NEWS AHMEDABAD: It was in June last year that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had thrown open the multi-level mechanized parking facility at Kankaria. But with the lack of political will for disallowing free parking around the Knakaria Lake, the mechanized parking suffers and falls short of maintaining a favourable occupancy rate. The AMC has spent Rs 37 crore in constructing the facility and struggles to maintain 25 per cent to 40 per cent occupancy on weekdays days and holidays. Most of the parking takes place at football ground, near Kids City gate at Kankaria and along the Kankaria outer radial road during peak hours. Last year the AMC had proposed that it would construct 12 more mechanized parking facilities in the city. "If the police fails to reinforce on-street parking ban around Kankaria then the concept of the mechanized facility will fail as a whole," says a senior AMC official. "The police commissioner's notification banning parking within a specific radius around the Kankaria multi-storied parking facility has been in place for the past nine months now but it is not being enforced. This will prove detrimental for the facility," adds the AMC official. The system has seven levels which can easily allow parking of 250 cars. Each level is 1,600 to 2,200 mm high and will accommodate cars approximately 5,000 to 5,500 mm in length, 2,200 mm width and weighing approximately 2,500 to 2,700 kg. In this facility, the cars have to park first on a platform at the entrance and then the system takes over and does the rest. The platform lifts the car and accommodates it in an appropriate slot. Once done, the attendant hands you your car keys and you can leave for Kankaria amusement park.
Advantages of Automated Parking Facilities * There is a greater sense of security due to the fact that patrons do not actually walk to and from their own space. * It is highly feasible for extremely small sites that are unable to accommodate a conventional ramped parking structure. * There is high parking efficiency (i.e. sf/space and cf/space). * There is no need for driving while looking for an available space. * Emissions are greatly brought down and reduced. * The patrons wait for their car in a highly controlled environment. * There are less chances for vehicle vandalism. * There is a minimal staff requirement if it is used by known parkers.
* It is possible that the retrieval time is lower than the combined driving/parking/walking time in conventional ramped parking structures. * There is an easier facade integration since there are no ramping floors or openings in exterior walls.
Potential Disadvantages of Automated Parking Facilities * There is a greater construction cost per space (but this may be offset by the chance for lesser land costs per space and the system manufacturers say that the operating and maintenance cost will be lower as compared to a conventional ramped parking structure). * Use of redundant systems will result in a greater cost. * It may be a bit confusing for unfamiliar users. * It is not recommended for high peak hour volume facilities. * There may be a fear of breakdown (How do I get my car out?). * There is an uncertain building department review and approval process. * It requires a maintenance contract with the supplier. https://medium.com/@jeremymartin071/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-automated-parkingsystem-d725492fd67f http://klcarpark.com/about.htm https://www.nbmcw.com/car-parking/24450-multilevel-car-parking-systems.html
Multi-Level Car Parking A multi-level car parking system is meant to maximize car parking capacity by utilizing vertical rather than horizontal space. However, with land in the metros and ‘A’ grade cities becoming scarcer and dearer and plots getting smaller, conventional parking is proving non-feasible. It is often found that ramps or car lifts consume so much parking area that no increase in parking capacity is possible. In such cases, mechanized car parking systems make creation of extra parking capacity feasible. The Equivalent Car Space (ECS) that can be accommodated at a parking site would vary with the technology used. Types of multilevel parking currently available are:
Conventional Multi-Level Parking
Conventional multilevel parking system can be underground, above ground or both under and above ground. The open parking structure is preferable to enclosed structures for above ground parking, as it does not require mechanical ventilation and specialized fire protection systems.
Automated Multi-Level Parking As against cars being driven on ramps or carried in car lifts to different levels in conventional
Multilevel parking, cars are driven at only one level for parking or retrieval. Cars are parked in steel pallets – a target pallet rides up or down to the driveway level at the press of a button for parking or retrieval. Technologies used for automated parking systems are of the following types: Puzzle Type or Modular Elevated Type or Tower Multi-Level Floor Parking Multi-Level Circulation Automated Parking System Rotary type D (Stacker) System Automatic multi-storey car parks involve lower building cost per parking slot, as they typically require less building volume and ground area than a conventional facility with the same capacity. However, the cost of the mechanical equipment that is needed within the building to transport cars internally needs to be added to the lower building cost to determine the total costs. Other costs are usually lower too; for example, there is no need for an energy-intensive ventilating system, since cars are not driven inside and human cashiers or security personnel may not be needed. Automated car parks rely on technology similar to that used for mechanical handling and document retrieval. The driver leaves the car in an entrance module, and it is then transported to a parking slot by a robot trolley. For the driver, the process of parking is reduced to leaving the car inside an entrance module. At peak periods, a wait may be involved before entering or leaving because loading passengers and luggage occurs at the entrance and exit location rather than at the parked stall. This loading blocks the entrance or exit from being available to others. Whether the retrieval of vehicles is faster in an automatic car park or a self-park car park depends on the layout and number of exits. You can count some of the multilevel car parking initiatives in India which are developed by Municipal Corporation & Development authority of cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad & Ahmedabad. https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-possible-solutions-of-parking-problems-in-India https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automated_parking_system http://projectcitizengrp1.blogspot.in/2010/06/advantages-nd-disadvantages-of-parking.html
