Theme  Theme- is what the author is trying to

convey or in other word the central ideas of the story  how many themes: short stories often have just one theme Novels normally have multiple themes

Theme Example Example: If a story is about betrayal then the theme would be you can not betray people and expect people not to betray you  It can not be just betrayal because that is a topic and theme has to be more than one word  Example: a man went to the store and stole a bag of chip because he wanted to sell them. A couple of days later the police came to the man house and took him to jail for stealing. The theme of the story would be crime doesn’t pay. The reason it is the theme is because that is what the message of the story is. 

Story Settings

Setting The setting is the time and place in which

the events occur. Types of Settings: Physical- is where the story is taking place . Chronological -is when the story is taking place.

You can start your story by thinking about the setting. Where does your story take place? What time of day is it?

What is the weather like?

Is it inside Or outside?

Chronological Setting 

Example: In 2009 President Obama was elected president this chronological setting because it tells when something is happening

Preposition 

A preposition is a part of speech that shows a relationship between two things. • Location (on, under, in) • Timing (before, after, during) • Direction (from, toward, to)

What can prepositions tell you? It may tell you where a thing is in relation to something else.  The juicy, red apple was on the book. 

 It

may tell you when something is in relation to another event.  She refused to leave the house until the postman had been.

What else can prepositions tell you? A

preposition may tell you the position of something in relation to something else.  The gentle, brown dog slept beside the fluffy white rabbit.

 It

may also tell you the direction something is travelling in relation to something else.  The gallant horseman was riding along the windy shoreline.

Compound Prepositions A compound preposition consists of a combination of words that is often considered as one preposition and connects the object of a preposition to another word or set of words. Examples according to in regard to apart from by means of
