For IV meds, compatibility with IV drips and/or solutions n/a Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions .contraindicated in continued smoking. Use cautiously in cardiovascular disease including hypertension. Hyperthyroidism. Effects of acetaminophen, furosemide, and caffeine may be increased during smoking cessation because of decreased metabolism. Common side effects Burning at patch site, erythema, pruritis

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) Acetaminophen and furosemide may need to be increased during smoking cessation because of decreased metabolism.

Lab value alterations caused by medicine None known

Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Encourage the patient to participate in a smoking cessation program. Apply patch at same time each day to clean, dry skin. Wash hands with plain water after administration as soap increases absorption. Do not trim or cut patch. Dispose of used patch by folding adhesive sides together and replace in foil pouch.
