I'm sure every teacher has had an inspirational moment in their time as a teacher. The Media Team asked if we could record two teacher's inspirational moments. The result: Rob Clarke was teaching some boys how to play canoe polo, and one of the boys wasn't physically able. He was the first to roll and after that moment you could see his confidence going through the roof. Some of the other boys were really struggling with their own kayak roll. But this kid, his face was like 'wow, I can do this', while all the other guys were struggling. 'It's just great to see them have a go,' Clark says. 2nd Breakout: Learning to Use Laptops. This breakout was demonstrating how to use laptops for different things. One of the tools that she was talking about is a tool that allows you to see another user's screen. This is called A.R.D, which stands for 'Apple Remote Desktop'.
Thursday’s Keynote He is a 34 year old who holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and law and arts degrees from Auckland University. He is known for implementing humor into his keynotes and has published several critically acclaimed books, did you guess, it's Steve Carden. His attendance at Ulearn '08 is welcomed by many teachers as he received a strong attendance at his keynote, about the changing nature of business in a rapidly globalising world impacting New Zealand's future workforce, so eagerly Daniel and William set out to find out some of the opinions from the teachers who had been observing. One man said that he found the keynote so motivating and invigorating that within 5 minutes he decided to put his laptop lid down and listen to what Steve had to say. This shows that even Youtube can't match the words of Steve Carden. Many commented on his smart humor but also his mature way of expressing it. Some of the people we interviewed feel like they're opinion was reinforced and they can now push harder to upskill their students and prepare them for their career/job in the future workforce. So from this we can conclude that Steve Carden is an effective communicator delivering his message in a clever and humorous way.

Letʼs obtain a personal insight on how it feels to give a presentation for the first time at Ulearn08, with breakout presenter Kirstin Anderson McGhie. After breakout 2b, when Kirstin gave her presentation, she kindly paid a visit to our Media Team Home Base for an interview on how it felt giving a presentation at Ulearn for the first time. The presentation itself was about voicethread and how it could be used as a tool for reaching a global audience and promoting collaborative learning. Kirstin mentioned she enjoyed giving the presentation, although her nerves really got to her in the beginning. After a few minutes of the presentation, a few friendly smiles and nods started to appear from the audience which made Kirstin more relaxed and allowed her to carry on her presentation with full confidence. In the end, the presentation was a success, and went smoothly. Overall Kirstin was pleased with her performance and said the only improvement that could be made next time was the pace of her delivery.

Behind the Scenes - Media Team This section is an inside view of what goes on in a day for the Ulearn08 media team. For the past two days we have been furiously working away towards difficult deadlines to produce a newsletter about what goes on during the day. Each pair is assigned different tasks to follow. Once the task is completed they are then to be handed into an adult to be printed, ready to hand out. Here are a few of the stages which we follow to complete the newsletter: Stage 1: We set out in pairs to explore the exhibitions, and take some photos. Stage 2: Then we rushed back to home base, and started uploading the gathered graphics onto the computers. This was repeated several times a day. Stage 3: After we had gathered and sorted, all the graphics into separate folders, we got straight to the difficult part, writing the article. Stage 4: After spending furious hours writing out our articles, we then proof read it before handing it in using Google Docs. Stage 5: Then our work was taken in for final touch ups and then put into a newsletter layout Stage 6: After lots of hard work and rushing around, our newsletter was printed and sent out just a few minutes before the deadline. As you can see media work is not easy, and can be quite stressful towards the end of the day. Although it does have its fun moments, and the final product is always a pleasing sight to see, Our main purpose is to keep you informed of events, highlights and extra information that may be of interest to you. We take pride in what we do, and give our best to get our job done by the end of the day.
Twitter- the Good, the Bad, and the Off-topic. The media team have been monitoring the event's Twitter feed, watching throughout today for insightful, amusing or odd comments. Some of the things spoken have been pulled off the site to be revealed here, bringing to question just how honest we should be when working on a public comment stream. From people asking to do group Mexican waves to people giving heartfelt (but subtly conflicting at times) notes on the way the education system needs to change. However, despite all the questionable musings of the Twitter channel, there are still some more poignant things to be said, such as one user's note that “That is the heart of the change. It’s not the kids who must change, they already have, it’s us.” So will people watch what they say on Twitter after this public revelation that people are watching you talk? Chances are most of you will remain unchanged, but only the channel will prove this. http://twitter.com Search for #ulearn08 at http://search.twitter.com to see the buzz!

Breaking Open the Breakouts Two members of the media team attended the breakout session 'Showcase of the Future: The New, the Wild, and the Wacky', to better understand the sessions the delegates had been attending over the last two days. The breakout centered around several new technologies and systems, displayed by six eager presenters, glad to show their wares and ideas. The presentation opened on Jan Zawadzki showing the capabilities of Google Apps and its contents, followed soon after by Rob Clarke informing the audience of Fendalton school's Tech Wizard program. The third presenter was Roger Thomas, displaying the technical features of MacOS10. After his informative talk, Rob Clarke returned and told us all about Fendalton's digital safety policy. A maths teacher from Christ's College was then shown on the screen giving a Podcast on SmartCasts, a type of podcast utilizing the features of a SmartBoard, before Karen Hall, an Australian teacher, gave us a look into a website called 'superclubsplus', which allowed primary school children and their teachers to communicate and learn to use the internet's many forums and profile sites safely and securely. Finally, Dean Rogers showed us how to create an e-portfolio using iWeb, a feature on Apple computers. This entire session was well-organized, and each speaker competent in their material. Well done to the presenters for putting on such a concise, organized and informative display.

A typical class has a teacher at one school and up to 12 students spread over a wide geographic area (and several other schools) all participating in lessons and activities throughout the school week. The goal is a rich and participatory learning experience for students with debates, experiments and group work much the same as in any other kiwi classroom. The subject choice and variety is extensive and is certainly not limited to theory based offerings – equine studies, aviation, senior physical education and music are all weekly occurrences alongside the likes of chemistry, accounting, geography and German.

Conference evaluation
ULearnʼs very first Unconference will take place on Friday 10 October during breakouts 6-7. An Unconference is a conference where the content of the sessions is created and managed by the participants during the course of the event. It is a BYO session in which delegates can introduce a topic, discuss an opinion, or share a viewpoint about a subject. And, finally, the Law of Two Feet is a guide to people attending an Unconference: "If you are not learning or contributing, it is your responsibility to respectfully find another place to be." So come to the unbelievable Unconference!
Go to the Ulearn website to fill in the online survey. It will only take a few minutes of your time. http://www.ulearn.org.nz
Ulearn 09 Come to Ulearn 09 in Auckland from the 7th to the 9th of October THANK YOU to all the presenters at this conference and all the students who were involved in the conference.
