Mindful bodies: * get the students to move their chairs back from their desks and face forward toward the board Ask them to let their bodies get very still Ask them what the noise is like in the room when they get still. Have them sit with mindful bodies with eyes closed for 1 min. Ask them if it was easy or hard. Mindful listening Tell them there are lots of things to be mindful of but today we are going to be mindful of sound *Bring out the singing bowl Ask them if they’d like to hear what the bowl sounds like. Tell them they have to get their mindful bodies on Make sure they are as still and as quiet as they are capable of. *Ring bowl Body
Learning activity or sequence of activities. )
Time:
Tell them you are going to ring it again but they have to get their mindful ears on (which means they listen carefully) Tell them to pay attention to the sound of the bell and to raise their hands when the sound is gone for them *Ring bowl Tell them that this time they are going to listen for the bell with their eyes closed and raise their hand when the sound is gone for them. Explain that we can listen this carefully to any sound Have them put their mindful bodies on and listen quietly for sounds around the room *Mindful listening for 1 min Ask them if they would like to share any sounds that they heard Tell them that they have just learned how to pay attention better and in mindfulness we learn how to focus and pay close attention to many things. Ask them if they think it’s important to be able to focus. Why? When would you use mindful listening?

Closure
Ask them if we can try this again on the days that I’m there. Tell them that now they have learned mindful listening to try to remember to listen to the sounds around them. Tell them to listen to sounds while they are on the playground, in the halls, in the classroom and at home.
Time: *Ring bell 2 min
