ELMER OLSON (son of my maternal grandfather's sister & a close friend of Arthur) Elmer Olson, 40, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Olson of the town of Belmont, died at the Wisconsin Veterans' Home Hospital Saturday night (29 November 1938) as a result of burns received that day, when gasoline exploded while he was refilling the fuel tank of a tractor which had run dry while he was plowing in a field at the home of his parents. The gasoline had evidently spilled over on the hot motor and ignited. The tractor was not running at the time of the accident. The victim, who was alone in the field, fought the blazing gasoline on his person with his hands and then lay on the ground and rolled until the flames were extinguished. He then walked to his car, which was parked on the opposite side of the field, and drove to the Blaine Store, about a mile away. There he asked for gasoline for his car, saying he was going to drive to the hospital, eight miles away. Realizing the con dition of Mr. Olson, Clarence George, proprietor of the store, accompa nied him to the hospital, where he walked into the hospital and was con scious until his death some time later. At the time Mr. Olson reached the store his clothes were practically burned off his body, and he told Mr. George that had he immediately rolled on the ground instead of fighting the fire with his hands, his burns would probably not have been so severe. The victim, who weighed more than two hundred pounds, was in splendid physical condition, and it was this fact that made it possible for him to endure the trip to the store and hospital. Elmer Olson was born March 28th, 1898, in the Town of Belmont and had since resided there. He enlisted in the World War service in January 1918 and was discharged in October 1919, after taking part in six bat He served as corporal in a first artillery corps and also in the Army of Occupation. He was a member of the Almond American Legion post and was commander at time of his death. He was also a member of the Al mond Masonic order and of the Lanark Modern Woodsmen.

Those surviving are his parents and a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Olson of Milwaukee. Services were held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Olson home and at 2:00 p.m. at the Blaine Methodist Church. Interment was made at the First Belmont Cemetery. The Almond American Legion Post conducted services at the grave and a National Guard firing squad fired a salute. ALBERT OLSON (son of my maternal grandfather's sister; Elmer's brother) Albert F.
