MODAL VERBS DEFINATION The verbs can, could, may, might, would, should, must, ought are called modal verbs or modals. They are used before ordinary verbs and express meanings such as permission, possibility, certainty and necessity. Need and dare can sometimes be used like modal verbs.

HAVE TO Formula: Subject + Have/Has to + BFV + Object. For Example: Students have to study in exams. He has to win the match. Negative: Subject + Does/do not + Have to + BFV + O For Example: My mother does not have to cook daily. They don’t have to go to office. Interrogative: Does/do + Subject + Have to + BFV + Object For Example: Do we have to work ? Does she have to read book ?

HAD TO (past) Formula: Subject + Had to + BFV + Object. For Example: I had to be there by five o’clock. He had to move the furniture himself. Negative: Subject + Did not + Have to + BFV + O For Example: My mother did not have to cook daily. They did not have to go to office. Interrogative: Did + Subject + Have to + BFV + Object For Example: Did we have to work ? Did she have to read book ?

WILL HAVE TO (future) Formula: Subject + WILL HAVE TO+ BFV + Object. For Example: He will have to come to university regularly. Negative: Subject + WILL + NOT + HAVE TO + BFV + O For Example: He will not have to learn his lesson. .Interrogative: Will+ Subject + have to + BFV + Object For Example: Will they have to play cricket?

CAN (possibility) Formula: Subject + CAN+ BFV + Object. For Example: I can swim across the river. Negative: Subject + CAN + NOT + BFV + O For Example: He can not do this sum. .Interrogative: Can + Subject + BFV + Object For Example: Can you lift the box ?

COULD (past) Formula: Subject + COULD+ BFV + Object. For Example: I could swim across the river. Negative: Subject + could + NOT + BFV + O For Example: He could not do this sum. .Interrogative: Could + Subject + BFV + Object For Example: Could you lift the box ?

MAY (Doubt) Formula: Subject + MAY+ BFV + Object. For Example: I may swim across the river. Negative: Subject + may + NOT + BFV + O For Example: He may not do this sum. .Interrogative: May+ Subject + BFV + Object For Example: May he come there?

MIGHT (past) Formula: Subject + MIGHT+ BFV + Object. For Example: I might swim across the river. Negative: Subject + might + NOT + BFV + O For Example: He might not do this sum. .Interrogative: Might+ Subject + BFV + Object For Example: Might they come that day ?

SHOULD Formula: Subject + SHOULD + BFV + Object. For Example: I should swim across the river. Negative: Subject + should + NOT + BFV + O For Example: He should not do this sum. .Interrogative: Should + Subject + BFV + Object For Example: Should they come ?

WOULD ( less possibility) Formula: Subject + WOULD + BFV + Object. For Example: I WOULD swim across the river. Negative: Subject + WOULD + NOT + BFV + O For Example: He WOULD not do this sum. .Interrogative: WOULD + Subject + BFV + Object For Example: WOULD they come ?

MUST (necessity) Formula: Subject + MUST + BFV + Object. For Example: I MUST swim across the river. Negative: Subject + MUST + NOT + BFV + O For Example: He MUST not do this sum. Interrogative: MUST + Subject + BFV + Object For Example: MUST they come ?

OUGHT TO Formula: Subject + OUGHT TO+ BFV + Object. For Example: I OUGHT TO recite the holy Quran in Ramadan. Negative: Subject + OUGHT + NOT + TO + BFV + O For Example: He OUGHT not TO do this sum.

USED TO Formula: Subject + USED TO+ BFV + Object. For Example: He used to live here. Negative: Subject + USED+ NOT + TO + BFV + O For Example: They used not to listen to music.

DARE Formula: Subject + DARE + NOT +BFV + Object. For Example: He DARE not say this in my face. Interrogative: How+ Dare+ Subject + BFV + O For Example: How dare you contradict me ?
