The Filter Technician has expertise in constructing and installing filters. Often, the Filter Technician is also a Micro Entrepreneur who runs his/her own business. This module explains the role of the Filter Technician and the activities that he/she undertakes.

Intro to Being a Filter Technician (FT) Role of a Filter Technician The filter technician is responsible for constructing and installing BioSand filters. He/she is the expert on production techniques. The FT will also be the first contact to teach the householder how to use and maintain the filter. Business skills will be required as he must run his small business and market the filters. Expected Participants Physical labourer with; a desire to start his/her own business, work ethic, initiative to try new things, and desire to help the needy with an opportunity for clean water. Would be an asset to have; concrete skills (cement mason, brick layer), already a small business owner, marketing skills, problem solving skills, social entrepreneur (capitalist with a conscience). Course Goals The participants will gain a clear understanding of how the BioSand filter works, how to construct and install the filter, and run all aspects of a small business involved in selling the filter. Learning Objectives Upon completing the filter technician course, the participants will be able to: • Describe how and why the filter works, its advantages and limitations • Identify other water treating technologies and their advantages and limitations • Assemble and prepare the required tools • Explain the components of the steel mold and assemble it in preparation for use • Construct the filter, prepare the sand and install the filter using appropriate quality control steps • Teach other workers how to build the filter, prepare the sand and install the filter • Teach the filter users how the filter works and how to use and maintain it

Demonstrate business skills such as identity preparation, production planning, production costs, selling price, keeping track of money in/out, business planning, communication skills with customers, funding sources, marketing to promote/sell the filter, obtaining and paying back loans to expand the business Form and manage a filter technician association or cooperative with other technicians Communicate with the trainer, community stewards and program organizer

Media preparation Filter installation How it is used correctly What the filter user should know How to maintain the filter What happens if the filter isn’t working correctly Running a Business Identity Planning for production How much does it cost? What is the selling price? Keeping track of money Money in Money out Funding for new equipment

Filter Production A filter technician must consider and plan for all the details listed below. Starting a Business Small business skills are also very important to a filter technician’s success. This is mostly new material (some examples of which are appended to this section) – we recommend keeping this material at a simple level and very specific to a FT. Business Plan (importance of, how to make one, samples) Financing – Initial Capital, Ongoing costs, (donations, loans, subsidies) Production (how to make your products effectively, optimization, growing Accounting Accounts Payable – paying suppliers, subcontracts, employees, family members, paying you Accounts Receivable - setting your prices, collecting money, providing credit Employees – do you need them, family members, how to hire, how to manage Marketing Getting customers (one at a time, NGO’s, communities Promoting yourself Promoting the product Printed material – (we provide examples) Community Market Day / Trade shows Local Media – radio, newspaper, TV Special Promotions – schools, community centers Filter Technician Cooperative or Association (need for one, how to form one, sample meeting agenda, topics to address) Alternate products (Building molds for others, water containers, water dispensers, bleach, latrines, Tippy Taps, wash basin stands, soap,)
