INDUSTRY LAYOFFS Ladish Co., Inc. Cudahy, WI Ladish Co. will lay off about 70 production workers at its Cudahy factory. The maker of forged and cast-metal parts for the jet engine, aerospace and general industrial markets has seen demand erode with the recession. Wayne E. Larsen, vice president for law and finance, said Friday that Ladish has already taken other steps, including a one-week furlough without pay for everyone, earlier this year. - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel The Boeing Company Chicago, IL Huntsville, AL Boeing in Huntsville has announced it will lay off up to 130 employees in September. The layoffs will be in Boeing's Ground-Based Mid-course Defense program, formerly known as National Missile Defense. The company said it will cut about 250 people nationwide. - The Associated Press State & Local Wire U.S. Department of Defense Washington, DC Tacoma, WA The Pentagon has decided to cut 98 positions in a Pierce County-based Washington Air National Guard unit, which is responsible in part for highly classified cybersecurity missions to protect the nation's computer networks from terrorists and other attackers. The Air National Guard's annual budget calls for the positions at the 194th Regional Support Wing to be eliminated by October 1. Most of the unit is based at Camp Murray, south of Tacoma. The targeted jobs include the wing's command structure, training, recruiting, retention and equipment positions. The wing's 15 subordinate units' responsibilities include cybersecurity missions, intelligence, joint terminal attack control and combat communications. - The News Tribune
TRENDS Teaching Jobs For Veterans - Article from Military Times Edge Magazine The federal Troops to Teachers program has suffered in recent years because of a 2005 rule change that sharply reduced the number of schools in which a vet hired under the program could teach. That trend could be reversed if new legislation is adopted to restore the original criteria, expanding the number of eligible schools. Participants in Troops to Teachers are given a $5,000 stipend to help them get teaching certification in exchange for three years of service in a “high-need” school,
originally defined as any school receiving grants under Title I of the education act. In 2002, the Troops to Teachers program was included in the No Child Left Behind Act and came under the budget of the Education Department. In 2005, the department defined “high need” as any school where 20 percent of the students come from poor families or where 50 percent participate in the subsidized-lunch program. The number of Troops to Teachers hires nationally fell from 754 in 2007 to 465 in 2008. Under the proposal, Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Calif., said more than 3,600 additional schools in her state alone would be eligible for Troops to Teachers.
