Ministry Discovery: Introduction

1. Objectives of the Study This study is designed to: - Equip the body of the Christ in fulfilling its mission: “for we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10 NIV). - Empower the disciples of Jesus to “be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:12-13 NIV)

2. Introduction Do not be surprised if you feel like you have already seen these thoughts in other books or studies. Most of what is written in this study is a blended application based on the Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren and Cure for the Common Life by Max Lucado. These thoughts come from God and belong to the Lord anyway. As the apostles of Jesus said: “Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking.” 2 Peter 3:1 “Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that…” Jude 1:5 To God be the glory!

THE MOSES PRINCIPLE PRINCIPLE 1: UNDERSTANDING MOSES’CALL & HIS LIFE “Belief is something you can argue about, conviction is something you can die for.” (qtd. in Purpose Driven Church, by Rick Warren) When God calls you for service, He believes in you more than you do in yourselves. The reason is simple. God shaped you for that purpose; He gave you spiritual gifts, knowledge, abilities, experience, and many other skills for a special work. Let’s understand together the life of one of his servant: Moses. We will then understand how to apply this life changing principle. “By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter.” Hebrews 11:24 1. MOSES WAS SHAPED TO LOVE HIS PEOPLE Moses knew that:  His mother (and father) hid him because of their love for him, knowing that they could have been killed for it. Exodus 2:2-3  His mother had to give him up because he was too old to be hidden Exodus 2:3  His parents had to give him up despite their love for him. Exodus 2:10  Pharaoh’s daughter took him as her son while his people were being mistreated. How could you love someone who takes you by force from your parents and want to love you as a mother? Exodus 1:8-11  Would you want to be called son of Pharaoh if you knew that “your people” who are innocent are mistreated? Exodus 1:8-11 God puts you in circumstances in life to shape your perspective and develop specific convictions in your heart. In fact, the bible says that God determines the time and the precise place were we would live. Acts 17: 26 2. MOSES WAS SHAPED TO LOVE JUSTICE  Moses killed an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew slave, “one of his own people.” Exodus 2:11-12  Moses was a mediator and a peacemaker; in Exodus 2:13 he knew the matter before trying to reconcile. The bible said”… He asked the one in the wrong…”  Moses carried his thirst for justice even while he was in exile, escaping for his life, by rescuing the daughters of a Midian priest. Exodus 2:16-17 3. MOSES WAS SHAPED TO LEAD A NATION  Egypt was probably one of the greatest empires in the world!  Moses was also close in line to become Pharaoh. The bible says that Moses “refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter” Hebrews 11:24  He certainly had the training and education necessary to become a good king one day, the leader of a nation: “Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.” Acts 7:22

4. MOSES WAS SHAPED TO LIVE IN THE DESERT  Now living in Pharaoh’s palace allowed the prince to be instructed and enabled him to run a nation with the infrastructures of Egypt. However, how could he lead a nation in the desert unless he himself had the ability to live in that kind of environment, which at that time was unfamiliar to him? “When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well.” Exodus 2:15 “Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.” Exodus 3:1 

After killing the Egyptian, Moses lived in the desert with his wife and father-in-law, he learned how to live humbly, attending a flock, and understanding how the sheep rely on their shepherd. After living for 40 years in the desert, Moses was surely adapted to lead God’s people in the wilderness.

THE MOSES PRINCIPLES PRINCIPLE 2: REDISCOVERING MY PAST & MY CALL God places you in a family and puts a desire in your heart to serve Him. 1. WHAT IS YOUR CALL? HOW DID GOD SHAPE YOU? Moses went in exile to Midian for almost 40 years: was God just waiting for the right time to call him for his Duty? God does not give you more than you can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). We can sometimes see Moses as a fearful character but God knew he was the one He made for that unique mission because it was the Lord’s plan. “The Lord of hosts has sworn, saying, Surely, as I have thought and planned, so shall it come to pass, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand.” Isaiah 14:24 (Amplified Bible) Now that you have a better understanding of the reason why God chose Moses, let’s talk about YOUR CALL, YOUR SHAPE, YOUR MINISTRY. Personalize these scriptures: Like Moses, The Lord my God:  Knows me since my birth Psalm 139:13  Sets me apart Jeremiah 1:5  Prepared me for good works Ephesians 2:10 As he met God, Moses’ “Call” was already clear but he had to learn to trust God. God will give you strength and will build up your faith as you converse with Him  God helped Moses by using his staff as an instrument to perform miraculous sign Exodus 4:1-9  God gave Aaron to Moses as a partner to help him in that journey. Exodus 4:11-17 2. THINKING ABOUT THIS: 1. What are the events that happened in your life good AND bad? 2. What are the biblical answers for each of them? Personalize these scriptures and read them at loud: “My call for MINISTRY” God called me into a ministry (1 Peter 2:9-10).God created me for a ministry (Ephesians 2:10), prepared me for a ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12), saved me for a ministry (2 Timothy 1:9), gifted me for a ministry (1 Peter 4:10). Jesus sent me to minister (Matthew 28:18-20), commanded me to minister (Matthew 20:26-28), He will also reward me for my ministry (Matthew 25:21). My brothers and sisters need me in my ministry (1Corinthians 12:27) I will be held accountable for my ministry (Colossians 3:23-24). Is it really important to know your ministry? Now ask yourself: “What is my ministry?”

2. WHEN GOD POURS OUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is a privilege to have the Spirit of God dwelling in you. When God wants you to accomplish a task in His Name, He gives you His Spirit. God always gives His spirit for a specific reason.  God listed your name on His book, invited you for service “However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the Tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp.” Numbers 11:26  To shepherd his flock “I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you carry the burden of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone.” Numbers 11:17  For artistic work "See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts- to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze” Exodus 31:2-4  To lead His people “So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, [a] and lay your hand on him. Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence.” Numbers 27:18-19  To save His people “But when they cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them. The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, so that he became Israel's judge and went to war.” Judges 3:9-10  To fight for Him “The Spirit of the LORD came upon him in power so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done.” Judges 14:6  To govern His people (king Saul) ”Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah” 1 Samuel 16:13 (Amplified Bible) Now that you have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you after repenting to God and believing in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior: - What is your call? - Why did God give you His Spirit?

This study will show you how God puts you in different situations to prepare you for a ministry. “This third I will bring into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, 'They are my people,' and they will say, 'The LORD is our God.' ” Zechariah 13:9

1. God gave you a spiritual gift when you were baptized in Jesus’ name and received the Holy Spirit.

2. God gave you a unique passion for particular activities, something you would do everyday even without being paid. 3. God gave you one or several abilities that you had built up since your birth. 4. God gave you a specific personality for His purpose: either you are an outgoing person or a laidback person, someone who enjoys routine or loves changes. 5. God put you in different situations in life to give you a particular experience and wisdom in some areas. Now it is your turn to rediscover your life and see how God will use it for His glory. Write down all your activities, passions, victories, past experiences, even the most hurtful ones. Then you will have understanding like Joseph did when he said: “And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.” Genesis 45:5 As it was said in the introduction of this study, this is a blended application based on the Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren and Cure for the Common Life by Max Lucado. It is very simple. If you carefully follow the instructions, which are illustrated with examples, you will get the most out of it. Like pharmacists often write on their medicines: “for best results: follow the instructions” Why is it important to write down? “Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered…” Exodus 17:14 “Then the LORD replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.” Habakkuk 2:2 “Moses recorded their starting places, as the Lord commanded, stage by stage; and these are their journeying stages from their starting places” Numbers 33:2 (Amplified Bible)

Satan was trying once again (this time through the crowd) to make Jesus loose His focus just as Satan did in the desert when he wanted to make him king of the world (Matthew 4:8-11). When he (Jesus) came back from His retreat, He reaffirmed to the crowd that His purpose was: “38For I have come down from heaven not to do My own will and purpose but to do the will and purpose of Him Who sent Me.39And this is the will of Him Who sent Me, that I should not lose any of all that He has given Me, but that I should give new life and raise [them all] up at the last day.” John 6:38-39 (Amplified Bible)

Serving God with the right heart   

When you serve using your God-given gifts, remember that it is God first that you are serving; therefore God should be your starting point. Joshua 5:13-15 (see v. 14) (NIV) Samuel understood that by ministering to the Israelite community, he was personally accountable to God. 1 Samuel 12:18-25 (see v.23) (NIV) You will be rewarded for faithfully using your talents Matthew 25:20-28(NIV) o Whether you do something on your own (v. 21) o Or by making yourself available to help someone in accomplishing a godly task (v.27)

There are usually 2 categories of people in our society: 1. The ones, who are natural-born leaders and who, with a vision, create an organization (for profit or not for profit). In the kingdom of God, these are the kind who could use their abilities to create a project, set a God’s given vision that will involve many individuals. That would be the case of the bankers who use someone’s deposit to produce wealth Matthew 25:27(NIV) 2. The ones who would rather help those who have a vision. These people can usually be found working for organization without having the hassle of governing it. That would be the people who put their money in deposit to the bankers so the latter would produce something profitable out of it. Matthew 25:27(NIV) 

Jesus would rather suffer to serve God than to follow His own desires. 27 "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say?’Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." John 12:27-28 (NIV)

Therefore, make yourself available to fulfill God’s will for your life and make an impact around you. The bible says: “4No soldier when in service gets entangled in the enterprises of [civilian] life; his aim is to satisfy and please the one who enlisted him.” 2 Timothy 2:3-4 (Amplified Bible) Therefore, use your S.H.A.P.E. to serve God.

Exploring The Ministry: DISCOVERING YOUR NICHE

The goal of this internal exploration was to help you discover what you can use to serve God through His Church. It does not mean that everything you do will be perfect. “But Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" And God said, "I will be with you…” Exodus 3:11:12 (NIV) God will be with you, Jesus will be with you. That is what His name means anyway Immanuel = God with us {Ref. www.cc.columbia.edu/cu/cup/} Actually, God is aware that you need Him to accomplish His purpose and for this reason, He gives you His Spirit. That is why Jesus said: 18

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."[e] Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)
