy Chicks uniform with pride. Although her son loves living on a farm and helps out, too, he isn't too enthusiastic about his mum's obsession. "I think he's a bit embarrassed his mum 'plays with chickens and sings all day' as he puts it!" laughed Sarah

Evolution has been good to the rooster.

Male chickens can mate with females as often as they like and still hope to spread their genes far and wide. That's because roosters can control how much sperm they expend during a sexual encounter, allowing them to use more or less depending on social and environmental factors. Two important factors are the competition—whether other roosters are mating with the same hen—and whether a rooster has already mated with a particular hen. “Roosters distribute their sperm resources strategically according to several factors, including the reproductive value of the female,” says Tommaso Pizzari of the University of Leeds, the United Kingdom. His team recently discovered this phenomenon while studying a group of free-ranging chickens in Sweden.

Roosters judge a female's reproductive value by the size of her comb. Hens with large combs tend to produce large eggs and lots of them. From an evolutionary perspective, fertilizing these eggs is like hitting the jackpot. The researchers collected the semen of roosters who mated with hens in the presence of other males and alone. The fowl were accustomed to being around humans, and the hens wore harnesses to capture semen. The birds mated over plastic pads that caught any excess semen that dripped out. A rooster's social status influenced his allocation of sperm. When a dominant rooster faces competition from other males, he will expend a lot of sperm and progressively increase the number of sperm. This is like buying more tickets to increase one's chances of winning the lottery.

Hanne Løvlie of Stockholm University collecting data. Image courtesy Tommaso Pizzari.

By contrast, subordinate roosters invest less sperm if several dominant males are mating with the same hen. Realizing they have little chance of success, they save their sperm for another occasion. This makes sense because it takes energy to produce sperm and reserves can be depleted. Farmers have always known that over time roosters grow less interested in mating repeatedly with same hen. By counting semen, the researchers discovered that roosters also reduce the sperm progressively as they continue to mate with the same female. But when a new female is introduced, the rooster wants to copulate and allocates considerably more sperm to his new mate. The physiology of sperm allocation is not yet clear, but the researchers plan to hunt for some of the genes involved. They

will have new tools next spring when the chicken genome sequence is likely to be completed.

When it comes to influencing the content of new chicken genomes, females have a trump card. Hens are not large enough to fight off a sexual advance, but they can squirt semen back on a rooster after copulating, which lasts about a second.

Click to watch the video and contact IHOP headquarters. Sometimes, our attempts at positive dialogue with a company break down and our last resort is a public campaign. While we always prefer to work cooperatively with businesses, on occasion even years of dialogue can yield no benefit for animals and it becomes necessary to publicly call on a company to do the right thing. That’s why today we’re launching a national campaign urging IHOP to start switching some of its eggs away from battery cage confinement to cage-free—a modest step that many of the company’s competitors have already taken. Despite more than two years of private discussions, IHOP refuses to change the fact that all of the eggs it uses come from hens confined in cages so small they can’t even spread their wings. To make this matter even more urgent, yesterday IHOP’s primary egg supplier, Michael Foods, was the subject of a gutwrenching undercover exposé documenting egregious animal cruelty and severe food safety concerns. The animal protection organization that conducted the investigation, Compassion Over Killing, videotaped hens forced to live in cages with the

decomposing corpses of their cage-mates, sick and injured hens, live and dead hens stuck in their cage’s wires, and disturbingly filthy conditions. The cruelties that the investigation exposes are tragically nothing new at Michael Foods. A 2006 HSUS investigation of another Michael Foods factory farm documented similar cruelty, including live hens confined in cages with corpses, hens trapped in cage wires, sick and injured hens, and more. Battery cages are so inhumane they’ve even been banned in IHOP’s home state of California (phase-out date of 2015), thanks to Proposition 2’s landslide passage last November. Please contact IHOP today and ask the company to take a modest, commonsense step in the right direction by simply starting to move away from battery cage eggs. "Crush Video" Investigation Evidence for Federal Law Today, at an HSUS press conference previewing the U.S. Supreme Court’s examination of the federal Depiction of Animal Cruelty Act, I was brought to tears as I watched outtakes of several animal crush videos we obtained during an investigation earlier this year. I don’t think I’ll soon shake the images from my head. Specifically, we released results of a month-long online and email investigation that uncovered the re-emergence of the animal crush video industry, in the wake of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit striking down the federal ban on the interstate sale of videos depicting extreme cruelty. The footage, which I will not post here because it is so deeply troubling, showed the burning of a kitten in a small cage and a rabbit and the stomping of kittens, rabbits, and mice. It was just a small sample of what our investigators obtained. More than a decade ago, and before the Depiction of Animal Cruelty Act was enacted, there were an estimated 2,000 separately produced animal crush videos selling on the Internet, for $15 to $300 each. We recognized immediately that this had nothing to do with the expression of ideas, but it was instead a thriving underground industry built around the most extreme and unimaginable acts of cruelty. We worked hard in the Congress to pass legislation to attack the problem, and helped to enact a federal law in December 1999.

Because the videos typically do not show anyone’s face and do not reveal the names of the people who produce them, the perpetrators of these abhorrent acts were generally able to evade prosecution. The law was enacted to eliminate the financial incentive driving production of the videos. With the new law in place, the industry withered, and all but vanished in the period of a couple of years, based on our monitoring efforts. The people who committed such vile acts apparently retreated into whatever darkened dens they live in. Dogfighters continued to peddle their videos, however, and there were several successful prosecutions under the federal law, including that of dogfighting impresario Robert Stevens, who was convicted in 2005 of violating this law. He challenged the constitutionality of the law before the Third Circuit, and that court overturned his conviction and struck down the entire law in July 2008. In December, the U.S. Solicitor General filed a cert petition requesting review of the Third Circuit’s decision. On April 20, the Supreme Court agreed to review that decision, and oral arguments are to be heard on Oct. 6—the first animal protection case before the nation’s highest court in 15 years. With the Third Circuit's ill-considered ruling, the noxious crush video industry has revived and crawled back into view since last July, with crippling results for animals. The crushing videos uncovered proved to be readily available for purchase, and it’s all documented in a 28-page report we released today. The password-protected part of one website had a total of 118 videos for sale of small animals, including rabbits, hamsters, tortoises, quail, chicken, ducks, frogs, snakes, and even cats,

being tortured (including being burned, drowned and having nails hammered into them) and crushed. Videos ranged in price from $20 to $100. Undercover investigators also established contact with another crush website and were offered for sale 12 crush videos featuring rabbits at an average price of $50. This is not speech. This is commercial activity of a sickening and barbaric type, and the peddlers of this smut should find no safe harbor for it in the First Amendment. The courts have recognized that “certain well defined and narrowly limited classes of speech” play “no essential part of any exposition of ideas, and are of such slight social value as a step to truth” that they may be regulated based on their content consistent with the First Amendment. These classes of speech include fighting words, speech that incites imminent criminal activity, obscenity, offers/solicitation to engage in illegal activity, and child pornography. Video depictions of cruelty should be added to this limited set of activities that are not protected. We are pleased that the Solicitor Generals for both the Bush and Obama Administrations have pushed this case forward. And we are heartened that 26 state Attorneys General have filed a friend of the court brief urging the Supreme Court to reverse the Third Circuit’s ruling, with not a single Attorney General taking the opposite stance. But it’s going to be a tough case, and groups ranging from the ACLU to the NRA and the Safari Club International have weighed in on the opposite side. Their attacks against this anti-cruelty law are ill-advised and

unsound, and their work gives great comfort to animal-abuse industries that deserve only unflinching condemnation.
