YEARS ACTIVE 1993 – present (26 years) MEMBERS o Bamboo Mañalac (1994 – 1998) o Japs Sergio (2001 – 2012) o Jason Fernandez (2007 – 2011) o Jayson Fernandez (2007 – 2011) o Kakoy Legaspi (2001 – 2004) o Mark Escueta o Mike Elgar (2001 – present) o Nathan Azarcon (1994 – 2001) o Norby David (2011 – present) o Perf De Castro (1994 – 1995) o Rico Blanco (1994 – 2007) o Ryan Peralta (2011 – present) o Victor Legaspi (2001 – 2004)

Rivermaya is an influential Filipino rock band founded in 1993. Their musical direction has evolved through standard rock, hard rock, pop, progressive, and other genres. They are the second biggest-selling artists in the Philippines. Early years The first line-up consisted of Jesse Gonzales on vocals, Kenneth Ilagan on guitars, Nathan Azarcon on bass, Rome Velayo on drums, and Rico Blanco on keyboards. They were managed by Lizza Nakpil and director Chito Roño who had the intention of molding the group into a rock show band. The band was then called Xaga. Classic line-up and mainstream success In the process of grueling practice sessions, Ilagan was replaced with Perfecto de Castro; Azarcon's childhood friend, Mark Escueta, to replace Velayo, as well as former classmate Francisco "Bamboo" Mañalac to replace Gonzales. With Bamboo as frontman, the band members themselves decided to disband Xaga and form the band Rivermaya. They started putting together original songs like "Ulan" , "214", and "Awit ng Kabataan" (mostly composed by Rico Blanco) in demo form for prospective recording companies. Nathan Azarcone was one of the members of Rivermaya from 1993 to 2001. By November 1994, the band had released its first album, the self-titled Rivermaya, and its first single, "Ulan"; followed by "214". Critically praised for its fresh, excitingly new pop/rock sound, the album went on to become one of the best acts in the 1990s. Citing artistic differences, Perf de Castro was adamant in leaving the group and founded his own band, Triaxis. The band's second album Trip, followed with the singles "Kisapmata" , "Himala" , and "Panahon Na Naman" . Whilce Portacio, creator of the X-Men's "Bishop" and co-founder of Image Comics, designed the album art for Trip. In 1997, the band released its third album, Atomic Bomb, with the single "Hinahanap-hanap Kita" . The album gained positive responses from listeners and received heavy airplay from radio stations. During this period, Rivermaya also released the "Rivermaya Remixed" album, put together with the help of DJ Toti Dalmacion of Groove Nation. Departure of Bamboo Mañalac and second evolution of line-up The band then embarked on a US and Canada tour. It was at this time that Bamboo Mañalac decided to stay in the US. He eventually went on to form his own band, Bamboo in 2003. Rico Blanco was the chief composer of the band, he later became the band's full time guitarist when Perf de Castro left one year after their debut album was released & later became the band's frontman after the departure of Bamboo in 1999. Rivermaya decided to forge on, with Rico Blanco taking on vocals and released their fourth album, It's Not Easy Being Green containing the singles "Nerbyoso", "Shattered Like", and "Rodeo". The band released its fifth studio album, aptly called Free, entirely for free on the Internet as well as on CDs distributed at their gigs. Free went on to be named "Best Album of 2000" at the NU Rock Awards. Nathan Azarcon departed from the group signaling a new lineup change. Completing the lineup were new guitarists, Kakoi Legaspi (from blues band Mr. Crayon) and Mike Elgar (from 7 Foot Junior) as well as Japs Sergio (from Daydream Cycle) on bass. Together, this lineup released "Tuloy ang Ligaya", preceded by the EP "Alab ng Puso" (featuring a remix by Raimund Marasigan's Squid 9). The band released the albums Tuloy ang Ligaya and Between the Stars and the Waves, producing the singles "Umaaraw, Umuulan" , "Wag Na Init Ulo, Baby", "A Love to Share", "Balisong", "Sunday Driving", "Table for Two", "241 (My Favorite Song)", and "Atat". Kakoi Legaspi resigned in 2004.

International success The band found a variety of partners who commissioned such works as "Liwanag sa Dilim" , "Posible" (Southeast Asian Games' Athletes Anthem) and "You'll Be Safe Here". "You'll Be Safe Here," originally created as the theme for the ABS-CBN TV series Spirits (directed by Rivermaya co-manager Chito S. Rono) would be the song to take Rivermaya outside the country. Released as an EP by Warner Music Philippines, it also became the song that MTV Asia selected for performance at the 2006 Asia Awards. Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child introduced the group, and they were backed up by Thailand’s Royal Symphony Orchestra during live performance. It was the first time that a Filipino band was invited to perform in the said event. An album of compiled works, titled You'll Be Safe Here, is distributed in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Rivermaya embarked on a series of Asian tours, including at Thailand's Pattaya Music Fest (2008, 2009) as well as Singapore's Mosaic Festival (run by The Esplanade); and Bangkok's Fat Fest as well as in Indonesia's MTV Staying Alive show. In the Philippines, the Rivermaya Greatest Hits 2006 album on Viva Records was followed by an album dedicated to its music heroes: Isang Ugat, Isang Dugo . At the end of March 2007, Rivermaya scored again another first for the Philippines as their videos, "You'll Be Safe Here" and the recent video remake "Bali Song" were chosen as the first Asian artists to have full-length music videos featured on the Star World Channel. In 2008-2009 Rivermaya performed at the Marina Bay New Years' Countdown in Singapore and became the first Filipino band invited to perform at the 2009 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. Departure of Rico Blanco On May 2007, rumors of Rico Blanco quitting the group surfaced. The band's management team refused to comment, as did the other members. It was not until a few more days before Rico Blanco officially announced his departure from the group. Both Rivermaya and its management have taken the announcement in stride and have denied rumors that the band would disband as a result. "No one member is greater than the whole," declared Rivermaya management in an official statement released on June 14, 2007. After Rico Blanco left, Rivermaya released a new single, "Sayang" , penned by Japs Sergio and described by the band as "an open letter to the fans." In addition, Studio 23 announced the selection of Rivermaya to create the new theme song for the station. The new song is titled "Sumigaw" and marks the release of a second single in two months for the band, accelerating Rivermaya's pace for new songs rapidly (In previous years, the band had managed to release only a single every 12 months). On August 11, 2007, during a mini press conference held at Mogwai Bar and Café in Cubao's Marikina Shoe Expo, Rivermaya released its all-new 5-song Bagong Liwanag EP, which hit stores nationwide starting August 15. This 5-song EP is released on the band's own label, Revolver Music, and licensed to Warner Music Philippines. Rivermaya also held auditions for a new member. Out of more than 400 participants, only 80 were chosen to join the semi-finals. The auditions was televised on Studio 23, which was titled Bagong Liwanag (A New Light). Aside from the band members, main judges are Rivermaya manager Lizza Nakpil, The Dawn guitarist Francis Reyes, and Razorback bassist Louie Talan. New frontman and third evolution of line-up On October 24, 2007, then-18 year old Jayson Fernandez was announced as the winner and new member of Rivermaya. This third evolution of Rivermaya offers an ensemble cast (with the four members offering their vocal prestiges) as compared to their previous lineups. On February 2008, Rivermaya released the album entitled Buhay with the carrier single "Sugal ng Kapalaran" penned by Sergio with both Fernandez and Sergio doing the vocals, while Elgar and Escueta do backing vocals.

URBANDUB  

YEARS ACTIVE 2000 – 2015 (15 years) MEMBERS o Gabby Alipe (2000 – 2015)

A Philippine-based band proudly waving the banner of hometown Cebu, Urbandub is growing to be a titan, a superpower of the Pinoy independent rock movement. Local or International, they're jet-set to stir up waves, raising the level for today's modern angst. Listen up and try their songs for size. Their craft could only get better. ABOUT THE BAND: Urbandub is Gabby Alipe (Vocalist / Guitarist), Lalay Lim (Bassist), John Mendoza (Drummer) and John Dinopol (Lead Guitarist). Urbandub's career thus far has given much inspiration and support to upcoming acts, most of which fall under the Lighter Records stable such as Faspitch, The Ambassadors, Still, Nuncyspungen (Cagayan) and Point Click Kill (Ilo Ilo). Each of them now aspire to take their own roads in music, paving their own way and modeling some of their steps after the success of Urbandub. From the very first day that this band was formed (in the year 2000), they were destined to be something more than the ordinary. Forced to be independent due to the lack of support coming from major record companies, Urbandub released their debut album called BIRTH. Off of this album, the hit tracks “Come”, “Give” and “Would You Go” launched and took their world by storm. Unique, timely and yet experimental, it was something that entertainment scenes around the Philippines needed: a kick-start into the future of original music. With the release of their sophomore effort, INFLUENCE (Lighter Records), Urbandub took on a new form, changing their sound with a new drummer (From Jed Honrado to Jerros Dolino). It was the sound in this album that clearly defined the steps that Urbandub would start to take. The track “Soul Searching” later won the award as Best Song of the Year in the NU107 Rock Awards 2003. Pushing the sound further, the collection bagged the Album Of The Year Award in the NU107 Rock Awards 2004. Urbandub released their album EMBRACE in 2005, and with it, it proved that there is hope for struggling artists. With help from their community and the noise they created, they were able to grab the attention of EMI Music Philippines. Since then the band has kept Lighter Records as their management arm and guide. In line with their ideals, EMI allowed the members the creative freedom to record their album on their home soil of Cebu. They have also been able to maintain their independent principles while taking major steps into the scene that has awaited their new sound. After more than 10,000 albums sold, thousands of miles traveled around the country and some dizzying highs and lows, an energized Urbandub returned with UNDER SOUTHERN LIGHTS in 2007. o o

Gosh Dilay Yael Yuzon

Among the many acts currently on the local scene, Sponge Cola has managed to rise above the college band cliché and become a lasting and powerful force in the Philippine music industry. Sponge Cola is comprised of Yael (vocals), Armo (guitar), Gosh(bass), and Chris (drums). Formed when its members were still in high school, the band quickly established itself and began playing gigs regularly at venues all over Metro Manila. In September of 2003, they celebrated their first independent release with the 5-track EP containing the songs, “Lunes”, “A Tear”, “Saturn”, “Cigarette”, and “Jeepney.” “Lunes” and “Jeepney”, both written in Filipino, were released as singles and proved to be a hit with local audiences. Extensive radio airplay was instrumental in broadening the band’s fan base across the nation. In the last quarter of 2004, Sponge Cola signed a record distribution deal with Sony Music Philippines for the release of their full-length album, entitled “Palabas” in reference to the band members’ theater backgrounds. The album showcases a definitive voice in unadulterated rock, reminiscent of 90s alternative but laced with enough sing-along pop sensibility to appeal to a wider audience. It displays a seamless blend of the band members’ varied influences, while showcasing a sound that is refreshingly unique. The 14 original tracks contain traces of each band member’s musical preference: Gosh grew up on classical Filipino balladeers from the likes of Basil Valdes and Martin Nievera; Armo lends to the rock edge, citing bands like Tool, Deftones and A Perfect Circle as influences; Chris admits to being influenced by acts like the Beatles, Foo Fighters and Gin Blossoms; and Yael listens to everything from pop to 80s power ballads up to the new metal phenomenon of the late 90s. Following the release of their album, Sponge Cola found even greater success, as evidenced by several noteworthy accomplishments. They won the “Rising Sun Award” at the NU107 Rock Awards for successfully crossing over from the radio station’s core audience to the wider pop audience. MTV dubbed the band as their “Rising Star” for the month of December 2004, and the first single off the album, “KLSP”, was well-received by both radio and television audiences. The video for the single, which was released in early 2005, hit 1 on multiple MYX charts and stayed on the charts for several weeks. In late February, “Palabas” became the first rock album ever released through a full distribution deal to hit gold in the Philippines. After the success of “KLSP,” the band decided to take a much-needed break to concentrate on their studies, as they were about to go into their senior year at Ateneo de Manila University. However, they continued to be a visible presence on the gig circuit, playing venues in Metro Manila as well as in the provinces, such as Naga, Iloilo, and Palawan. With the release of their second single, Sponge Cola continued to rise in the music industry. “Gemini” was released simultaneously on radio stations and hit the 1 spot on 99.5 RT in just a day, a first for the station. A few days after, the song reached the top spot on 97.1 LSFM as well. Sponge Cola found another hit single in “Una.” Released in early November, the song was well received by the band’s fans and enjoyed extensive airplay on major radio stations. The video for the song, directed by Wincy Ong, reached number 1 on the MYX charts. Another recent triumph for the band was lead singer Yael’s award for Best Male Rock Icon at the 2005 NU107 Rock Awards. In addition to this, Sponge Cola’s rendition of the Eraserheads classic, “Pare Ko,” is featured on the tribute album celebrating one of OPM’s most influential acts. To cap off their successful year, Sponge Cola also had the honor of holding the No.1 spot on 99.5RT’s year-end countdown. Another radio station, RX93.1, chose Sponge Cola as their Indie Artist of the Year, proving that the band’s accomplishments in 2005 did not go unrecognized.

As musicians who are not only working but were also pursuing their college degrees for some time, the members of Sponge Cola have inadvertently become role models for their younger fans. They have broken out of the mold of a traditional rock band by advocating clean living, hard work, and diligence. Bassist Gosh was an academic scholar, and, along with the other members, graduated with flying colors March of 2006. Just a few months after their graduation, they started recording songs for their sophomore album. After months of additional song writing and recording, “Transit,” was ready to be released. By the first week of September 2006, the album was out in all the major record bars nationwide. Transit proved to be a fitting title for the band’s second album because not only did it capture the feel of the songs, it also encapsulated the members' growth as individuals and musicians. With the young band members finally graduating from college and releasing their pivotal second album, the band suddenly had to adjust to a fairly new predicament. Transit captures the period of adjustment that the band members went through as it is in fact "the next step," a statement that implies transition, not stagnation. Musically, the band has also matured over the years. With the two year gap between their albums, there was a big leap in terms of musical direction, but at the same time they maintained the essence that took them to the dance—soaring vocals underscored by intense guitars and relentless rhythmic pounding. The added dimension of well-placed ambient layers of guitar and riff-based song writing created a more diverse album. There was evidently a different approach for each song, strengthening the identity of each individual track. “Bitiw,” their carrier single from Transit, has claimed the top spot of various radio stations all across the country. It was their fifth consecutive music video to skyrocket to the 1 position in the MYX hit chart and stayed there for a prolonged period of time, due to the acceptance of the Filipino people of their brand of music. Other highlights in the album include the six minute epic “The Wandering” which pays tribute to well known TV series Lost; “Movie,” the band's current single which immortalizes the feeling of people in the “friends zone”; “Do You Know The Feeling,” an 80s inspired stadium rock song; “Nocturne,” a poignant piece that tackles insomnia and remembering of a past love.

IMAGO   

YEARS ACTIVE 1999 – present (20 years) FOUNDED IN Quezon City, National Capital Region, Philippines MEMBERS o Aia de Leon (1997 – 2013) o Mikkel Kofoed

There are three bands currently sharing this name. The featured songs from the albums Running and Live @ Fnac are from the second one (portuguese Imago)

1) Imago (Philippines) is a pop rock band composed of Aia De Leon (vocals/guitars), Myrene "Maps" Academia (bass), Tim Cacho (guitars) and Zach Lucero (drums) and known for songs such as Akap, Anino, Ewan, Taralets and Sundo. Imago was formed in 1998. They wrote an album’s worth of original material which they recorded under the helm of producer and musician Bob Marlow. Their first album Probably Not But Most Definitely was released in 1999 under Maharlika Records. The band has picked up a handful of Katha and NU107 Rock Awards (Best Female Award for Aia De Leon and Best Music Video for "Akap") from the first cd. Imago’s second album was released four years after. Recorded in 2003, the cd’s release was delayed by unexpected record label setbacks. Enthusiastic over their new songs however, the band was determined to release the album no matter what. Composed of eleven new cuts (plus four remixes by some of Manila’s premiere electronica acts), the material is relatively heavier compared to the first album. Released independently, Take 2 featured hit songs such as Akap and Anino. In 2006, Imago released their third album, "Blush" under Universal Records with "Taralets" as the lead single which was one of the certified hits of 2006 in the radio and music video channels. The song was also used as a theme song for the movie "Pitong Dalagita" and as a campaign jingle for a Philippine senatorial candidate. In the same year, they recorded a revival of Ewan, which was originally sung by the Apo Hiking Society. In 2007, they earned a nomination for Favorite Artist in the 2007 MYX Music Awards. They also released their second single of their "Blush" album, "Sundo". The music video was directed by Marie Jamora which was also the director for their previous videos, Akap and Taralets. More recently, the group has released their third single called Walang Misteryo (No mystery), and pretty soon the video will be released in all music channels. 2) Imago (Portugal) is a power-pop rock band. Here is a brief history of the group: 1992 - The Beginning In the end of 1992, the Bruno, Pedro and Bernardo were studying at the Intermediate school Francisco Franco, in Funchal, when they started meeting frequently to play together. They were joined by Márcio (vocals), Filipe with a bass guitar and Tomás playing keyboards. 1993 In little time they had started to play some songs and this group of friends decided to present themselves as Almagesto in the SUPER ROCK band competition, Funchal, on December of 93. This was their first live presentation, and the madeiran public was warm: Almagesto obtained second place in SUPER ROCK'93 competition. 1994 After this first experience, “it became clear that it was necessary to take the band more seriously” and the new requirements made Filipe and Márcio leave the band. On December of 94, the Almagesto had come back to participate in the SUPER ROCK, where they presented three new songs (one sung by Bruno, another one for Pedro and another by both). The new formation and the new songs were again well received, and Almagesto again reached second place in this competition where 15 bands competed. 1995

Little time after this second participation on the most important music festival in Madeira, before the Tomás left the band, Almagesto met Lucy in the Marginal bar, in Funchal, during a show where she suggested singing a song from Cranberries. Lucy, at the time living at London, was on vacation at Madeira. The rehearsals that followed resulted in new songs and Lucy became the official singer in Almagesto. With the return of Lucy to London, the band started to rehearse separately by circulating tapes between Madeira and London. 1996 On December of 1996 Almagesto had decided to participate again in the already the mentioned competition of music in Funchal, now called SUPERFM ROCK. In this edition, the Almagesto were considered the best band of pop/rock of Madeira, reaching the first place. 1997 On 1997 Almagesto recorded in the Tcha Tcha Tcha studios, Lisbon, a CD with six original tracks, coproduced by Carlos Jorge Valleys (Cajó) , producer of, among others, of the album “Tentação” by Xutos and Pontapés. This promotional CD was the conquered award after wining the SUPERFM ROCK'96 and was presented to the public in the auditory of RDP Madeira. The CD made it to Antenna 3, where it started playing on the national music programs. 1998 With the localization of all the elements of the band in Lisbon, Almagesto decided to rethink the activity of the band and take some decisions, among which, to be called Imago and to try to broaden its audience. At this time Imago incorporated three new elements in the band: Jari on groovebox and sampler, André Franco on the flute and Helena Ornelas on saxophone, which brought a more electronic and experimentalist character to the band. On this year Imago plays a bit all over Portugal: * Performance at palco 6 of Expo '98, where they play with the Silence Four; * Another performance on Expo '98, this time on the Sony -stage. * They play the first part of a Xutos e Pontapés gig in Franca Village; * First part of the Foo Fighters gig in Porto Coliseu, where they were enthusiastically greeted by the young public. 1999 In this year they obtain the second place on the national competition of Castro Verde, and are invited to appear in the compilation of the north american site Audio Galaxy, being the only Portuguese band to appear on this collection. Still in 1999 they performed some gigs: the first part of "The Gift", on the main stage of the "Festa da Juventude" at the Cais da Pontinha, Funchal. In the end of that year, they record a track for the Coca-Cola Garage Bands compilation and play a memorable concert on the mythical Ritz Club in Lisbon. For professional reasons the band members had to start living geographically separate from each other, forcing a hiatus.

2007 - the return As a consequence of the return of some elements to Funchal (Lucy, Pedro e Bruno), the band comes back in September of 2006, this time with new element Bruno Pais (Bass player), starring with 10 new tracks on February 2007 on the Kelts stage, on Funchal. 3) Imago is a Polish psytrance project (Grzegorz Magnuszewski & Tomek Roehr). 4) IMAGO is a Polish rock band from Tuczno. The band: Mateusz Urbanowski, Arkadiusz Rubak, Bartłomiej Biela, Marcin Kostrzewski, Dawid Ślusarski.

HALE 

YEARS ACTIVE 2004 – present (15 years) There are more than one artist with the name Hale: 1) Alternative rock band from Philippines. 2) American singer/songwriter. 1) Hale is an alternative rock quartet that originally formed from the southern part of Metro Manila. The band consists of Champ Lui Pio (vocals, rhythm guitar), Roll Martinez (vocals, lead guitar), Sheldon Gellada (bass guitar), and Paulo Santiago (drums and percussion), Join The Club's former drummer who replaced Omnie Saroca in 2008. This four-piece rock alternative outfit collected themselves at the core of one goal to reach out the listening crowd and make them understand the value of the band’s musical sincerity. From the start, all they really wanted was to musically express themselves and be heard. But they didn't count on the massive chart-topping power of their sounds that spawned a new pop rock genre they've coined 'melodrama'. Hale (2005-2006) It was their self-titled debut album in 2005 that propelled them to the local mainstream and gained them their already growing popularity. Singles like Broken Sonnet, The Day You Said Goodnight, Kahit Pa and Kung Wala Ka monopolized music charts across the nation with one impressive hit after another. In that same year the album reached Triple Platinum Certification, sealing their name as one of the country's most acclaimed bands. Twilight (2006-2008) In October 2006, the band released their much-awaited sophomore album Twilight that jolted the OPM scene with experimental lyrics and sounds that featured a wider spectrum of musical arrangements: rough riffs and darker, more intricate lyrics. It was a move that most music artists wouldn't dared to do in such an early stage. But Twilight had successfully topped the charts once again with 15,000 units sold only a week after its release. With already two successful albums under their belts, Hale suddenly decides to take a break and announces a 'hiatus'' from the exhaustion and the pressure to record the second album.

Above, Over and Beyond (2008-2009) After their hibernation, Hale returns with a new album and a newfound passion. It took ten months to complete their third effort Above, Over and Beyond, but was eventually released on April 2008 which contained fresh singles like Pitong Araw, Sandali Na Lang, Over and Over (And Over Again) and Leap of Faith. Unlike before, it features a new sound that showcases the band's further artistic abilities without repeating what they've done before. Kundiman (2009-present) The band is set to promote their fourth album, Kundiman, in July 2009. As of now, the first single they've released from their effort is Bahay Kubo. 2) Hale Sheffield is a singer + songwriter born and raised in Brooklyn. When Hale was 15, she came up with the name Easy Socks. It has been her stage name for 4 years now, but as she's has gotten older she's found the importance of going back to her roots.

SANDWICH There is more than one artist with this name: 1) Sandwich was founded in 1998 by Raimund Marasigan and Diego Castillo for the purpose of fulfilling their mutual desire to work together. Castillo recruited former band mates (from The Aga Muhlach Experience) Mike Dizon (of The Teeth) to play drums and Myrene Academia to handle bass duties. Marasigan was a judge at a contest where Marc Abaya jammed to a Beastie Boys song with his band, Shirley Beans. Although existing simultaneously with the Marasigan's foremost band at that time, Eraserheads, Sandwich provided a heavier, grittier sound, and built up their own fan base. Abaya was still in college at the time, and Marasigan would still tour occasionally with the Eraserheads, but these weren’t hindering factors for Sandwich, as there were many sessionists ready to take over in case of a member’s absence. They signed with then-BMG Records, now known today as Sony-BMG Music, and released their debut album, Grip, Stand, Throw, with much success, thanks to its carrier single, "Butterfly Carnival." The band won three awards at the 1999 NU 107 Rock Awards: Album of the Year, Best New Artist, and Song of the Year. They released their second album, Four-Track Mind, in 2000; it was awarded Album of the Year at the Rock Awards in 2001. Sandwich then parted ways with BMG Records and released their third album, Thanks To The Moon’s Gravitational Pull, in 2003. It was under distribution by EMI Records Philippines. Abaya left Sandwich in 2005, in an effort to cope with the difficulty of juggling his job as an MTV VJ, and his obligations to his other band, Kjwan. Marasigan has since taken over sole vocal duties. After Abaya’s departure, the band wrote songs for soundtracks, like "Humanda Ka," which was done for the online game, Tantra, and "Nginiig" for the ABS-CBN show of the same name. Mong Alcaraz of Chicosci joined the band late 2005 to solidify Sandwich’s new sound and assume guitar duties Abaya left behind. They released their latest album, Five On The Floor, in early 2006.

In late-October 2006, their songs "Sugod" and "DVDx" became available in the online music game O2Jam. The video for "Sugod" won five major awards at the 2006 MTV Pilipinas Video Awards including Video of the Year, Best Director, and Best Editing. Recently, Sandwich member Mong Alcaraz and Myrene Acamedia had won the best guitarist and best bassist in recent NU Rock Awards 2006 respectively. 2) Band hailing from Columbus, Ohio featuring members from bands as diverse as The Lindsay, Brainbow, The Fighting Weight, and The Tough and Lovely, and fronted by known estate-sale vinyl proprietor, Ron House. Randomly formed in 2007. on the occasion of Columbus' annual Rock Potluck. SARAH GERONIMO 

SOUTH BORDER   

YEARS ACTIVE 1996 – present (23 years) FOUNDED IN Davao City, Davao (Region XI), Philippines MEMBERS o Brix Ferrarris (1993 – 1998) o Duncan Ramos (2002 – 2007) o Vince Alaras

South Border is the Philippines’ premier Pop and R&B band formed in the 90s and gained even recognition in the music scene in the 2000s. Having undergone several permutations in its long career, South Border has nevertheless retained its unique sound and musical sensibility and has even moved up along the current global trends in music. Hence, retaining the top spot in their particular musical genre. Much credit goes to musical director and lead creative genius Jay Durias, the staunchest unifying force that has kept the band and its music alive and thriving.

The band, whose name is a tribute to their roots in Davao down south, first came into national prominence in 1996 when they launched their first self-titled album. It included a Jimmy Antiporda song entitled “May Pag-Ibig Pa Kaya’ which they interpreted in the Metro Manila Pop Music Festival earlier that year. Another song, “Kahit Kailan” was awarded 1996 Song of the Year by various radio stations, thus giving them their first big hit. The following year, the album reached gold, then platinum. South Border was all set for their first major concert at the Araneta Coliseum. As expected, thousands of their new found fans trooped to fill the massive dome to the brim. Before the end of 1997, the exceptional talents of South Border was recognized by their peers in the industry when they bagged the most number of trophies at the 10th AwitAwards including Best Performance by a New Duo or Group, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Produced Record of the Year for their hit song, “Kahit Kailan”. By the end of 1997, their debut album has gone triple platinum and South Border was a certified star band. Not long after that, in the midst of a flourishing career, South Border found itself in the eye of a storm which called for a conspicuous change in their lineup. Luke Mejares replaced Brix Ferraris on lead vocals. But despite discouraging forecasts, South Border got back on their feet in no time. In a rush of creative adrenaline, the band doubled their efforts to finish their second album called Bump! It featured “Sa ‘Yo” a haunting ballad that spoke of a heart’s yearning for a loved one and “Reborn,” South Border’s first attempt at recording an instrumental piece reminiscent of their early jazz influences. In 1999, South Border once again caught the critical eye and bagged a total of 12 Katha Music awards including Record of the Year, Best Pop Song, and Best R&B Song—all for “Sa ‘Yo”. The following year, the band released its first live recording which was well-received by their fans and drew rave reviews from critics. At the turn of the new millennium, the band once again made waves with the success of “Habang Atin ang Gabi” the theme song from La Vida Rosa a Rossana Roces-Diether Ocampo film. The lyrics were written by scriptwriter Armando Lao and the music was composed by Jay Durias, who considers this song to be one of his best compositions and arrangements to date. The same song became the carrier single for their fourth album, The Way We Do released in 2001. In November of the same year, South Border staged their biggest major show at the 30,000-seater PSC Track and Field Oval. But in the final quarter of 2002, another surprise jolted South Border’s avid followers: the announcement that Luke was leaving the band to go solo. The search for his replacement was going to be another grueling task. Having gone through another major change in their lead vocals lineup, the band scored a major win when they got not one but two astonishing vocal talents in Vince Alaras and Duncan Ramos. 26-year old Vince, was a member of La Salle’s Kundirana and was then known as “the boy who sounded like Brian McKnight". The younger Duncan on the other hand was a child prodigy — a singing and dancing wonder boy who often accompanied Gary Valenciano in his shows and tours allover the country. The two new talents who danced as well as they sang, provided a fresh and youthful take on South Border which has since then came up with the current hits we all hear on the radio and even on television today. The biggest of which is perhaps “Rainbow” which first hit the airwaves in 2003 for the promotion of megastar Sharon Cuneta’s Metro Manila Film Festival entry, Crying Ladies. South Border’s music even dominated television with their song “Ikaw Nga” —the love theme from the phenomenal hit TV series Mulawin. In 2004, the band released their first album under their own independent label. Episode III was a gigantic commercial success that included hits “The Show” and “Brown Hand Smash” — two songs that gave the group an edgier, danceable R&B sound. PARAMITA

Paramita is fast becoming one of the most solid independent acts in the scene today, enlightened by music and strenghtened by a belief in their own unique talents. Named after the Buddhist mantra of perfecting practices, Paramita embodies this by valuing perfection with the music they produce. Paramita is composed of Ria Bautista on vocals and drums, Alsey Cortez on bass, and Marco De Leon on guitars. With the drummer also playing as the vocalist, this set-up definitely differentiates Paramita from other local bands. Love and relationship are the main themes of this band’s music. And just like love, their music is indescribable, giving you room to experience the enigma. With the songs all penned by Ria, Paramita rightly captures the highs and lows of love and wraps them into a heart-pounding, rhythmic web – minus the mushiness. This gives Paramita the right kind of mix to cater to their diverse audience. livebands.com.ph BARBIE’S CRADLE  

Side A’s music captivates with their original songs that bring back a lot of memories. Known for their romantic ballads and up-beat live performances, the group never stops reinventing themselves and have worked hard to give their very best in both recordings and live concerts. As multi-awarded and certified platinum recording artists, Side A is considered as the most durable band in the country today and continues to be an ever-innovative musical force in the industry. As of 2009 the band members are: Joey Generoso (lead vocals/acoustic guitar) Naldy Gonzalez (keyboard/vocals) Ernie Severino (drums/vocals) Leevon Cailao (lead guitar/vocals) Ned Esguerra (bass/vocals) GARY VALENCIANO 

This much talked-about group plays a critically-acclaimed melange of spoken word poetry, Jazz, punk, soul, afro-latin, metal, and a mad sundry of musical styles sprinkled with massive doses of humor and irony. The groups's perennially surprising stylistic excursions have earned them a cult following, from critics to art fans, to discerning rock audiences. Fronted by four-time Palanca Award-winning writer Lourd De Veyra with alumni from the UP College of Music completing the 8-piece ensemble, this group made waves with their 2000-released self-titled debut album which spawned the hit Gusto Ko ng Baboy. Their recently released 2nd album Urban Gulaman under independent label Terno Recordings jumped to Tower Tecords' list of top-sellers in its first week out in the market and includes the track Astro, winner of MTV's most stylish video award and NU Rock Awards' Rock Video of the Year. Their third album entitled "Tangina Mo Andaming Nagugutom Sa Mundo Fashionista Ka Pa Rin" was released in early 2007 under Terno Recordings. The group claims that despite what the album title states, they hold no grudges against the so-called fashionistas. BORN IN Berlin, Germany There are at least ten bands/artists with the name (band name) NINA.. (1) Nina is an eurodance artist from the 90's (Nina Gerhard). Nina Gerhard is the vocalist in the superhit "More and more" by Captain Hollywood Project. She has released 1 album (Dare) and 5 singles. (2) NiNa are a six-piece group formed in 1999 containing Kate Pierson (a member of the B52s), bassist Mick Karn (from the British group Japan), vocalist YUKI (from the Japanese rock band Judy and Mary), Takemi Shima and Masahide Sakuma, Japanese musicians from the Plastics, and Steven Wolf, the session drummer. Sakuma Masahide composed most of the music with input from Pierson and Yuki who also wrote the lyrics. From the 30-second opening track, which starts with ominous techno music and ends with Yuki and Pierson exclaiming "Hello everybody nice to meet you we're NiNa," the band's eponymous and only album is very diverse. The distinctive album contains a wide variety of music from straight forward ballads to electronica. Credited as a "conceptual and visual agent provocateur", Shima appears to have played a Brian Eno-like role on the recording. The album and two singles which proceeded it were all hits in Japan but are unfortunately almost unknown in other parts of the world. (3) Nina is a singer/songwriter from Croatia, Zagreb. She has released 1 EP Nina/Izae, recorded in summer of 2006. Her songs are mixture of melancholic ethno & folk. (4) Nina (Marifil Niña Girado) (November 1, 1980) is a Filipino singer born in Quezon City, Philippines. She sings pop and R&B, especially ballads, with power, delicacy and emotion. After the 3rd series, she stepped down, and was replaced by Kike Santander. In 2006, she took back to the stage, and premiered new music live on a special summer edition of Operación Triunfo, although none of it is yet to be released. Nina has also starred in the Spanish version of the musical 'Mama Mia!' (8) Nina Tolins is a prominent singer with powerhouse vocals and a 4-octave range, a sultry r&b / jazztinged voice immersed in old & new school rock stylings, dynamic, emotional & electric delivery, songwriting beyond the original (& some pretty famous sidemen!), Rocketeria Records recording artist, MY Space Top Artist and ASCAP showcased songwriter, NINA, has created an unprecedented buzz with the NYC music scene as fans & club owners alike nickname NINA “THE VOICE”. The news has spread quickly to new fans & sales from places as diverse as Europe & Nashville to Seattle & Japan !! Nina brought down the house at Caesar’s, Atlantic City when Patti LaBelle called her on-stage to sing “At

Last” a’ cappella and had “the joint jumpin’” as a vocalist for jazz legend Marion McPartland & her trio. Singing since the age of 3, NINA has worked with some of the top names in rock, jazz & r&b : Steve Holley, Harry Whitaker, Myron Walden, Chico Hamilton, Junior Mance, John Reilly, Joe Magnarelli, Gene Paul, and Alan St. Jon; to name just a few. She has performed at some of music’s top venues – from large concert halls such as the Eastman Kodak Theater, Tillis Center, and Disney World, to the more intimate, famous clubs of NYC – Sweet Rhythm, The Bitter End, Kenny’s Castaways, The Cutting Room etc. She and her song “Gabriel” were chosen for inclusion in the Time/Warner off Broadway play Sex Is More Than A Three Letter Word which ran at The Producer’s Club in NYC. Her Lion’s Den, NYC gig was also featured by Time/Warner in an interview broadcast on their show What’s the T. The release of NINA’s first album, NEW SCHOOL ROCK, RHYTHM & GROOVES, was met with wide acclaim for its synergetic merge of both old school and new school rock. Lauded as an eclectic blend of classic rock, jazz, r&b and pop, NINA worked on the album with some of the best in the business: Elisa Hale producing with Bob Stander at the board, legendary drummers Steve Holley & John O. Reilly, famed jazz artists Harry Whitaker, Joe Magnarelli & Myron Walden and mastering legend Gene Paul. Her upcoming 2nd album - REBEL WITH A CAUSE - is set for release January, 2009 and features radio-friendly songs written by Nina and Elisa Hale which continue her journey of combining Rock, R&B, Pop and Jazz into an eclectic mix of stunning vocal performances. Nina has just received her Bachelor’s degree in Jazz & Contemporary Voice from the Mannes Conservatory Program at The New School University. After the release of two commercially successful major label albums, a change in line-up, and a long hiatus from the mainstream circle, one would think that the band behind the hits Torete, Sulat, Sa Langit (now the theme music to Surf detergent) would rest on its laurels and comfort zones in terms of songwriting and playing. Moonstar88 defies this stereotyping with their latest album under Sony BMG. Maychelle Baay (vocals/guitars); Herbert Hernandez (guitars); Paolo Bernaldo (bass); Bon Sundiang (drums) came up with a very apt title TODO COMBO! While most bands’ music grows but personally drifts apart, this group confesses that their journey together has grown further from being mere band members to a band fully-bonded by experiences on and off the road. Four individuals with careers outside the band – the restaurateur and music video director Paolo, advertising guy Herbert; radio marketer Bon; and clinical researcher Maysh- has emerged with a fresh and positive spin to songs such as Tadhana, Can’t Stop, Migraine and their much-lauded version of APO classic Panalangin. Tracks such as Di Kasi, Late Ka Na Naman, Bintana, and their YANO remake – Senti, meanwhile, remain faithful to the band’s trademark sound. The band name "Oranges and Lemons" was initially recommended by a former member of the group. Apparently the band was not aware at that time that the name was actually derived from a British nursery rhyme and a title of an album by the British band "XTC". So they changed it to "Orange and Lemons". With a style of retro music combined with alternative rock, the band has become few of Pinoy Rock bands that have definitive sound that separate them from the rest of pure pop and rock. The band's main musical influences range from The Beatles and The Smiths, to The Cure and The Eraserheads. Orange and Lemons or ONL is a grand and swift crossover story from their humble beginnings as a virtually unknown act in the scene to being independent artists to being artists under major label Universal Records Philippines. Their songs enjoyed massive airplay in radio stations and music channels in the country resulting to the band gaining popularity and winning fans of different ages and backgrounds. Their hit songs as of 2006 include "Just like a Splendid Love Song", "Hanggang Kailan (Until When)", "Heaven Knows (This Angel Has Flown)", "Abot Kamay (Within Reach)" and the massive and

controversial hit song "Pinoy Ako ('I'm Filipino)," which was the official soundtrack of Pinoy Big Brother, Philippines' franchised version of the reality TV show Big Brother. Their 3rd album entitled MOONLANE GARDENS was released June 8, 2007. The band officially disbanded September 29, 2007.

YEARS ACTIVE 1998 – present (21 years) FOUNDED IN Cebu City, Cebu, Central Visayas (Region VII), Philippines MEMBERS o Jay Justiniani (2001 – 2015) o Ruben Caballero

Cueshé's members all hail from the city of Cebu, Philippines, where they used to play as a show band. In 2005, they moved to Manila and started to play as a pop-rock band. Their name comes from bananaCUE (bananas cooked with charcoals, a delicacy in the Philippines) and the pronoun "she." They used to practice their music in the bedroom of their current bandleader Mike Manaloto – it was the band’s makeshift rehearsal studio. After practice, they would have Banana Cue, a cheap but nutritious Filipino street food for snacks, as it was what they could afford as students. This

became the inspiration for the first syllable of the band's name. The “shé”, pronounced 'shay,' comes from the gender of the vocalist, who was female. According to the band, an accent was added at the end of Cueshé to make it attractive to hear. After surviving a near-death motorcycle mishap in December 24, 2001, Jay Justiniani replaced the female vocalist. Guitarist/lead vocalist Ruben Caballero later joined the group. His contribution to the band evolved from only doing vocals with Jay to playing the guitar. Pianist/Keyboardist Jhunjie Dosdos came into the band with musical experience from his younger years. He joined numerous singing contests when he was still a kid. In his former band, he performed vocals and guitars. In March 2005, the band took a risk by moving to the capital to become full-time musicians. They were urgently signed up and rushed to the studio. MEMBERS * Ruben Caballero - Lead vocals / Rhythm guitar * Jhunjie Dosdos - Keyboards / Backup vocals * Jay Justiniani - Vocals * Fritz Labrado - Bass (Songwriter) * Jovan Mabini - Lead guitar * Mike Manaloto - Drums (Songwriter) * Carlo delos Santos - Masahista (mascot) DICTA LICENSE 

YEARS ACTIVE 1999 – present (19 years) Dicta License was formed towards the end of the year 1999, with Pochoy Labog on vocals, Kelley Mangahas on bass, Boogie Romero on guitar/vocals, and Bryan Makasiar on drums. The original line-up that was brought together was basically a merge of two bands that were starting out during that time. Shirley Beans and Reaction 105 were bands that were already making a push to prove themselves in the music scene. However, certain things didn’t work out and the bands were broken up. From the remains of these two groups emerged Dicta License. TYPECAST   

YEARS ACTIVE 1999 – present (20 years) FOUNDED IN Laguna, CALABARZON (Region IV-A), Philippines MEMBERS o Steve Frank Badiola (1999 – present)

Typecast is a Filipino Emo/Alternative-Punk band originally from the Laguna Punk/Emo scene. Typecast was formed in the year 2000 in the province of Laguna. They were originally a quartet doing cover songs, and eventually started making their originals. As they were gathering more listeners with their increasing fame, two members left leaving them the option to obtain a new guitarist. This was later done in the inclusion of Steve Frank Badiola who did both vocals and the guitar. Recently, as of the

release of their new album, the band has added another guitarist, Frank Fletchero, and in effect, Typecast is a quartet again. Typecast released their debut CD Last Time, which is an independent release. The lead single of the album, also entitled Last Time, got the group into guesting in the radio station NU107's program In The Raw. Since then, their fame rocketed upward, primarily in the underground music scene. They were already performing in large musical events such as the Fete de la Musique 2005, and also did the opening act for the foreign band Good Charlotte in the latter band's Manila tour. The band, along with other famous Filipino rock bands like Kamikazee, Kjwan and Moonstar88; was also included in the compilation album Rok On! for Philippine Ragnarok Online. They have also released their second album entitled The Infatuation Is Always There that feature 12 tracks of their distinct complex sound. With the release of the single The Infatuation Is Always There from the said album, they have exponentially increased their fame and their fanbase. As of the moment, the band has released a new album, entitled Every Moss And Cobweb. PUPIL Pupil is a Filipino rock band composed of Eleandre Basino Buendia a.k.a Ely Buendia on vocals/guitars (from the Eraserheads), Yan Yrastorza Yuzon on lead guitar, Wendell Garcia (of Barbie's Cradle) on drums and Dok Sergio (from the bands Teeth and Daydream Cycle) on bass. Although the band itself is relatively new, all of its members have some experience in the Philippine music scene. Pupil is managed by Day Cabuhat (who also used to handle the Eraserheads) and Ely Buendia's wife, Diane Ventura, who was also manager for The Mongols. Pupil is composed mainly of the members of the band, The Mongols. In May 2005 The Mongols' guitarist, Jerome Velasco, a.k.a J. Astro, left to pursue studies abroad. The remaining members added Dok Sergio from the bands The Teeth and Daydream Cycle to their lineup. The band noticed that they were producing a different sound without Velasco on the lead guitar and decided to form a "new" band. Frontman Ely Buendia chanced upon the name Pupil while browsing a medical book. The band wanted a classic name for a rock band. Before using Pupil, they tried several other names, such as The Gets, Traitors, Tyrel Corp and Narcom. They chose the name Pupil because Buendia liked the fact that it was the part of the eye where light enters. Guitarist Yan Yuzon likes its double meaning, as well as the “eternal learning” connotations of the name. Beautiful Machines, Pupil's debut album was released on November 10, 2005 under Sony BMG, the same music company that publishes the Eraserheads' music. The band itself describes their music as "dark, loud, and romantic." Yan Yuzon describes their genre as "Everyrock" meaning an amorphous mass of rock and roll, classic and stadium rock, punk, New Wave, glam rock, goth rock, heavy metal, grunge, and everything in between. It is very guitar-driven, stripped down, and the album has a very distinct sound, considering that it is the band's debut album. The album was recorded digitally at Wombworks in Marikina. “We didn’t use amps at all,” Buendia says. The band admits that there is a distinct challenge for them, coming out of their past bands (Eraserheads and The Teeth). The challenge is particularly pronounced on frontman, Ely Buendia, since older fans tend to compare him and his new band with the huge popularity of The Eraserheads before. In an interview by Y. Losorata he says, "I just want my fans and hopefully, my fans to be, to appreciate my music. I’m lucky to still have my career in music as a job and as part of Pupil wala akong (I don't have) delusions to

become as big as my previous band was." In fact, the band itself describes their music as actually "one foot in the past, one foot in the present and both eyes dead set at the future." Local radio stations' reception of Pupil's music, though, is relatively limited (with the exception of NU 107) due to the band's genre and musical style. While the band's carrier single, "Nasaan Ka?" was played often and achieved quite a popularity among listeners, other singles released from their album encountered more hurdles. Frontman Ely Buendia says, "Some pop radio stations are still making up their minds on "Dianetic" which I personally don’t understand since it’s really just one of those straightforward love songs medyo on the noisy side nga lang (just a little bit on the noisy side). "Then again, minsan talaga hindi mo maintindihan ang ibang radio stations (sometimes you cannot understand some radio stations). It’s not as if they don’t play songs by foreign artists like Nirvana with music heavier on distorted electric guitar than ours. Pero okay lang (But that's okay), that’s the reality of things." He speculates that colonial mentality has something to do about the double standard these radio stations go by. Consequently, they were forced to release an acoustic version of their second single, "Dianetic". The acoustic version of "Nasaan Ka?" was then used for Sony BMG's sampler. However, the band considerably had early success. They were featured as the Rising Star for the month of May, 2006 in MTV Philippines. In the 19th Awit Awards held in Casino Filipino, they won the Award for Best Performance By A New Group Recording Artist/s Category. They received another award for their first single, "Nasaan Ka?" at the MTV Pilipinas VMA 2006, bagging the Best Rock Video Award. Then, Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chose them as their promotional models for their product along with Barbie Almalbis, another local artist. In Novermber 26, 2006 Pupil won the SOP Music Awards 2006 Breakthrough Recording Artist Of The Year Award. THE DAWN 

YEARS ACTIVE 2007 – present (12 years) There are several bands named "The Dawn". 1) A French mathcore / hardcore band: https://www.facebook.com/thedawnhxc / http://thedawn.bandcamp.com/ 2) The Dawn is a rock band formed in the Philippines and which gained popularity during the late 1980s in the Philippines. The band broke up in 1995 and eventually, lead vocalist Jett Pangan formed another band bearing his name. In 2000 however, they again reunited. The Dawn was originally formed in 1985 by Teddy Diaz (vocals and guitars), Jett Pangan (lead vocals), Clay Luna (bass), and JB Leonor (drums). They derived the band's name from a portrait of the Holy Spirit that symbolized the dawn of a new day; it is also a crucifix which Teddy received from his grandfather. Diaz, Leonor and Luna initially wanted a female vocalist; but in the course of their search, Jett Pangan auditioned and bagged the trio's unanimous nod. The recharged quartet began performing in clubs and eventually recorded a demo of a song entitled "Enveloped Ideas," a copy of which they submitted to DWXB 102.7, a now-defunct Metro Manila–based FM radio station that played Alternative Rock / New Wave music. It topped the radio station's charts in 1986, helping the group gain a cult following. Heavily influenced by the New Wave style of the '80s, "Enveloped Ideas" is distinct for its introductory operatic vocals a la Klaus Nomi. While The Dawn was in search of a major record label, Luna left the band to emigrate to the US. Carlos "Caloy" Balcells, bass player of another Filipino band, the Cicada Band, soon replaced him.

In 1986, The Dawn signed with OctoArts International and, in the summer of that year, released their eponymous debut album, which gained commercial success. Many felt that The Dawn would fill the void left behind by Juan Dela Cruz when their music slowly faded in the 1980's. At the height of their popularity just weeks after the release of their second album I Stand With You on August 21, 1988, Teddy Diaz was stabbed to death in front of his girlfriend's house. Despite the demise of Diaz, his influence is still felt among many guitarists until today and he has become a legend among many Filipino musicians. The Dawn, together with whole Filipino music industry also considers Teddy to be the band's driving force till this day. The band bravely soldiered on; at one time employing the services of a masked guitarist in the absence of a permanent axeman. Atsushi Matsuura, a Japanese guitarist who had earlier released a solo album in the Philippines under Ivory Records, was later inducted to perform lead guitar duties. He was later replaced by Francis Reyes, ex-After Image, who was also a DJ at NU-107, a local alternative rock radio station. Classically trained session keyboardist Millette Saldajeno joined the band in late 1990; she was replaced by Isidore Fernandez in 1992. In 1995, the band went their separate ways due to Pangan's desire to move on with another career. Pangan eventually formed the Jett Pangan Group. The 1997 reunion at the ULTRA brought everyone including Matsuura back on stage, and for the first time, the band jammed with two guitarists; Reyes being on board as well. They did another reunion show at the now defunct ABG's along Pasong Tamo, while they were discussing a comeback release through Sony Music Philippines. They reunited with both Francis Reyes and Atsushi Matsuura on guitars and performed on GMA Networks' 2000 today Global Millennium Day Broadcast in Ayala Avenue in Makati City. In that year, they also recorded Prodigal Sun, an album that, much like the parable of the Prodigal Son, symbolized their return to the music scene. In 2004, Caloy Balcells left the band in order to perform his duties as city councilor in his native Talisay City; he was replaced by former Wolfgang bassist, Mon Legaspi and a few months later the band once again parted with Matsuura and returned to being a quartet. In 2005, a new album, Harapin (To Face), was released, featuring singles such as Tulad ng Dati (As It Was) and Laging Narito (Always Here). In late 2005, bassist Mon Legaspi amicably left the band to pursue other projects and was replaced by Buddy Zabala, formerly of the Eraserheads. The revamped quartet has been writing new material which will be included in a twentieth anniversary package. They will also be featured in a Cinemalaya sponsored movie slated for release July or August of 2007. The Band's immortal hits include: Enveloped Ideas, Salamat (Thank You), Iisang Bangka (One Boat) and Tulad ng Dati (As It Was). These songs still continue to be played by many radio stations in the Philippines. From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dawn_(band) 3) The Dawn is a Danish christian rock band formed in 2007. Website: http://www.the-dawn.dk Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thedawndk 4) The Dawn was a British rock band from Preston, Lancashire, signed to Rough Trade Records in 1996. They released two mini albums, "Getting By On The Good Times" and "5 Days Wiser". JOIN THE CLUB Having been identified as “the beach boys of the new century”, the band still believe that own musical style will come up with a same perception as the rest of the local groups in the country. A lot of people

that heard their music still consider the significance of the term “for the masses”. An easy listening sound that makes the band really accept what they love doing and that is songwriting. Influenced by the bands like No Use For A Name, NOFX, Blur, Oasis, Air, Zero7, Dashboard Confessional and also the Beatles. Incorporating the sound of the 60’s and the new generation of punk music would make them sound different to many punk-rooted bands in the local scene. Taking place in front of the semi-limelight world, the four lads make an astonishing presentation on how they deal with the mob. Boosting with so much energy, the soul of the songs make a good whack on each and every listener. 2002-2008 Biboy Renia – Vocals, Guitars Migs Mendoza – Guitars, B.Vocals Congie Lulu – Bass Guitars, B.Vocals Pao Santiago – Drums 2009-Present Biboy Renia – Vocals, Guitars Migs Mendoza – Guitars, B.Vocals Congie Lulu – Bass Guitars, B.Vocals Brian Lotho – Drums RICO BLANCO 

BORN 17 March 1973 (age 46) Rico Blanco (born March 17, 1973) is a Filipino musician. He is one of the founders of Filipino rock band Rivermaya, where he served as vocalist, pianist, guitarist, and chief songwriter from 1993 to 2007. Blanco has so far recorded, written and produced more local and regional number one hits than any other musician since 1994, and has sold over a million albums in the Philippines and Southeast Asia during that period. For those who waited a year, Rico Blanco's new album "Your Universe" is definitely worth it. It's a defining mark in the 35-year-old musician's career, and a reminder that he has the freedom to experiment and collaborate with others without compromising sound. Through the ten tracks of "Your Universe," we can confirm that Rico's personal passions are gracefully translated into songs distinctly and undeniably his, even as he collaborates with some of the industry’s best musicians for this album. He knows how to tickle the fancy of Filipinos by delivering the right amount of romantic prose minus the extra saccharine shot of sap. Perhaps it can be said that he knows the formula of the Filipino's heart which makes his music work. Definition and identity. This is what sets Rico Blanco apart from most of the local acts. He knows his niche in the industry and makes his mark the way a true blooded artist should: original and a strong definition of one's identity. CALLALILY

Callalily is a Filipino pop-rock band. They released their first album, Destination XYZ, in 2006 with hit singles like "Stars", "Take My Hand", "Magbalik", and "Pasan". From the record label that produced the country's top great bands like Cueshé, 6cyclemind, and Brownman Revival, Sony BMG Music Entertainment introduces another discovery that will set another trend in the music scene in the band "Callalily" armed with their debut album "Destination XYZ." Their first single "Stars" is fast-gaining heavy airplay on top radio stations and its music video can now be seen on favorite music channels. "Stars" was a successful single, peaking at #1 on MYX, it was also nominated as Favorite Song at the MYX Music Awards 2007. Their 2nd single "Take My Hand" peaked only at #3 on MYX but their 3rd single "Magbalik" scored them another #1. As of April 22, "Magbalik" spent 7 consecutive weeks at #1, being the successor of "Stars", which spent 3 consecutive weeks at #1. The music video of the song, "Pasan" premiered at MYX, on June 01, 2007 Friday and quickly debuted in the MYX Daily Top 10 on June 4, 2007 at #9. It recently made an 7 non-consecutive day streak at #1 and also the latest #1 song "Pasan" on the MYX Hit Chart for 6 non-consecutive weeks. They belong to a group of talented bands of Soupstar Entertainment who fed us with their purely cool songs. Also in the group are Imago, Juana, 6cyclemind, Rocksteddy, Kala, Protein Shake, Manomano, Sandwich, Frio, Mayonnaise etc. As of now, they are already arranging their second album. But the band did not give any specific details about it. WOLFGANG 

YEARS ACTIVE 1998 – present (21 years)  FOUNDED IN Elverum, Hedmark, Norway There are two artists with this name: One is a hard rock/metal band from the Philippines; the other a "robot pop star" from Brooklyn. As the Philippine band came along first, this article begins with them. WOLFGANG The Philippines music scene is not a very conducive environment for metal/hard rock music, dominated as it is by solo artists performing sugary love songs and easy listening tunes. Wolfgang, however, has defied the odds to become one of the country's most popular and best-selling acts, its name synonymous with hard-driving riffs and precision group interplay. Wolfgang formed around 1994. Vocalist Basti Artadi (born Sebastian), bassist Mon Legaspi (born Ramon), and drummer Wolf Gemora (born Leslie) started in other local bands and guitarist Manuel Legarda returned to the Philippines from living in Spain. As much music in the Philippines is greatly influenced by Western sources, Wolfgang took their cue from Metallica, Soundgarden, and Led Zeppelin, among others.

Wolfgang submitted demos of two original compositions, "Darkness Fell" and "Left Alone," to local radio stations, which generated many listener requests. The band signed with Def Tone, a label of local independent Ivory Records. Wolfgang released its first album, Wolfgang, in 1995, at a time when a rock craze, which started the previous year, was underway in the country. At the 1995 NU107 Rock Awards, the country's premier rock awards show, Artadi was nominated for Vocalist of the Year, Gemora for Drummer of the Year, and Legarda for Guitarist of the Year. The band was nominated for Artist of the Year and Best Live Act. Legarda was named co-winner for Guitarist of the Year. The band signed in 1996 with a major label, Epic of Sony Music Entertainment Philippines (SMEP). Wolfgang's first Epic release, Semenelin, reached at least double-platinum status (80,000 units sold – Wolfgang does not allow SMEP to release precise figures, but does allow it to state if the album reached gold, platinum…). Wolfgang became one of the most popular bands in the Philippines. Semenelin was named Album of the Year at the 1996 NU107 Rock Awards, where Artadi won Vocalist of the Year, Gemora took Drummer of the Year, and the band was named Artist of the Year and Best Live Performer. Semenelin was released in the United States in an all-English version in March of 1997, with two songs originally performed in Tagalog, the Philippines' national language, re-recorded in English. The other tracks on Semenelin were originally recorded in English. Wurm was released in late 1997, and was an outstanding, most adventurous set, truly a landmark album that reached platinum status (40,000 units). The lower sales than that achieved by Semenelin can perhaps be attributed in part to the downswing of the rock movement, which had started several years earlier. This, however, does nothing to diminish the standard set by Wurm, which was nominated at the 1998 NU107 Rock Awards for Album of the Year, which also saw Artadi winning his second Vocalist of the Year award, and Gemora winning his second Drummer of the Year award, while the band took honors for Listener's Choice and Artist of the Year. Wurm, which was recorded entirely in English, was released in early 1998 in Japan, the world's secondlargest market for recorded music, and Wolfgang performed several showcases in Japan to promote the album. Wolfgang's fourth album, Serve in Silence, was released locally in March 1999, and saw a return to the style purveyed on 1996's Semenelin. Though another critical and commercial success, it did not see international release. Serve in Silence was nominated for Album of the Year at the 1999 NU107 Rock Awards, as well as for Best Album Packaging. Wolfgang was nominated for Artist/Band of the Year, and all four band members were nominated for individual awards: Basti Artadi for Vocalist of the Year, Manuel Legarda for Guitarist of the Year, Mon Legaspi for Bassist of the Year, and Wolf Gemora for Drummer of the Year. In addition, Wolfgang was nominated for Producer of the Year. Serve in Silence tied for first place for Album of the Year, and Basti Artadi won again for Vocalist of the Year, his third overall win in this category. Wolfgang also won the Listener's Choice award. In February 2000, the excellent live album Soundcheck: The Live Recordings, featuring Wolfgang and three other rock bands signed to Sony Music Entertainment Philippines, was released. For the 2000 NU107 Rock Awards, Basti Artadi was nominated once again for Vocalist of the Year, Wolf Gemora for Drummer of the Year, Mon Legaspi for Bassist of the Year, and Manuel Legarda for Guitarist of the Year. Basti Artadi won yet again for Vocalist of the Year, the fourth time he has received this honor. In late 2000, Wolfgang released a live concert album, Acoustica 9/30/2000, a beautiful set on which previously recorded songs were played in an acoustic manner. Several guest artists, including guitarist David Aguirre of local rock band Razorback, also participated. The album reached gold status.

In April 2001, in conjunction with U.S.-based music retailer Tower Records, Volume, a compilation of Wolfgang material culled from all four of its studio albums, including its first Ivory Records set, was released in Tower Records stores in the U.S. and Australia. Vocalist Basti Artadi's participation in a side project with members of labelmateRazorback culminated in a release in August 2001 of an acousticstyled rock album entitled, Brain Salad. Wolfgang's next studio album, Black Mantra, a double-album set, was released locally in August 2001 Wolfgang has disbanded since then. WOLFGANG Developed in the early 1980s by greedy video game tycoon William Jennings Wellworth as an expensive prototype robot capable of human feeling, Wolfgang was also extensively analog-programmed with an encyclopedic knowledge of the popular music of the era, with the idea of creating the world's first robot pop star, capable of writing hit songs. Having developed some of the most influential titles of the newly-emerging video game industry (such as "Rocketship Rangers" and "Galaxy Battalion"), Wellworth turned his attention to robotics and artificial intelligence. Utilizing video game microchips in conjunction with the synthesizer and sequencing technologies of the age, Wellworth assembled a humanoid robot with the capacity to autonomously compose music. Essentially force-fed huge libraries of The Human League, New Order and the like, it was hoped that Wolfgang would pay Wellworth back in kind in the form of huge record sales and royalties. Despite putting all the vast resources Wellworth had into the project, Wolfgang was not able to create under his cruel and cold hand. This failure cost Wellworth his fortune as well as his reputation. He was never heard from again. Nearly 25 years later, renovations to convert the crumbling Wellworth Electronics factory in Brooklyn into luxury condominiums had rallied a group of young neighborhood activists to take action against what they saw as the impending gentrification of their poor artistic community. During a nighttime mission to vandalize the building, one of the activists discovered Wolfgang discarded in a dumpster amongst endless amounts of electronic waste. With a thorough cleaning and a battery charge, Wolfgang became operational again. Developing special feelings for the young man who had provided rescue from the dumpster, Wolfgang had at last experienced a human emotion. That emotion was love. This awakening allowed Wolfgang to begin composing music, just as Wellworth had intended. The man loved to dance, and Wolfgang enjoyed providing the beats. Soon Wolfgang would begin writing and performing songs as a show of bravado for the object of the robot's affection. And some songs were written in private. As Wolfgang began to realize that a human can never truly love a robot, the music became a way to deal with the emotional sensory overload. Wolfgang's songs illustrate the experience of happiness and heartache, of the initial joy and eventual hopelessness that accompanies unrequited love. Wolfgang has issued two titles through the New York label Hypnote Recording Concern. The EP "Not In Love (Not True)" was released in late 2005, along with a 7" single which adds an extra track. The EP also has two bonus tracks not included on the then-forthcoming album, including a cover of Lime's "Angel Eyes". The album "The Wicked Truth About Loving A Man" was issued in 2006, although all of the material for it was recorded in 2004.

KYLA Kyla refers to at least three recording artists: 1. Kyla is a popular and successful female Filipino singer who has risen to fame in the Philippines with songs such as "Because Of You" and "Someone To Love". She had 6 mainstream album and is currently working on her forth coming. Born Melanie Hernandez Calumpad on January 01, 1981, she is dubbed as the "R&B Princess of the Philippines". Kyla also sang a duet with Jay-R covering Christian Bautista's hit "Say That You Love Me". Kyla also won the 2001 MTV Asia Awards. She is currently a host and performer on a popular Philippine show on the GMA Network. 2. Kyla refers to Kim Carlsson's one man project. Kim Carlsson is a swedish musician, member of bands such as Hypothermia and Life is Pain, both bands having their lyrics and atmosphere based on depression, melancholy and pain. Kyla follows the same depressive style and ideology. Kim is also one of the founding members of swedish depressive black metal/rock band Lifelover. 3. Kyla is a UK based funky House artist, known for such tracks as "Do You Mind" and "Daydreaming" CAROL BANAWA 

BORN 4 March 1981 (age 38) Carol Claire Aguilar Banawa (born March 4, 1981, in Pasay City, Philippines), better known in the Philippines as Carol Banawa, is a Filipina singer and actress. She was born in Pasay City to Albino and Cirila Banawa. She has two siblings, Alexander and Cherry. She was raised in Batangas. Self-confessed as an "ugly-duckling", Carol dreamt of having a musical career at a very young age. Having a thought that her dream would never come true, her family chose to believe in her drive for success. Carol entered a junior beauty pageant during the late 1980's when she was eight years old. She was eventually invited to join the new roster of ABS-CBN stars through the children oriented show "Ang TV" and became a famous music star in the Philippine music mainstream. APO HIKING SOCIETY 

YEARS ACTIVE 1969 – present (50 years) The APO HIKING SOCIETY first gained recognition in 1973 when they gave a farewell concert at the plush Meralco Auditorium in Metro Manila. Just out of college, the group was the talk of the Ateneo University and adjoining campuses for their music and humor. It was only when two of its four members were about to retire from the field of amateur music, however, that the APO, then known as the Apolinario Mabini Hiking Society, finally had a city-wide audience. One of them was scheduled to leave for Turkey as an exchange student. The other had a position waiting for him in his father's advertising firm. Why a talented young man of 21 would want to go to Turkey, every young man in the early seventies would probably understand. But what the APO could not understand was their fourth member's decision to leave the irresponsibility of being unemployed to join the ranks of the corporate world. The trip to Turkey did not materialize and the APO, now a tentative trio, pushed on steadily towards fame and fortune.

Looking back, the APO members Danny Javier, Boboy Garrovillo, and Jim Paredes do not regret never having been regular wage earners. Their farewell concert, which had SRO audiences for two stormy nights, not unexpectedly became a hit record the following year. In the three decades since that "farewell" concert, the APO has made 22 record albums; hosted several television shows including their own noontime Sunday show "Sa Linggo nAPO Sila"; and launched hugely successful major solo concerts and countless provincial, dinner, and corporate shows. They have performed in over 50 cities in the United States, in Canada, Singapore, Indonesia, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Japan to bring Original Pilipino Music to Filipinos the world over. In October of 1987, during their annual US tour, the APO became the first Filipino pop artists to perform at the Main Hall of New York's prestigious Carnegie Hall. They also performed at the equally prestigious Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada's music capital. Both concerts, as well as the other shows held during that particular concert tour, were sold out. The APO were also the first Filipino artists to perform in a public concert in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 1987, they were one of the first Filipino artists to be recorded on compact disc. And in 1994, they were awarded the first Dangal ng Musikang Pilipino by Awit Awards - the Filipino equivalent of the Grammy. They have also been conferred the Tanglaw Ng Lahi Award, the highest accolade given by Jesuits in the field of culture and arts. The APO also earned international recognition for Jim Paredes' anthem on the bloodless Philippine revolution in 1986. "Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo" was recorded by 15 Filipino artists in April 1986. A few months later, the English version "A New and Better Way" was launched in Australia. In February 1987, the first anniversary of the Philippines' People Power revolution, the song was released in London, England. The lyrics of the song are embedded on a wall of Our Lady of Edsa Shrine, the center of the revolution. MYMP  

M.Y.M.P. (or MYMP, short for Make Your Momma Proud) is an acoustic band from the Philippines, which consists of five members. Their career started when Raymond Ryan, a station manager of iFm, watched one of their gigs, and met up with a producer to produce their 2003 debut album, Soulful Acoustic, which has since been certified Platinum. In 2005, M.Y.M.P. released their second album titled Beyond Acoustic and third album Versions through Ivory Music. The success of the two albums prompted the re-release of their second and third albums in atwo-disc set the same year. In 2006, they released their fourth album, New Horizon and DVD of their concert at the Music Museum. In 2008, M.Y.M.P. released their last album on Ivory Music, titled Now, as the group signed a deal with Star Records. NARDA

Narda formed in the Philippines in 2002 with the simple goal of being able to write songs and share them with anyone who cared to listen. Having cultivated a humble fan base and a reputation as one of the best unsigned bands around, Narda has released four EPs and their first full-length album Formika (which

drew raves from Pinoy rock music insiders) all under the bands flagship indie label Ponkan Music. They released their follow-up album 'Discotillion' in 2006. It all started with the pioneering core of drummer Ryan Villena, frontwoman Katwo Librando, bassist Wincy Ong(previously on guitars) and guitarists JV Javier and Ed Ibarra. Ryan, Katwo, JV and Wincy were previously in the band Lilian together with Yan Yuzon of Pupil. By October 2002, Narda had recorded their first EP "A Postcard From" composed of four tracks. Then on December 13, 2002 – to dispel all bad luck on a Friday the 13th – the band released its second EP aptly titled "Suwerte" also containing four songs. By this time, Narda had definitely defined its sound as a band, the buzz was definitely out and the band was gaining a steady fanbase. Over Christmas vacation of 2002, Narda recorded their stripped-down acoustic EP called "Burador", experimenting with sparse arrangements, mean backwards guitars and string arrangements. It was released in early 2003 containing four songs. By 2003, Narda was gigging heavily and their songs Crime-fighting Mama and Suwerte were earning steady airplay over the local rock stations. Narda started recording their fourth EP "Salaguinto't Salagubang" in the summer of 2003. The EP , which carried five songs including the single Jaywalker and Meron Ba?, was launched at the now defunct Millenia on September 2003. By this time, original guitarist Ibarra had left the band due to work concerns and former Lilian guitarist Nico Africa had rejoined his former bandmates in Narda. Even if Ibarra had played most of his guitar parts in the "Salaguinto.." EP, it was Africa who played during the EP launch. Narda had intense songwriting sessions late 2003 to early 2004 for their first full-length album. Recording the album "Formika" took exactly one year (from February 2004 to February 2005), and was released (under Ponkan Music) on March 5, 2005 at Gasoline Alley. The album contained twelve tracks Formika wound up on critics' best-of-2005 lists. After several gigs promoting their album, gigging took its toll on guitarists JV and Nico. The two decided to leave amicably the band due to work concerns right about the time Narda was to celebrate its 3rd birthday. Narda then recruited Jep Cruz for keyboard duties with Wincy sliding to guitar duties again, leaving the bassist position vacant. The third incarnation had a new sound, going back to their late 70s to 80s new wave roots and forged a new sound that is both intriguing and compelling. In late 2005, Wincy left Narda to pursue his craft and was replaced by Tani Santos . Through gigging and songwriting, Narda's sound metamorphosed into a more lo-fi, garage-oriented and straight-to-your-face ear candy wrapped with all-Filipino lyrics. In 2006, Yaps Estagle joined Narda for additional synth duties. Jettisoning their sweet retro-pop sound from their previous material, Narda released 'Discotillion' on September 22, 2006. They went full throttle in a new direction, resulting with immediate, punk-influenced and pop-savvy in-your-face songs, armed with buzzy synths, primal guitars, furious drums and Katwo’s distinctive, seductive, and electrifying singing. This record features the singles Molotov and Ang Mitsa. Narda announced their disbandment in 2007. The band cited that "lineup changes and other setbacks, and maybe, with yet another lineup change, it was time to lay Narda to rest." Their last gig was on April 12, a gig they cheekily entitled NARDAmaggedon. HILERA 

YEARS ACTIVE

2004 – present (14 years) MEMBERS o Chris Padilla

Eventhough the band officially started on December 2004, Chris (vox/guitars) and Ivan (bass/vox) have been playing ever since. Having a hard time of finding a permanent drummer, Chris literally forced his brother Bobby to learn how to play drums - made him the youngest member of the band at the age of 15 and finally completed this three-piece band. After they have won the recent Nescafe Soundskool interschool competition, Hilera is now making a buzz in the rock scene. Came from Kalayaan College and besting others from prominent schools like Ateneo and Mapua the band has always been the underdog in this competition (the fact that they were always at the last in the text votes tally) - well it goes to show that rock is not a popularity contest after all. Their music? you've got to listen to it because it's a bit of everything: maybe because of the wide music influences of the members that made this band different, a trully buzz worthy :) BARBIE ALMALBIS 

BORN 26 August 1977 (age 41) Barbie's Almalbis' fame started with the band Hungry Young Poetsand their first hit "Firewoman". Barbie moved on to form Barbie's Cradle with a couple of members from Hungry Young Poets (aka HYP). Their first single, "The Dance", became a hit due to its melancholic and folk sound. The band's popularity further increased after the teen soap opera from ABS-CBN, entitle "Tabing Ilog", used a song of the same from their debut album. Following on their success, they released their sophomore album called "Music from the Buffet Table". ERIK SANTOS 

BORN 10 October 1982 (age 36) Erik RamosSantos, (born October 10, 1982 in Malabon, Philippines) is a Filipino singer and the Grand Champion of the ABS-CBN program Star In A Million Season 1 in January 2004. He is dubbed as the 'Prince of Pop'. Erik's passion for singing started when he was still a kid in Malabon. Erik participated in numerous smalltown singing competitions. Erik became the wildcard entry to the Final 10 of Star in a Million. He had a good start in the contest but got eliminated during the third week of competitions, when it was still a part of the Sunday noontime variety show ASAP. Nevertheless, his second chance came and his rendition of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly", won him the 10th and final slot for the semi-finals round. Eventually he became one of the three grand finalists in the showdown for the title of Star in a Million. "This is the Moment", a song from the musical Jekyll and Hyde, popularized by Martin Nievera, won him the title. Now, with record-breaking chart-toppers from his Platinum debut album (his first single Pagbigyang Muli has stayed on the #1 spot of WRR's hit chart for more than 20 weeks, along with his other songs filling up the charts simultaneously), sold-out concerts and a demand for corporate shows, accolades from Awit Awards, Star Awards and Aliw Awards, endorsements for a bank (Bank of the Philippine Island's Express Remit), theme songs for radio stations, and even movies, Erik has earned mainstream popularity.

EQUILIBRIO (2011 – present) Equilibrio is a Filipino band consisting of Jun San Miguel (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Ray-an Cenicio (drums, keyboards), Russel Valdez (vocals, bass), Tito Santos (guitars), Bongyo Bautista (saxophones, drums) and Yanicel Francisco (vocals). ______________________________________________ 2. A Swiss band performing Italian Rock. The band was founded in Zurich at the beginning of 2007 by Antonio Guida (lead singer and composer) and Guido Egger (guitar player). Cambio’s initial musical project was based on a few songs that Antonio composed to entertain friends with the guitar. After several auditions Lorenzo Weibel was chosen at the drums, Sal Nurrito to play bass guitar, and Nicola Curciofor a second electric guitar. Cambio started performing live in June 2007, hitting several stages in the Switzerland and Germany, with a good response from the audience. This positive feedback convinced the band to self-produce their first album, published on December 1st, 2007. At the beginning of 2008 Sal and Nicola decide to leave the band, and they are replaced by Michele Cumar at the bass and Luca Valentino playing guitar and keyboards. The new formation became a united group of friends sharing a common passion for music. Euro 2008 football championships held Austria and Switzerland motivated the band to compose Gioco di Testa, a song dedicated to the Italian national team. The initiative received a good response from Swiss and German mass media. Tages-Anzeiger (http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/dyn/news/zuerich/859801.html) and Südkurier (http://www.suedkurier.de/region/blitzmeldungen/hochrhein/waldshuttiengen/art3822,3240176) published articles about Cambio. At the same time DRS3 (one of the most popular Swiss radios: http://www.drs.ch/www/de/drs/10723.oid153005.html) aired Gioco di Testa nationwide, and the song is on the top chart of the swiss music portal mx3 (http://mx3.ch/artist/cambio). Radio Italy, american based online broadcaster, dedicates attention to Cambio by playing the song several times a day during Euro 2008, thrilling the band with a great emotion. The interest expressed by the media helped Cambio to be contacted by the city of Zurich to perform live in the fanzone of Euro 2008 for the delight of hundreds of fans. ______________________________________________ 3. Nievera spent most of his childhood in Hawaii with his father as his father sang for the group Society of Seven. The Nievera family also took up residence in the Bay Area in California for a short time in the late '70s. Martin attended high school in Walnut Creek, California. Inspired by his father's talent and success, Nievera returned to the Philippines in 1982 to begin his own singing career and by June 1982 he released his first LP, Martin…Take One, with the album reaching platinum in just five months. Nievera began co-hosting the TV variety show Penthouse Live! with Pops Fernandez, the Philippines' "Concert Queen," who would later become his wife. Nievera's second LP, 1984's The Best Gift, also reached platinum. In 1987, Penthouse Live! was changed to Martin and Pops Twogether, in celebration of their marriage. After his marriage to Fernandez, with whom he has two sons, Ram and Robin, failed in 1998, he wrote and recorded music for the sole purpose of winning her back, which he called Forever. Even though he did not succeed, the music ended up in the hands of the public and rose to become a best-selling music collection. The two sequels, Forever Forever and Return to Forever are also about the split. Both of these albums hit platinum sales as well. In 2001, he plagiarized "We Just Don't Know How To Say Goodbye" by Diane Warren and included it as "To Say Goodbye" in his "My Souvenirs" album compilation, which was later pulled out of the market for copyright violation lawsuit. As an actor, Nievera has an extensive acting career and has appeared or starred in eleven movies and seven television series and specials. In August 2009, Martin Nievera has a concert together with Gary Valenciano for the first time in "As 1". They also both have a new album in one collaboration album. On September 2009, Nievera suffered Dehydration after his concert on September 19, and his best friend, Gary Valenciano worried about his buddy's condition. The following day, Martin was discharged from the Hospital.

SMOKEY MOUNTAIN 

YEARS ACTIVE 1989 – 1995 (6 years) Smokey Mountain was a Filipino singing group formed by musical director, composer, and conductor Ryan Cayabyab. The original group was based in Manila, Philippines, and had James Coronel, Geneva Cruz, Jeffrey Hidalgo, and Tony Lambino as its members. They were often dressed in ragged clothes to depict the then dire situation of the scavengers living in the garbage dump in Manila after which the group was named. In 1989, the group released its first self-titled pop album that consisted of songs revolving around social, environmental, and patriotic themes. The group's first hit, Kailan (When), was number one on national airwaves for eight straight weeks and the album hit gold, platinum, and double-platinum status within months of its release. In late 1990, the group went on the "Better World" tour, performing at the United Nations World Summit for Children and representing the Philippines at the 5th ASEAN Song Festival in Surabaya, Indonesia. As the members aged, Lambino, Cruz, and Hidalgo would leave the group. Ryan Cayabyab would reform the group with its last remaining original member Coronel and three new members Zhar Santos, Chedi Vergara, and Jayson Anganan. It is from this batch that the group's most successful hits were spawned: Da Coconut Nut (about the benefits of the coconut plant), Paraiso (literally paradise; ironically, about a degrading environment filled with garbage and smog), and their own version of Kailan. They also won awards for both Paraiso and Tayo Na (Let's Go). In around 1993, Coronel would leave the group. The remnants of the latest batch disbanded sometime later. Cruz would later on move full time into showbiz, with Lambino having stints in musical theatre and broadcast news and later, graduate studies in the United States as a Fulbright Scholar. Hidalgo would go into songwriting and Coronel into managing a Manila-based call center. Santos would audition in the fourth edition of the reality show American Idol under the name Sharon Galvez, but was shut out of the semi-finals. Vergara would also cut a solo album of her own with some success. SHIELA AND THE INSECTS Sheila and The Insects is an Indie Rock band from Cebu City, Philippines. YEARS ACTIVE 2004 – present (15 years) PEDICAB is composed of Mike Dizon (drums), Raimund Marasigan (keyboard synths), Jason Caballa (guitar), Diego Mapa (lead vocals), and acclaimed music video director RA Rivera (visuals and multimedia). The band was formed out of each band member's desire to play catchy danceable punk rock, (humorously referred by the band as dunk music, dance-punk). Their use of vintage analog synthesizers instead of the traditional bass guitar, as well as Diego's quirky vocal style and eclectic lyrics, has given Pedicab a unique sound, redolent of 80s synth-pop with garage rock flavor. While the band's seasoned lineup may be reason enough to attract curious listeners, Pedicab has managed to build a loyal following with their infectious original tunes and energetic live performances. RA's visuals give Pedicab's live shows a distinctive performance-art edge. Pedicab's first album, dubbed "Tugish Takish" (the sound of the two-count drumbeat when imitated by human vocals) boasts of impressively slick production, as evidenced by the hook-laden first single 'Dizzy Boy', and arrangements employing a minimal-as-maximal approach, leaving a lot of space to dance to. More impressive is the way the band adds that Pinoy rock flavor as evidenced by the nifty guitar lines and lyrical hooks, please direct your attention to tracks such as 'Dito Tayo sa Dilim', 'Ang Kailangan', 'Bukas', 'Konti na Lang'. Madaling Sakyan indeed! SILENT SANCTUARY 

YEARS ACTIVE 2001 – present (18 years) A rock band with violins and a cello. Most people have shown mixed reactions to this mixture; some are amazed, some are doubtful, some are just plain interested. Truly, the sight of these classical instruments side-by-side with electric guitars is not really common. However, the truth is, this group of young individuals is just like any other band - they are set in making good music and sharing it to others. This is Silent Sanctuary. The band has been around the local music scene for quite sometime now. Though their kind of music has evolved through the years due to a couple of evolutions to their line-up, they are still able to maintain a certain sound that is very Silent Sanctuary. Armed with catchy guitar riffs and heart-pounding melodies from the violins, the band has invaded numerous bars, schools, and other performance venues with the passion to share their music. Everett True said that, "It's fucking sweet, dry, and incisive as all hell, blistering and right-on without all of that extraneous shit!" SITTI 

BORN 29 November 1984 (age 34)  BORN IN Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines Sitti Navarro is a local Pinay who's just in her tender twenties, with more than ten years of singing expertise to back her up. Sitti, whose name means princess in the Muslim dialect, is truly worthy of her bossa babe title. Lithe, smart and pretty, Sitti was weaned onto song in the usual Pinoy manner: Goaded by relatives, she'd sing a couple of Whitney Houston torchers at family gatherings. The former corps commander would also join singing contests and was very active in the school choir. After graduating from high school in 2001, her neighbor, pianist and accompanist Romy San Mateo, scouted the young business economics major out, and asked if she wanted to sing at the Stonehouse jazz bar. She has also landed gigs at other lounge spots, such as Kalesa Bar and the Richmond and Makati Shangri-la Hotels, besides hosting events and touring island destinations in the Philippines in Studio23's The Travel Show. Sitti was made to sing bossa nova. Her relaxed singing style and soothing voice lingers above the complex harmonies of the jazz and samba influenced Brazilian genre, effortlessly gelling lyric and music together. Sitti's eyes light up when she talks about music, especially bossa. In 2004, Sitti got another big break, this time as a recording artist for Warner Music Philippines. After hearing a few demos from Sitti, the major label decided to cut her a solo record. In 2005, Sitti found herself recording her debut album, Cafe Bossa. "I want people in my age bracket to be aware about jazz and bossa nova, and that there's more to music besides the standard pop and R&B," shares Sitti. New converts and long time bossa fans

alike will not be disappointed by Sitti's debut offering. Cafe Bossa is indeed a cup of chill in 18 choice tracks. It's a must-hear album of laid-back tunes done in the warm sounds of OPM's bossa babe. LEA SALONGA 

YEARS ACTIVE 1977 – 1990 (13 years) There is more than one artist with this name: 1) ASIN is a Pinoy folk and folk rock band from the Philippines. After fronting rock and roll bands during her teens, Lolita Carbon met Cesar "Saro" Bañares Jr., Mike Pillora Jr., and Pendong Aban Jr. in Kola House, a folk rock club, and then decided to form their own musical group, naming it Salt of the Earth. They had signed a major record label and renamed their band to Asin after a record producer was searching for a "female" Freddie Aguilar, taking advantage of the Filipino folk rock boom during the late 1970s. Their eponymous 1978 debut album includes a cover of Freddie Aguilar's "Anak" and the rest are all original works. Some of their popular songs include the environmental song "Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran," "Ang Bayan Kong Sinilangan," "Pagbabalik," and "Balita." According to Pendong Aban Jr. who grew up in Agusan del Norte, most of their songs were based on the experiences in Mindanao. Because of too much illegal logging and violence in their homeland, they wrote lyrics that hoped for peace and a better environment in Mindanao. They sometimes use kulintang and other traditional instruments of the southern Philippines to give their music a more indigenous spirit. In 1993, Saro Bañares Jr. was murdered in a bar brawl in Cotabato, causing the group's members to part ways. Aban had his band Ang Grupong Pendong, while Carbon went solo. Later in 2000, they decided to reunite but Pillora backed out later, although Pillora gave his blessings to the new album that Carbon and Aban would release. The record album Pag-ibig, Pagbabago, Pagpapatuloy, the first Asin album after 12 years, features unreleased materials of the late Bañares. 2) Asin is an hard techno/schranz artist from Tokyo,Japan. With a rough upbringing, Asin's musical preferences instinctively went to a hard direction. Although he got into music through hip hop, his solo endeavor digging for harder sounds brought him to schranz, a style developed in Germany, so far from his home Tokyo. The 20 year old talent continues to stoically concentrate in his production and performs in the Far East underground scene. SESSION ROAD Session Road is a band named after "Session Road," the commmercial center of Baguio City (Philippines). Following the success of the band’s album ‘Suntok sa buwan’, sessiOnroad releases their 3rd album ‘Bakit hindi?’ The group formed sometime in 1999 and in due course established themselves a highly regarded live band from all over the country. Armed with a musical odyssey from playing an extensive gig circuit, sessiOnroad delivers an album genuinely collaborated and composed, such that it features song writing from all its five members. ‘Bakit hindi?’ the recording reflects the band’s current tone in their respective personal lives, and presents

their music in a series of gritty and catchy sequences ranging from pop songs to obscure poetry readings. The songs are uplifting, relaxed and upbeat, giving praise and humility to their current triumph, or the lack there of. The album was written shortly after 2005 and was recorded quite swiftly as offered by their prevailing label Alpha Music Corporation. Although much could be addressed on how the songs are recorded, the band ultimately decided on keeping the tracks simple, sincere and straightforward. Each song has its identity as members overtly assert in coming up with materials and ideas that contemplates what’s instinctive in their nature. sessiOnroad extends to a deliberate identity where music is played with a bittersweet spirit, yet embracing enough to speak of truth, sprinkling it with a vibrant insight on our everyday life. Folded, unfolding, moody and invariably surprising, sessiOnroad’s music takes yet another turn to the basic dilemmas of life. Imperfection seems all the more important since it leads to creation… and music conveyed with a passion that is worth life in itself is the direct result of the album’s contents. From trivial sounds to blush worthy lines, sessiOnroad remains true to their calling. The sound is intangible, but truly hearing it beyond its hurts and smiles is a spiritual communion… something that eternally shifts and changes and why not? - In good faith, that’s what we all live for. SHERYN REGIS (1982 – present) Sheryn Regis (born Sheryn Mae Poncardas Regis in November 26, 1979) is a Filipina pop singer, composer, host and actress. BROWNMAN REVIVAL 

 

YEARS ACTIVE 1994 – present (24 years) FOUNDED IN Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines MEMBERS o Dino Concepcion

Perhaps one of the most enduring and familiar legacies to come out of the Caribbean shores would be that sensational dance-rhythm phenomenon born in the late 60’s, accented with a delirious and bewildering backbeat known as reggae. Armed with cool, soothing melodies and infectious grooves, reggae music chose to celebrate life, love and dance, amidst heated surroundings of ferment and crisis. It shouldn’t be hard to imagine then why nearly 180° degrees around the equator and thirty years later, on an isle quite similar to Jamaica, several young lads aimlessly floating in the doldrums of urban campus life caught on to the reggae fever and formed BROWNMAN REVIVAL. Started in late 1994, the band re-captures the original groove and spirit of the reggae vibe - when reggae appealed more to the heart and the hips, infusing it with pop undertones that strike a familiar chord with Filipino “aural palates”, not to mention their pelvic areas. BROWNMAN REVIVAL is made up of the one-drop rocksteady beats of drummer Dennis, the sensual grooves of Jao on bass, the sexy accents from percussionist Januarie, the steady “chanka” rhythms of Alphy on guitars, the wicked horn riffs of Jayson on trombone, Jojo on sax, Ambet on trumpet, capped-off by the passionate wailing of frontman Dino.

Drawing heavily on contemporary reggae acts such as Big Mountain and UB40, BROWNMAN REVIVAL creatively mixes the traditional roots sound of venerated reggae icon Bob Marley, with an OPM sensibility producing a festive but sensuous strain of Lover’s Rock reggae with such vibrant energy that never fails to leave the crowds winding and grinding their sweaty bodies to the band’s euphoric reggae party CHICOSCI  

YEARS ACTIVE 1997 – present (22 years) MEMBERS o MIGGY CHAVEZ (1996 – present)

Chicosci is a 5 piece rock band based in Manila. The band is composed of vocalist Miguel Chavez, bassist Carlos Calderon, drummer Jose Salvador, and guitarists Sonny Baquisal and Mong Alcaraz. They were first named Chico Science in homage to the Brazilian musician of that name. They later shortened this to Chicosci in order to avoid confusion with the Brazilian artist. Chicosci's biggest mainstream hit is "Paris" from their sophomore effort "Method of Breathing". "Paris" stands as the only song to hold the number one spot on Manila rock station NU 107's Midnight Countdown for a lengthy period of time. "Shallow Graves" from the third release, "Icarus", peaked highest at number 7. Now armed with their latest album, "Chicosci", the band garnered another number one hit with "A Promise". Chicosci regularly plays the Manila music circuit as well as the relative provincial gigs. YENG CONSTANTINO 

They were inspired by stacks of old children’s records, lost tales and limericks, and old folk songs. Their first studio recording was the album Strangely Paired, released independently in 2005 and rereleased by Terno Recordings in 2006. Outerhope’s second album, A Day for the Absent, was independently released in October 2009. DAYDREAM CYCLE Philippines, the year 2000: What started out as toying with a drum machine and an electric guitar soon turned into a fusion of un-categorically beautiful music. With Kathy Meneses on vocals, Japs Sergio and Jerome Velasco on guitars, and Dok Sergio on bass, Daydream Cycle has formed a unique fusion, one that sends your soul into mystic abstraction. The songs have a diverse melodic reverie with intermittent distorted guitars that vary from steady to upbeat, and dreamy to lively. OGIE ALCASID (1967 – present) Philippine singer/actor/composer/comedian. Currently hosting and acting shows on the country's GMA-7 channel.

SOUND There are several groups or musical projects under the name "Sound". A number of the songs present in the charts are by "The Sound", a 1970s-80s English post-punk band, and this is an incorrect tag for this group.

First usage of this name is credited to a duo of Eric Lumbleau (of Vas Deferens Organization) and Joel Zoch. They specialize in creating torrentially layered post-industrial, pan-ethnic psychedelic audio collages that resemble the avantgarde. They have released two albums, "Drunk On Sound" (1999), and "Screaming Zenith" (2002). – The Filipino band: Something new, yet distinctly familiar. The name connotes an open mind, sophistication, and ambition. An endless list of influences range from the Beatles to Corduroy, Jamiroquai to Stevie Wonder, from Steely Dan to Jazzanova, whose colors find their way into the sonic palette. Guided by a cool head for business, the work is as fevered and passionate as a band enjoying full creative control: practical, but radical. Independent, yet pop. Since the launch of bossaManila, their first full-length effort in April 2003, Sound's line-up underwent several changes. Liquid Jane's Chad Rialp had taken over bass duties for Yuson—who took a break from the band to pursue his medical studies—while Fajardo left the group towards the end of that year for other pursuits. Early 2004 saw the incorporation of newcomer Malek Lopez of Rubber Inc fame to fill the void that Fajardo left behind. Sound's current following to date is attributed to their incendiary live act. Playing Manila's most noted music venues, such as 70s Bistro and Peligro, their set features a lush array of originals and interpretations; from Corduroy's January Woman to Gil Scott-Heron's Lady Day and John Coltrane, the Apo Hiking Society's ’Di Na Natuto to the Pinball Theme from Sesame Street. The band is currently working towards the completion of their sophomore effort, Blue Monsoon, slated for release in 2006. RAZORBACK  

BORN 31 August 1986 (age 32)  BORN IN Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines Rachelle Ann Go (born August 31, 1986) is a Filipina singer and Bench model. She rose to prominence after winning Search For A Star, hosted by fellow Filipina recording artist Regine Velasquez. Rachelle was born in Manila, Philippines . Called Shin or Shin-Shin by her friends, Rachelle's interest in singing started at a very young age. Her father predicted even before she turned a year old that she was destined to be a Star. When she turned seven, she underwent vocal training and lessons and, by the time she was nine, she participated in her very first amateur singing competition and won the first prize, belting out Jennifer Holliday's "And I Am Telling You," in spite of being the youngest contender. She joined and won several contests. Her television debut on "Eat Bulaga!," a hit noon-time variety show, happened when she was just eleven. She competed in the show's contest "Birit Baby" where young aspirants belt out vocally challenging songs. She ended up receiving the runner-up award singing Céline Dion's version of "All By Myself". In 2003, Rachelle auditioned for a talent search show on television, Search for a Star. Rachelle passed the auditions and made it as one of the twelve finalists. On March 13, 2004 Rachelle was announced as the grand champion singing her rendition of Mariah Carey's "Through the Rain". Several weeks from winning, she collaborated with Philippine rap group Salbakuta for a cover of the Laura Branigan 1980s hit Gloria; she then released it as a CD single and became an instant hit. Rachelle performed the song with the group in the Malacanang Palace, alluding President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. In July 2004, Rachelle released her self-titled debut album with the singles "Love Of My Life" and a remake of "Don't Cry Out Loud". It also includes her own cover version of Selena's "Dreaming of You". She was then part of the Night Of The Champions U.S. Tour opposite Sarah Geronimo and Erik Santos.

She then released a duet with Christian Bautista entitled "You And Me (We Wanted It All)". She is also a talent of VIVA Entertainment Group and is part of ABS-CBN, The Kapamilya Network'. She was involved in variety shows such as ASAP and ASAP Fanatic. During November 2004, Rachelle represented the Philippines in the Shanghai Music Festival where she was a silver medalist for her rendition of a Vehnee Saturno-penned song, "From The Start," which won Best Song followed by an astonishing breakthrough in the 2004 Astana Song Festival as she took an award as silver awardee and for the Best Own Country Song for her version of the song, "Isang Lahi." In 2005, she was named the Best Promising Female Singer by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation, a prestigious award giving body recognizing the year's best. On April 29, 2005, she earned top-billing on her very first major solo concert hailed as Rachelle Ann Go, The Ultimate Champion. Rachelle delivered an exceptional performance and the concert has received massive accolades and rave reviews. It was Rachelle's breakaway feat from just being part of the Champions Circle. In here she instituted her mark as a solo recording and performing artist. One of the most notable points of the show was Rachelle's take on Regine Velasquez's R2K Concert airborne act, where she was suspended in mid-air as she opened her show. Later that summer Rachelle reunited with her fellow champions for what was to be their last ensemble concert performance to date. The show entitled Pinoy Idols: Return Of The Champions is a series of shows in the United States. The two-month tour featured Rachelle with contemporaries Sarah Geronimo, Christian Bautista, Mark Bautista, Frenchie Dy and other winners of reality singing competitions. On November 2005, Rachelle released her second album I Care under VIVA Records. At the same time, she hosted the second season of the reality show Search For The Star In A million alongside her fellow champs Erik Santos, Sheryn Regis, and Mark Bautista. The album reached Gold status selling 15,000 copies nationwide. She recently released her third album entitled "Obsession" with her label, VIVA Records. Rachelle is also set to perform in a Valentine’s show with singer, Christian Bautista in February 2007 at the Aliw Theater entitled You & Me. In late 2005, Rachelle was rumored to fellow champion Christian Bautista. The romantic balladeer courted her for almost 2 years. They finally became lovers on February 2006. But unfortunately their relationship lasted only for 1 year and 8 months because on November 2007 both of them decided to be "quits" due to the lack of time of togetherness and personality differences. The two remained as "FRIENDS". VOCAL CAPABILITIES Rachelle Ann Go is known for her exquisite belting ability and her powerful control of her whistle register. YEARS ACTIVE 2011 – present (7 years) There are now at least two artists in this page. 1) François Luambo Makiadi (6 July 1938 - 12 October 1989) was a major figure in twentieth century Congolese music, and african music in general. He widely referred to as Franco Luambo or, simply, Franco. Known for his mastery of rumba and its later incarnation of soukous, he was nicknamed the “Sorcerer of the Guitar” for his seemingly effortlessly fluid playing. As a founder of the seminal group OK JAZZ, he is counted as one of the originators of the modern Congolese sound. 2) Franco is a Filipino rock supergroup with members from different Filipino bands. The lineup consists of Franco Reyes (of Inyo) on vocals, Gabby Alipe (of Urbandub) on guitar, Paolo “8” Toleran (of Queso) on guitar, Buwi Meneses (of Parokya ni Edgar) on bass guitar, and JanJan Mendoza (of Urbandub) on drums. 3) FRANCO is a ukrainian rock band. YEARS ACTIVE 1999 – present (20 years) MEMBERS o Acel Bisa (1999 – 2004) o Maysh Baay (1999 – present)

Bondoc is the oldest member of the all male group, Sabado Boys. He is famous for his song "Let me be the one"

CHILLITEES Uela Basco - vocals Dan Gil - guitars Ryan Armamento - flute + vocals Gino Cruz - vintage keys Jon Jon Jose - bass Jon Padilla - guitars Tim De Ramos - drums Paolo Lim - drums The group started as a songwriting collaboration between Dan Gil and Ryan Armamento in 2001. Uela Basco joined on vocals in 2002 (she was just 17 then). In 2004 Gino Cruz (Kulay, Take One) and Jon Jose (Murder of Crows, Helen) were recruited to play Vintage Keys and Bass respectively. In 2005 the Chillitees brought in Jon Padilla (Forgetting Luna) on guitar. The group also made the move from beat box to live drums: Paolo Lim (Sound) filled in for Tim de Ramos (who migrated to the USA). HUNGRY YOUNG POETS

Hungry Young Poets (aka HYP) is founded in the Philippines as a duo in 1997 by Barbie Almalbis (guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter) and Ricci Gurango (bassist). After releasing their one selftitled album, Franklin Benitez (drummer) would officially complete the trio. In 1998, Gurango left the band to lead cover band, Little Green Men,, before forming MOJOFLY. With Gurango's assertion of rights to the band's name, Almalbis and Benitez would later rename the group, Barbie's Cradle. NIKKI GIL Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines (1987 – present) Nikki Gil is a Filipina actress, singer and video jock. YEARS ACTIVE 2002 – present (17 years) MEMBERS o Lee Maningas (2002 – 2008) o Monty Macalino

The band chose its name in honor of the song "Mayonaise" by Smashing Pumpkins. Monty is the hefty frontman of the band and is definitely a large person so Mayonnaise does get recognized and remembered because of this not-quite-tiny detail. But after the fact lies what the audience take home with them after watching Mayonnaise perform - guitar-driven tunes with ultra-catchy hooks and compelling lyrics. Radio listeners seem to agree, as airplay of their first single The Only Thing, and the current, Eddie Song, are steadily rising. And the songs are what the band attributes to winning 2004's Red Horse Muziklaban. The current line-up is actually the third, as member changes had been inevitable in the band's history. Some of the songs have been around that long, but in different versions. The songs change with each change in the line-up, as each new member brings their own input and flavor to the song. The original Bakit was written in 1999, back when there were only three members in the band and Monty was, he jokes, fifty pounds lighter. Then they made an acoustic number of bakit, which didn't sit well with Monty, who missed the rockier version. Hence, Bakit Part One and Bakit Part Two. The Part Two is a new song all together, while Bakit Part One is the new version of the original. From the emotional depth of the songs, you would think that Monty is either very depressed or a serious guy with a giant chip on his shoulder. It will then surprise you that Monty is quite the comedian, cracking jokes every five minutes, especially when you least expect it. Monty kids around as easy as breathing, sending his bandmates, and anyone else within earshot, into constant hysterical laughter. It's a bit difficult to reconcile the charming joker with the pained and angry guy singing his guts out on The Only Thing or Bakit.

Of the songs in the album, the most lighthearted would be the current single, Eddie Song, which Monty claims was written as a tribute to his driver, who, after two years in employment, has become one of Monty's closest confidantes and gives some of the best advice ever. When Monty is upset, he doesn't dwell; he writes. And when the creativity kicks in, he can write a lot in such a short time. Monty writes about his experiences, mostly about love. Around 75% is about love. Mostly unhappy love songs. Like Jopay is about the sex bomb dancer, but not really. It's about a really bad fight with a girl Monty once loved and felt really messed up. Jopay was the first person he saw on TV and he thought, how great to be her. Jopay doesn't even sound like he was feeling down and brokenhearted and can be mistaken for a charming and witty song with a spot-on Pinoy pop culture reference. JOSE MARI CHAN 

BORN 3 August 1972 (age 46) Lani Misalucha (born August 3, 1969 in Manila, Philippines) is a singer from the Philippines currently performing in the United States where she also resides. She holds shows at the Flamingo Las Vegas with the veteran Hawaiian variety troupe Society of Seven - SOS. Dubbed Asia's Nightingale, (declared by MTV Asia) she performs pop, rock, jazz, soul, rhythm and blues, and operatic arias. Misalucha's depth (vocal strength held in reserve) and wide range have been frequently compared to those of popular divas such as Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. However, her powerful but agile voice characterized by "runs and leaps" with high upper extension is closer to the artistry of multi-media superstar Barbra Streisand. Misalucha's voice usually starts soft and thin, then gradually thickens as it approaches the peaks of a song. Although technically labelled as 'lyric coloratura', Misalucha has many times ventured into the territory of 'dramatic coloratura' with her rendition of Giacomo Puccini's "Nessun Dorma," a feat that has earned her much praise as well as unwanted comparisons to Italian operatic tenors and sopranos. Misalucha possesses a comedic flair and can effectively impersonate the super-divas as well as Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, Toni Braxton, Gloria Gaynor, Donna Summer, Minnie Riperton, Beyonce Knowles, Shania Twain, and Britney Spears. Since arriving in Las Vegas in 2004, Misalucha has been called "New Siren of the Strip." In March 2008, Misalucha was voted "Best Singer" (staff pick) in the "27th Annual Best of Las Vegas" poll conducted on 8,000 respondents by the Las Vegas Review Journal. This put her in the same sentence as super-diva Celine Dion, the readers' pick for "Best Singer". P.O.T.  

YEARS ACTIVE 1996 – 2005 (9 years) MEMBERS o Karl Roy

1.) Filipino Funk/Jazz/Rock Band. 2.)P.O.T. arrived on the limping alternative music scene of Manila, Philippines, with the sound and fury of a fireball – and then just as quickly burned out. The funky rock band was formed by Karl Roy (vocals), Ian Umali (guitar), Mally Paraguya (bass), and a musical-chairs roster of drummers in Manila in 1995. Roy was originally the lead singer of new wave veterans Advent Call in the first half of the '90s. P.O.T. enabled him to unleash his eclectic influences, shaping the group's high-energy mix of soul, rock, and acid jazz. The band debuted at the Music Museum, opening for the heavy metal combo Razorback. It was the beginning of a brief but explosive career, one that had them relentlessly gigging and flooring crowds with powerful live performances. On November 18, 1996, the group was signed to PolyEast Records and immediately began recording its debut album. The self-titled CD was released in May 1997, and P.O.T. helped to resuscitate and bring creativity back to Philippine rock, which was losing the commercial impact it had in the early '90s. P.O.T.

was among the headliners at the Puerto Azul Music Festival, and it seemed like the band was on its way to becoming hugely successful, winning numerous trophies from various award-giving bodies and receiving mass radio airplay in its home country. However, Roy was diagnosed with an infected heart valve, requiring him to undergo surgery, which put the group on a short hiatus. Umali later resigned from the band, reportedly wanting to further his education. P.O.T. later broke up. Roy then formed Kapatid with bassist Nathan Azarcon, guitarist Chico Molina, and drummer J-hoon Balbuena. Their eponymous first album came out in 2003. GREYHOUNDZ 

YEARS ACTIVE 1997 – present (22 years) MEMBERS o Gobas o Reg Rubio (1997 – present)

Greyhoundz was formed in '97 by the avenido cousins just wanting to join a local battle of the bands contest. the contest was cancelled so they opted to audition at the now defunct club dredd. they later recruited reg, who was from another band then that also played at club dredd.since then they've recorded 2 full length albums with sony music philippines and have played in clubs, underground gigs, special events and in almost all of the major cities in the Philippines. KARL RAMIREZ As one writer pointed out, Karl Ramirez writes music with “fresh optimism and truthful empathy … breathing fresh air into the progressive music tradition.” A collaboration of rock, pop, and electronic, his music ventures into new ways of articulating people’s issues, collective and social action. His latest single “Pagbabago para sa Karaniwang Tao” (Change for the common person) is a catchy tune about the Filipino’s aspiration for real change, not just for a few but for the many “karaniwang tao”. A music video was released with the help of Loujaye Sonido and Richelle Rosales of Munting Media, and featuring Pol Torrente, Jay Jamoralin and Peter Panelo of the band Plagpul, and Peter Magat, a percussionist from Ciudad Tribu. “Pagbabago” airs in couple of radio stations and the music video has already aired in the MYX music channel. Teddy Casino, a three term Congressman and one of the country’s leading progressive legislators, took notice of “Pagbabago” and its message of change for the common folk which he himself is advocating for in his bid for the Senate. Soon enough, he adopted the song as his campaign anthem. Most of his releases are available for free at his Reverb Nation musician profile. In 2010 his song “Convergence” won the grand prize in Net-25’s Rock the Beat songwriting competition. In the same year he was also selected as a participant in the first Elements National Songwriting Camp organized by Ryan Cayabyab and the 7101 Music Nation. In 2011, “Makibaka” a CD compillation of past releases, was self-produced as a way of giving thanks to all supporters, music collaborators and friends. Karl Ramirez is a human rights advocate, a member of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines and the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. From demolition of communities to advocating

politics of change, his involvement in social issues and cause-oriented organizations influence his songwriting. He believes that musicians should take sides. As national artist Lino Brocka describes it, artists "does not work in isolation from society … he is a citizen of the slums, of the streets, of the battlefield if need be. The artist is always a participant." Ramirez believes in writing meaningful music that inspires the heart and soul, and conscious in moving people to do good and effect change. CHEESE Cheese is a seven-piece Rock Band from Quezon City, Philippines. Ian Tayao on vocals, 8 Toleran and Enzo Ruidera on guitar, CJ Olaguera on percussions, 2ts Calinawan on bass, Robert dela Cruz on drums and Biboy Garcia on turntables. They fuse together sounds from different genres like metal and reggae. They are also known for their tempo changes in between songs. Due to contractual disputes with their label, however, they have since switched their name to queso.
