“Iran is really beautiful” Elisa Scholte [email protected]

Elisa Scholte lives in Isfahan, Iran’s second largest city, with her Iranian partner and two children. Elisa Scholte graduated in Educational Sciences at the University of Groningen. For her thesis, she studied the developments and changes in Iran's educational system since the countries revolution in 1979. After her graduation she stayed in Iran, and works in tourism and writes columns about living in Iran now and then. Opinion about Iran You’ve lived in Iran for the last 2.5 years. How did people react when you told them you’d be moving to the country? “Many people were a bit apprehensive at first. But I’ve started writing a monthly, column-like newsletter for family, friends and professors for which I get very positive reactions. People who visit us here are really, really positive. The image of Iran in the Western media is hugely distorted. It’s a really beautiful country with a very rich cultural heritage and the Iranian people are very open and hospitable. If, for example, you go for a stroll in a park here, it’s not unusual to be invited by several families to join their picnics.”

Semirom, Small city in Isfahan province, Iran

The United States have threatened Iran on many occasions. Aren’t you afraid of war? “No. I don’t think it will come to war between the United States and Iran. However, we have of course discussed the matter. Should it ever come to war – which, again, I don’t believe – our priority would be the safety of our children, so we would, for the time being, return to the Netherlands.”

Iranian View: Don’t hurt your skin! The sun season started in Iran. Unlike Holland, the sun gets often less appreciation, but this beautiful season, however, attracts people en masse back to the mountains or -closer to home- to the blossums on the banks of the rivers. I had noticed before that skin is important in Iran. Unlike the Dutch attitude (as far as I know) on a nice healthy tan after a day in the sun, direct sunlight on the skin is shunned in Iran as much as possible. Some girls wear during their day in the mountains a cap with a huge sun visor and even hands are sometimes protected against the sun with thin white hand gloves. A light coloring brings often unsolicited ‘advice’ from all angles; the girl in the bookstore asks why the skin of the children is so burned (indicating their nice smooth brown skin with a slight blush) and the pharmacist, one sister-in-law, another sister-in-law, a cousin, the neighbor, a cousin of the neighbor and my own dear all have a whitener-creme for me, in addition to those specifically against other creme freckles! I fear that I should go buy a sun cap, if only to see reduce the comments! In Iran a light color in any event is by far the most desirable, so strong that I sometimes see make up get women even a spooky attraction. Once a bride persuaded me to join when going to the local barberto get ready for her marriage. But one look in the mirror was enough to avoid all cameras that evening, I was shocked to death!

Introducing one Iranian city: Qazvin Qazvin (historically also rendered as Kazvin, Kasvin, Casbeen, and Casbin in the West) is the largest city and capital of the Province of Qazvin in Iran, about 150 km northwest of Tehran. It is at an altitude of about 2000 meters above sea level, and is a city with a cold but dry climate being south of the rugged Alborz range. The city is thought to have been founded by Shapur II, King of Persia in 250 CE, under the name Shad Shahpur, when he built a fortification there to control regional tensions.

Peighambariyeh (Four Jewish Prophets Shrine) Qazvin has sometimes been of central importance at important moments of Iranian history. Captured by invading Arabs (644 AD) and destroyed by Genghis Khan (13th century), Shah Tahmaseb I made, for a time, Qazvin the capital of the Safavid empire around 1600 AD. Qazvin was bombed and occupied by Russian forces in both World Wars.

Constructed in 1067 CE, these were the first monuments in Islamic architecture to include a nonconic two-layered dome. Unfortunately, both towers were severely damaged by a devastating earthquake in March 2003. Castle of Alamut founded in 1088 is one of other interesting places in Qazvin. After Islam, the popularity of mystics (tasawwuf), as well as the prominence of tradition (Hadith), religious jurisprudence (fiqh), and philosophy in Qazvin, led to the emergence of many mosques and religious schools, some of them are Jame' Atiq Mosque of Qazvin, one of the oldest mosques in Iran (the oldest part of the mosque is said to have been constructed by the orders of Harun al-Rashid in 807CE), Heydarieh mosque, Masjed Al-nabi (Soltani Mosque) With an area of 14000 m2, one of the most glorious mosques of antiquity and built in the Safavieh's monarchy era, Sanjideh Mosque, a former fire temple dating back to pre-Islamic Iran and its present day form is attributed to the Seljukian era, Peighambarieh School-Mosque, founded 1644 according to inscription and Hosseiniyeh Aminiha.

Custom Confection of Qazvin (Baghlava)

Chehelsoton (inside) Museum Qazvin has many monument; some of them are buildings from the Safavid era, when it was capital of Persia. Perhaps the most famous of the surviving edifices is the Chehelsotoon (Kolah Farangi) mansion, today a museum in central Qazvin. Other attractions near Qazvin are the tombs of two Saljuki era princes, Aboo Saeed Bijar, son of Sad, and Aboo Mansoor Iltai, son of Takin — located in two separate towers known as the Kharaghan twin towers.

There have been an abundance of scientists and mystics who lived in Qazvin, or came from Qazvin, whose tombs are scattered throughout the cities and villages of the province. Some of these are Hamdollah Mostowfi, the great historian and writer (1281-1349) and author of The Selected History (Tarikh Gozideh), Obeid e Zakani, famous 14th-century poet noted for his satire and obscene verses, Mir Emade Ghazvini (Emadol Ketabe Ghazvini), great master of Nastaligh Calligraphy, Mehdi Shabi, the great contemporary painter, Ali Akbar Dehkhoda, prominent linguist and author of Iran's first modern Persian dictionary, Ashrafudin Hosseini Gilani (Nasim Shomal), the famous iranian poet and and Abolqassem Aref Qazvini an Iranian poet, lyricist, and musician.
