Press Release April 8, 2009 - For Immediate Publication Hyderabad, India - National Election Watch Andhra Pradesh would like to inform the voters of Andhra Pradesh about criminal charges against some contestants of Phase 1 of the Lok Sabha Elections. The presence of tainted candidates casts a gloomy shadow on the expectations of people awaiting good governance. The scenario in the gloomy days of recession is made further gloomier by the dark antecedents of the contestants. 315 candidates are contesting in the first phase of parliament elections for 22 constituencies. National Election Watch Andhra Pradesh team has done a thorough analysis of the data after carefully scrutinizing all the affidavits filed by the candidates along with their nomination papers. Some highlights of the findings are:  Out of 315 contestants 34 have pending criminal charges against them, many of them very serious.  Candidates with generous means have given transparency a complete go by by not disclosing their income tax PAN in the affidavits.  Careful analysis of the affidavits has revealed that a large number of candidates have not given valuations of their assets (like vehicles, gold, land, buildings etc). This is in complete violation of the judgement of the Supreme Court of 2003. This disheartens us very much and we urge the Election Commission to take immediate steps to correct this degradation and ensure that the information filed in affidavits is accurate and does not become a mere formality without any penalty for non-adherence.  The number of contestants with assets worth more than one crore rupees stands at 64 (out of the 315). This points to a very clear trend of growing money power in politics among parties across the spectrum.

This is the gist of the analysis: 

34 Candidates face criminal charges (Nearly 11%)

64 Candidates own assets worth more than a Crore rupees ( 20%)

34% of the candidates are below 40 years.

62 Candidates have not specified their educational qualification.

TDP Candidate from Khammam Mr Nama Nageswara Rao heads the list of richest contestants in Phase 1 with a net worth close to Rs. 174 crores.

82% of the Candidates from Congress own assets worth more than a crore rupees.

5 out of 11 candidates from TDP face criminal charges. (Nearly 45 %)

More than 50% of the affidavits do not reveal the complete information that a voter needs to know about their candidates.

Close to 50% of the candidates are graduates or hold higher qualifications.

We believe this analysis will help the voters make informed choices. Please find attached the detailed analysis done by NEW AP on contestants of Phase 1 elections for Lok Sabha from A.P. Similar analysis of affidavits of Parliamentary candidates for Phase 2, and Assembly candidates for both phases shall be done and presented to the voters at the earliest.

About National Election Watch Andhra Pradesh National Election Watch is a nationwide campaign comprising of more than 1200 NGOs and other citizen led organizations working on electoral reforms, improving democracy and governance in India.
