Effect of music on milk production )and feed intake in )dairy cattle

Presented by: Mohammad mayyas Supervisor: proff. rami kiridli Faculty : agriculture Department : animal production

2

Many people like music especially calm music, because it gives them emotion, memory evokes, good mood, reducing .……… pain, relaxation, and so on This is in regard to humans , but what about dairy cattle

3

Effect of music on milk production and feed intake in dairy cattle Many studies and researches about the effect of music on milk production in cows ,state that music has a positive effect on milk production in cows

4

A study in India, showed that Indian classical music was played 10 min before and was continued until the completion of evening milking ,it was shown that overall milk production % increased by 12.64

5

Another study carried out at LSAH dairies in humberside strong 1000 Friesian cattle herd were exposed to fast ,slow and no music for 12 hs a day ,the researchers found that each cow’s milk yield rose by 3% a day when slow music ,rather than fast music ,was played 6

The results of the study were as : follows Slow music =24.0995 lit /cow/day No music =23.8907 lit/cow/day Fast music =23.3666 lit/cow/day 7

.............. This is the effect

But ?

Why

andhow 8

? Why Researches show that because the music give animals emotion ,relaxation and reducing the stress, ……… that enhance the release of

oxytocin 9

So , the secrete is oxytocin Is a mammalian hormone that also acts as neurotransmitter in the brain Nonapeptide(composed of 9 amino (acids role: social recognition, anxiety, trust .,maternal behaviors Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly 10

? How oxytocin works

12

Oxytocin is synthesized in hypothalamic neurons and transported down axon of the posterior pituitary for secretion into blood 13

Hypothalamic Control of Posterior Pituitary (ADH) (Oxy)

14

Oxytocin secretion

15

Then go by arterial blood to small sacs(alveoli) that found within the mammary gland Mammary alveoli are surrounded by smooth muscle (myoepithelial) cells

16

17

Myoepithelial cells which are . prominent target cell for oxytocin Oxytocin stimulates contraction of myoepithelial cells ,causing milk to be ejected into the ducts and cisterns and released outside the udder through teats

Releases milk into duct system

Myoepithelial cell relaxes 30

31

Now , how does music affect on ? milk production Look ! While the music increase milk production by enhancing release of oxytocin ,logically, the animal needs more feed (dry matter) intake as a response for higher milk production 32

Relationship between milk production and feed intake

33

Take home message Music give relaxation to cows that induces milk production Oxytocin has the major role in milk letdown As the milk production increased ,then feed intake also increased until a certain limit 34

fin all y Thank you so much
