The Broken Bridge Brigade office has moved. Please note the new address above. Please be patient while our office gets organized. The move has caused a delay in submissions and correspondence. As we receive feedback we give much thought to your suggestions and ideas. Therefore, we will be adding a few new features. We always welcome any ideas you may have. Challenging the Arkansas 70% Law

Legal Analyst (L.A) It is the duty of the Legal Analyst to track and document legal notices, cases, legislative changes, proposals, and legal articles for the Broken Bridge Brigade.

For those affected by the Arkansas 70% law, we need your help too. I have written a letter to Senator Luker regarding amending this Act. We need a few individuals from Arkansas prisons to assist us in researching the effects this law has had on tax payers, inmates, families of inmates, the ADC budget, overcrowding issues, etc. The following information is needed in order to see this law amended:

Unit Coordinator (U.C) It is the duty of the Unit Coordinator to assist with distribution, contacting the prison library, subscriptions and providing information to other inmates about the newsletter at your unit, and provide the BBB with news and birthday announcements Re-Entry Assistant (R-E.A) It is the duty of the Re-Entry Assistant to research potential employers, housing units and other assistance that will be needed for inmates who will be re-entering society. This will help give these inmates and their families resources needed for the transition of re-entry and starting over. By providing potential employers and where to go for other assistance we can help ensure that these inmates have a positive transition. I can assist you with an example general letter to send to businesses and housing units. We need to know what businesses would consider hiring recently released individuals who can provide 2-3 references from supervisors reflecting their good work ethic, maturity and responsibility. Also seeking Entertainment Writer/ Columnist, Book Review, humor, drama, comedy and comics artist. Original artwork can be returned to you at your request. If more than 500 words article may be split between issues (unless we have the room in one issue). Just keep it somewhat clean, we will clean it up if its too risky. This is a call for great minds and creative thinking Broken Bridge Brigade Research and Development Team Justice 4 Inmates Attn: Editor P.O Box 414 Wyalusing, PA 18853

And any other relevant information that could help with possibly amending the 70% law.

Our hope is to gain enough resources, research and support to get the attention from legislatures and change this law for all those who have been affected by it. Excessive sentencing is not the answer. Below is the letter which was sent to Senator Luker. Please take a moment to write a similar letter to Mr. Luker asking for his assistance. You may use the following letter or write one of your own, The mailing address sn included in the letter.

News and Updates Challenging the 70% law cont... Feel free to use this letter or you can have your loved one email me at: [email protected] Arkansas Senator Jim Luker P.O. Box 216 Wynne, AR 72396 Dear Senator Luker: On behalf of the families and loved ones of inmates serving prison sentences in the state of Arkansas, I write to you requesting your assistance with a few issues facing our prison system. I have contacted several state representatives regarding this matter with little or no response. I am hoping you may be able to assist us with regards to the 70% law. I have been working with others who have been affected by this law and we have formed some ideas on how this law could be amended. The object of this proposed amendment could potentially reduce the prison population, the annual cost to support inmates and it could also reduce the recidivism rate with certain offenders. The ultimate cost of excessive sentencing laws affects many others besides the offender. The invisible victims of these laws such as the taxpayers and family members of inmates, may not be behind bars but certainly pay the price. I know that you have taken bills to the senate regarding prison and sentencing issues which is why I would like to offer these ideas to you. In 2003 Larry Norris, Director of the Arkansas Dept. of Corrections, had suggested some ideas to the Legislature that, from I can tell, went ignored. His ideas are some of the best ideas I have seen that would combat the impact the 70 percent law has caused. I would like to re-introduce his ideas along with a few others. I would appreciate you taking the time to review these and determine if such changes could be presented at the next session, I realize the next session may not be until 2009. I wanted to bring these to your attention early so we may have time to discuss them and alter them as needed to help see that they go to the next session. Thank for you reviewing the following ideas:

1. 70% reduced to 50% with meritorious good time 2. 1st time drug offenders must serve 1/3 of time sentenced 2nd time drug offenders must serve ½ of time sentenced 3rd time drug offenders must serve 70% of time sentenced 3. These changes retroactive to all inmates sentenced under 70% (not just the ones sentenced AFTER 2005) OR retroactive to meth offenders sentenced prior to and after 2005 Please let me know your thoughts on this. I look forward to your reply Sincerely, Concerned Citizens

Update to article from last issue entitled: Life In Prison For Smoking Pot At the age of 17, Tyrone Brown was arrested for a two dollar stick up, the victim was unharmed. For this Mr. Brown received 10 years probation. While Mr. Brown was on probation he was caught smoking pot, the sentence was then reversed to life in prison. Judge Keith Dean, said at the sentencing, “Good Luck Mr. Brown”. Tyrone has now served 16 years in prison and was recently featured on 20/20 and on the Dallas Morning News. D.A Bill Hill has asked Gov Rick Perry to release Mr. Brown. A decision will be made soon. A website has also been set up: http://www.savemrbrown.com/ Since this article Tyone Brown was granted a Conditional Pardon from Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. Timeline: JAN 19, 2007 - The Board of Appeals voted to release Tyrone Brown. The Appeal moves to Gov. Rick Perry.

March 09, 2007 - Governor Perry signs conditional pardon to free Tyrone Brown. March 16, 2007 - TYRONE COMES HOME!!! Because of all the dedicated people who started this campaign for Tyrone and who showed support, wrote letters, made phone calls and etc., Tyrone Brown is finally home! Many Thank Yous!!!

The Lighter Side Of Life

Update on West Memphis 3 Case According to Damiens' attorney, the long awaited dna results are in, which he says are “significant”. For Damien, Jason, and Jessie, this day must be long, long overdue. Damien currently resides on death row, while Jason and Jessie are serving life for their supposed role in 3 brutal murders in 1993. This case has gained international attention, and the 3 convicted have gained support from thousands of people including celebrities that have come to know them over the years. Benefit concerts, fundraisers, Damiens book, “Almost Home” and websites such as; www.wm3.org and several myspace.com pages have helped spread the word about this case and the people involved. It is all of our hope that this new evidence will help bring light to this case and give the WM3 a chance to have a new trial, and in the end gain freedom.

Dedicated to bringing you a laugh, a smile or at least a devilish grin

A man and his wife are dining at a table in a plush restaurant, and the husband keeps staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sits alone at a nearby table.

What's the difference between a girlfriend and wife? 45 lbs What's the difference between a boyfriend and husband? 45 minutes

The wife asks, 'Do you know her?'

Why do men want to marry virgins? They can't stand criticism.

'Yes,' sighs the husband, 'She's my ex-girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up seven years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.'

Why is it so hard for women to find men that are sensitive, caring, and good-looking? Because those men already have boyfriends.

'My God!' says the wife, 'Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A business man got on an elevator. When he entered, there was a blonde already inside who greeted him with a bright, “T-G-I-F.” He smiled at her and replied, “S-H-I-T.” She looked puzzled, and repeated, “T-G-I-F,” more slowly. He again answered, “S-H-I-T.” The blonde was trying to keep it friendly, so, she smiled her biggest smile and said as sweetly as possibly, “T-G-I-F.” The man smiled back to her and once again, “S-H-I-T.” The exasperated blonde finally decided to explain, “'T-G-I-F' means 'Thank Goodness It's Friday.' Get it duuhhh?” The man answered, “'S-H-I-T' means ”Sorry, Honey, It's Thursday.“ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A man wakes up one morning to find a bear on his roof. So he looks in the yellow pages and sure enough, there's an ad for ”Bear Removers.“ He calls the number, and the bear remover says he'll be over in 30 minutes. The bear remover arrives, and gets out of his van. He's got a ladder, a baseball bat, a shotgun and a mean old pit bull. ”What are you going to do, the homeowner asks?“ ”I'm going to put this ladder up against the roof, then I'm going to go up there and knock the bear off the roof with this baseball bat. When the bear falls off, the pit bull is trained to grab his testicles and not let go. The bear will then be subdued enough for me to put him in the cage in the back of the van.“ He hands the shotgun to the homeowner. ”What's the shotgun for?“ ask the homeowner. ”If the bear knocks me off the roof, shoot the dog. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Why don't bunnies make noise when they have sex? Because they have cotton balls. What's the difference between a porcupine a BMW?A porcupine has the pricks on the outside !

What's the difference between a new husband and a new dog? After a year, the dog is still excited to see you

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What makes men chase women they have no intention of marrying? The same urge that makes dogs chase cars they have no intention of driving.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What did the blonde say when she found out she was pregnant? “Are you sure it's mine?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Why does Mike Tyson cry during sex?Mace will do that to you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Why did OJ Simpson want to move to West Virginia ? Everyone has the same DNA.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Why do men find it difficult to make eye contact? Breasts don't have eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Did you hear about the dyslexic Rabbi?He walks around saying “Yo.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Where does an Irish family go on vacation?A different bar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Did you hear about the Chinese couple that had a retarded baby? They named him Sum Ting Wong What's the difference between a southern zoo and a northern zoo? A southern zoo has a description of the animal on the front of the cage along with... ”a recipe“. How do you get a sweet little80-year-old lady to say the F word? Get another sweet little 80-year-old lady to yell *BINGO*! What's the difference between a northern fairytale and a souther fairytale?A northern fairytale begins ”Once upon a time...“ A southern fairytale begins ”Y'all ain't gonna believe this shit

A Worthy Mention NEVER BEFORE TOLD STORY Prison guards and inmates alike will be moved by the inspiring story “Still Holding My Own”, written by author and motivational speaker, Tim Hampton, a former Prison Guard for both the Texas and Florida Prison System. Hear Tim's inspirational story of hope, courage, and determination. AUTHORS MISSION Placed in foster care at an early age....Shuffled between friends, family, strangers....Constantly moving every two years since birth. A young Tim Hampton lived a painful childhood. Tim yearned for a loving and stable home. Finally, Tim was reunited with his biological mother at the age of 13, only to lose her to a tragic and horrific death two years later. No child should have to endure the pain and suffering Tim experienced as a young child. Yet despite the adversity he lived, he was still able to complete high school in 1992 and enter college soon thereafter. In 1995, Tim gained employment with the Texas Prison system. It was there where he learned about life from a totally different perspective. Tim also obtained a part-time job as an Adult Crisis/Suicide intervention counselor. In 2003, having counseled thousands of individuals with a multitude of problems, Tim decided to relocate to Florida in hopes of creating a better life for himself. Since an early age, Tim yearned to positively impact the lives of those whose path he crossed. Today, Tim Hampton, 32, and a single father of two, has traveled to cities such as Boston, Manhattan, Tulsa, Seattle, and Atlanta speaking to individuals both young and old. He speaks about his storied childhood and offers ways to overcome even the most bleak situations to get the most out of life. With the help of caring individuals and organizations, Tim Hampton hopes to take his message of inspiration to as many U.S. cities as possible. Topics Tim is available Prison Society to speak at... 'Still Holding My Own' details incidents from riots to sex scandals that occur behind prison walls. ORDER THE BOOK AtlasBooks.com 30 Amberwood Pkwy. Chapter Twenty-Four The Oppression & Resistance Continue By R25288 ( c ) 2006-2007 www.r25288.com “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.” George Orwell, 1984 I read it, as it was inadvertently posted for one day on the prison notice board, locked up behind glass. It is there in the archives, on the computers, in the system, in the deleted files, or saved files. I was so astounded that I did not copy it immediately, and when I went back to copy it, it had been removed. It basically was from the Florida Department of Corrections headquarters in Tallahassee, addressed to all the Wardens, and VIP’s. It basically said that the worst thing that could happen is to let inmates win grievances. That, my dear gentle reader, is an example of systemic violence. It is this type of thinking that cost two homeless men their lives recently in my county. It is this type of thinking that cost a gay man his life this month in a nearby county. It is this type of thinking that cost a young 14 year old African American his life last year in our state correctional system. It is this type of thinking that allowed many guards to enter Frank Valdez’s cell in this state and stomp him to death. Frank’s widow received about $800,000.00 for that thinking. The young lad above has earned his family $2,000,000.00 to date, and our new Governor, Charlie Crist, is attempting to get them another $5,000,000.00. I am sure they would prefer his company to all that money. Virginia, that is systemic violence. Speaking of Charlie, he wants to give me my right to vote back. Virginia, you know that I rarely vote for Republicans, but I would vote for Charlie, if he gives me back my right to vote, which I currently have lost for live. That is systemic violence. My love has transferred to a new prison at his request. It is one of our faith based prisons. Did you hear me, Virginia? Faith based! Faith! Religious freedom? 1st Amendment? Ha! In my time in prison, I never wore a cross. It was not from my lack of attempt to get one. A pastor’s wife sent me one. DOC sent it back. It did not come from an approved source. My brother ordered me one, and the supplier refused to deliver to prisons. Go figure. The rules state you may wear a cross if it is sent from a jeweler, or approved source. It may not cost over $50.00. Forms must be filed. Approval must be made. Nothing in prison comes easy, except abuse. I ordered my boy a cross and chain at Christmas, from HSN(Home Shopping Network). It was sent back. I ordered another. It was sent back. I called the prison chaplain. He informed me that the cross had been sent by UPS(United Parcel Service). The horror!! That is not an approved method of shipment. Who knew? Only US mail is allowed. It is nice to be a monopoly.

So the chaplain suggested that I may wish to order from Sidney Charles Direct Regulation Religious Medallion Catalog. J.D. picked out from page 5, the PC108, Disk, with a cross in it, gold colored, about the size of a half dollar, with a 24?, #1 Figaro Chain, from page 14, at a total cost of $24.00, plus shipping, which was, of course, by US mail. He filed the proper forms, and received approval. He received it, and was allowed to wear it. It gave him joy.
