Coeur d’A ’Alene offers a wide range of in-

door and out utdoor act ctivities for individuals, families and nd groups alike. Within Kootenai County there are 87 pa parks and campgrounds, 47 hiking trails, fishin ing, swimming, golfing, horseback riding, soft ftball, tennis, amusement parks, and, of course, e, spectacular scenery at every turn. It is a thrivi ving resort community on the shores of Lake Coe Coeur d’Alene in northern Idaho. Its defining image is sunny days, clear ar blue waters, pine-studded vistas and ope pen spaces. Coeur d’Alene has become known as a the playground of the Pacific Northwest for fo luxury accommodations and a wealth of reccreation and attractions in a stunning natura ral setting.

French traders s named their trading post in respect for the tough trading practices of local Indian tribes. Translated literally, it means “Heart of the Awl” or “sharp-hearted.” Coeur d’Alene is easy to reach, located off Interstate 90 only 40 miles away from the Spokane International Airport, served by 65 non-stop daily flights from cities including Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Portland, Seattle, Boise, Oakland, Salt Lake City and others. The Coeur d’Alene Airport provides charter and private air service, with the capacity to land 34-seat passenger planes. There are vans, taxis, rental cars and shuttles available from both airports.

COEUR D’ALENE TRIVIA • Coeurr d’Alene is the home of the world’s only floating green, located at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course. The floating green on the 14th hole measures 15,000 square feet and weighs nearly five million pounds. It can be towed to change the distance to the hole from 75 yards to 175 and greater. • According to the New York Times, John Finney of Coeur d’Alene made and used the world’s first pair of water skis on Lake Coeur d’Alene in the 1920s.

• Lake Coeur d’Alene is 25 miles long with more than 135 miles of shoreline. The lake is an average of 120 feet deep.

• Coeur d’Alene has the world’s longest floating boardwalk, located at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. It was built in 1986 and required 1,600 float logs (each 32 feet long), 28,000 pounds of spikes, and 8,000 pounds of bolts to complete. The boardwalk is anchored by 150 tons of concrete along with strategically placed pilings. • Silver Mountain Resort, located 30 miles east of Coeur d’Alene, is home to the world’s longest single-stage gondola. • More than a million lights and holiday displays stretch along the water near The Coeur d’Alene Resort for the Fantasy in Lights event held during the holiday season. • Coeur d’Alene has been recognized as “Tree City USA” since 1985, an honor bestowed by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
