Julie Eckenrode April 14, 2009 Multiculturalism Diversity is present everywhere: schools, work spaces, and out in public. It is important to be informed on the issue of making sure every community and environment is a healthy diverse one. In the article, “Multicultural Seminar: A New Model for Professional Development” by Elizabeth Denevi and Randolph Carter talks about the importance of creating this healthy diverse community in the school between employees, students, and parents. It is stated in the article, “A school is multicultural when each child and adult who walks through the door feels welcome, safe, and included in the school community. Equality and social justice are goals of a commitment to diversity and multiculturalism.” Multiculturalism is said in the article that it can’t simply be added on to a curriculum because you lose the engagement and interest both for yourself, the teacher and for the students. The best way to effectively teach students of multiculturalism is to explore the educational theories of it, which go into more detail throughout the article. The most important information to remember however is, you must have gained trust and a sense of understanding between the students and yourself. Multiculturalism and diversity is a very sensitive topic throughout schools and from this article going over the seminar for a discussion on the topic and how to make schools a welcome, safe, and included school you can follow their steps to it. It is always important that your students can trust you and have some bit of connection with you to make school a learning place. This article has definitely gotten my attention and I may as well want to go to a seminar similar to this one. Denevi, Elizabeth, and Randolph Carter.
