Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a set of distinct genetic disorders that cause tumors to grow along various types of nerves, and it can affect the development of non-nervous tissues such as bones and skin. Neurofibromatosis causes tumors to grow anywhere on or in the body. NF1 occurs in 1:3,000 births. There is no specific treatment of Neurofibromatosis type 1, but some neurofibromas (tumors that grow on the skin or in the body) can be removed. It depends on the location, what functions it will affect, and how fast it is growing. Otherwise, radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy are other options. For patients with high blood pressure, there are many medications, but they don't always help. Most of the time, if a surgery is done to lower blood pressure, it will help.
