NAMES OF GOD BY IRENE MCGOUGH
NAMES OF GOD
Jehovah Jireh Gen 22:14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORDWill-Provide; as it is said to this day, "In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided." It means "The Lord Provides." When God commanded Abraham to sacrifice Isaac his son on Mount Moriah, Abraham immediately set out to obey. Abraham understood his covenant relationship with God. He simply proceeds to obey. When his son Isaac asked "where is the sacrifice?" Abraham softly answered, "God will provide." His heart must have been breaking. And even though he totally trusted God, he must have felt some confusion and bewilderment. Just as he raised the knife, the angel intervened. Abraham is shown a ram caught in a nearby thicket. And he cries out, "We will call the name of this place Jehovah Jireh!" We will never have a need that God does not know about. He is Jehovah Jireh, The Eternal God our Provider. this same God who sent His only Son to die for us, that we might receive the greatest gift of all, His grace and mercy poured out for us securing our
redemption
Jehovah-Rapha It means "The Lord who Heals" Exo 15:26 and said, "If you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you." The word Rapha means to heal, restore, or cure. God is our healer. Sometimes He heals dramatically and immediately. Sometimes He heals more slowly using doctors or medicine. But the healing process is a wonderful gift from our God, Jehovah Rapha. Why not call out to Jehovah Rapha if you are sick or depressed? Why not cry out to Him and acknowledge that He is God, your Healer? Jehovah-Nissi Then there is Jehovah Nissi. It literally means "God, my Banner or God my Standard of Victory" Exo 17:15 And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-LORDIs-My-Banner. The Amalekites had refused to allow the Israelites to pass through their land and they had to fight. Moses sent Joshua into the valley to fight the battle, while Moses stood on the mountain to hold high the rod of God. The rod was their "standard." It could be a flag, or a banner, or it could be only a high pole. But all the soldiers could see it. It represented victory. When you are in spiritual warfare, remember that God is Jehovah Nissi. He is Our Eternal God, your banner of Victory. We can praise Him with words like, " Jehovah Nissi, I want to thank you that You always give the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." Jehovah-M'Kaddesh "I am the Lord Who makes you Holy." Or "Who sets you apart for My Use."
Lev 20:8 And you shall keep My statutes, and perform them: I am the LORD who sanctifies you He himself makes us holy and separates us apart for His use. He Sanctifies us. Don’t feel unworthy, it is God Himself who wroughts the change in us, we need to submit to Him and He will make us fit to serve.
Jehovah-Shalom Jdg 6:22 Now Gideon perceived that He was the Angel of the LORD. So Gideon said, "Alas, O Lord GOD! For I have seen the Angel of the LORD face to face." Jdg 6:23 Then the LORD said to him, "Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die." Jdg 6:24 So Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it The-LORD-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. Israel was being oppressed by the Midianites. An Angel was sent from God to Gideon to remind him that the Lord was with him and that God was going to use Gideon to deliver Israel. At first, Gideon did not recognize the angel for who he was. And at first he argued with him. When he finally did realize that he had been in the presence of an angel of God, he was terrified. He thought he might die. God spoke peace to him and Gideon built an altar to the Lord and named it after this name of God, "Jehovah Shalom." "God is Peace!" The Nation was at war with the Midianites and Gideon discovered that not only does God give peace, but God IS our peace. The next time you are in a time of stress, turmoil, fear, anxiety, tension, or worry, try praising Jehovah Shalom, God your Peace.
Jehovah-Tsidkenu Jer 23:5 "Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. Jer 23:6 In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely;
Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. 1Co 1:30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God--and righteousness and sanctification and redemption--
God is totally righteous. He demands righteousness in us. And He tells us that this is what He requires of us. 2Co 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Satan wins many victories when we do not realize that our God is Jehovah Tsidkenu and what he requires from us. When we fail or stumble, when we have sinned against God, Satan will try to tell us that we are so unworthy and so weak and so guilty and render us incapable of doing anything worthwhile in God's service. We must learn to repent and confess our sin to God, and then to gladly accept that He is Jehovah Tsidkenu, God our Righteousness. He has declared us to be righteous. It is His gift. And we can go on boldly,not in our own righteousness, but in HIS.
Jehovah-Shammah Eze 48:35 All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE." The last part of the vision of Ezekiel was of a new city, with a glorious new temple. He is "The Eternal God who is There." He is with us. The fire that left the temple in Ezekiel's day returned on the day of Pentecost and rested on the heads of men and women who had just become temples of God. Jehovah-Rohi Psa 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd;
I shall not want. God is our shepherd.He is our guide. He leads us. He feeds us. He comforts us. No other name of God carries the tenderness and intimacy of Jehovah-Rohi. Psalm 23 1 JEHOVAH-ROHE is my shepherd; JEHOVAH-JIREH is my provider, I shall not want. 2 JEHOVAH-SHALOM , my peace maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 JEHOVAH-RAPHA, God my healer, restoreth my soul: JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU, my Righteous God, leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH, my God who is present with me for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 JEHOVAH-NISSI, God my banner preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: JEHOVAH-MEKADDISHKEM, my Holy God, who makes me holy anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of JEHOVAH for ever. _________________
