The Thompson’s neighbors were interrogated during the trial, too. After Mary, Joan and Tony gave their testimonies, the lawyer called two more witnesses, Kate and Chris. -Tell me Chris…Where were you at the moment of the crime? -I was outside my house. -And who were you with? -I was alone. -What were you doing alone outside? -I was having breakfast. I was finishing my tea when I saw a man in black escaping. -Thank you, Chris. The lawyer then interrogated Kate. -Where were you?

In a very small city, there lived the Thompson’s family. They lived in a very old cottage and the windows and doors were always closed. Arthur, the father, kept a safe box in his bedroom. This box contained important and valuable possessions: jewels and a golden watch.

-I was at the park. -Who were you with, Kate? -I was with my boyfriend. -What were you doing? -We were listening to music when we saw Arthur taking his mask off!

One morning, the golden watch and the jewels disappeared! Arthur’s wife, Sarah, was not at home that morning. She worked a lot and was never at home. The only person at home that day was the servant, Martha.

-Aha! Thank very much, Kate. Arthur was finally found guilty. He had to confess his crime. He wanted more money to escape from the city. They found out that had committed more crimes! He was sent to prison for 15 years. 16

The lawyer then interrogated Martha. -Where were you at the moment of the crime? -I was at the Thompson’s house at that moment. -And who were you with? -I was alone! Mr. and Mrs. Thompson were working. -And what where you doing? -I was cooking lunch. I always cook before they arrive.

When Arthur realized that his valuable possessions were not in the box, he quickly called the police. The police officer, Mr. Richardson, interrogated Sarah and Martha, who were now suspects. Martha was the first one. She was very scared. “During the morning, I was cleaning the kitchen and I was cooking lunch”, she said. “I did not steal anything!”

-Ok Martha, thank you very much. Sarah and Martha were found innocent. At the end, the lawyer interrogated Arthur

The detective then interrogated Sarah. “I was at school with the other teachers that morning. We were talking about our students’ tests”, said Sarah. “I did not steal anything from my husband!” Finally, he interrogated Arthur. “I was working at the office in the morning. I left the box closed, as usual.” After the interrogation, the police officer left the house.
