GRADUATE SCHOOL MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION (MAED) _________________________________________________________________________ MIDTER EXAMINATION IN EDUC. 201 (SET C) 1. What is the role of the teacher and students according to the Existentialists? Existentialism is a philosophy concerned with finding self and the meaning of life through free will, choice, and personal responsibility (AllAboutPhilosophy.org). The belief is that people are searching to find out who and what they are throughout life as they make choices based on their experiences, beliefs, and outlook. In existentialism, individual has to take full responsibility for their own actions and shape their own destiny. An existentialist teacher helps students understand and appreciate themselves as a unique individual by taking their thoughts, feelings and actions. His/her way of teaching should allow students freedom of choice and provide them with experiences that will help them find the meaning of their lives. Example of this is through the application of Differentiated Instruction in which we consider individual differences or diversity in their unique needs on how to learn. On the other hand, the ultimate role or part of the students in an existentialist type of classroom is self-expression. The role of the student is to determine their own values and identity. Freedom, choice, and responsibility formed the philosophy of students who exercise existentialism. Involving students in planning of activities and school local celebrations are manifestations that the philosophy of existentialism exists. 2. Give the importance of learning experiences in teaching-learning process. Curriculum can be defined as the total guided learning experiences designed to facilitate learners learning for establishing quality relationship between what is learnt and what operates outside the school (retrieved from: www.igi-global.com). It is then understood that everything we plan and implemented is considered an experience for the students to learn. Learning experiences guide students towards engagement in content and help them learn new skills. Providing students with learning experiences allows them to create relevant, engaging and memorable educational experiences that successfully address the specific challenges of these adult learners (Frey, 2015). This is true because as we engage students to activities, we are improving their concentration and ability to stay on-task in the classroom. Learning experience enables them to simulate real-life situations that learners have encountered or will encounter, providing timely feedback on the decisions they make. This creates a high level of engagement, relevancy and information retention. Most importantly, engaging the students in learning
opportunities provides avenue for them to build daily practice in the classroom which is ideally crafted to have them earn to conquer the real world. 3. Why Zakkir Hussain is considered a humanist? Humanism is a philosophy in which human interests, values and dignity predominate. It has an ultimate faith in humankind, believing that human beings possess the power or potentiality of solving their own problems, through reliance primarily upon reason and scientific method applied with courage and vision. From the statement, I can say that Zakkir Hussain is considered as a humanist not on his term as president but on his faith to change something for the best. Zakir Hussain lent valuable support to start a parallel educational institution to quality schools since his own institution was marked by derisive comments. The humanist didn’t gave up on his desire and belief that something could be change and improved. Hussain worked to emerged Jamia Millia Islamia, the National Muslim institution. His being humanist is made clear in his ways as he was offered government jobs for higher compensation but decided to refuse the offer believing that he could done something more on the things he has been putting effort into. This approach is in contrast with that of many people who are prepared to cross the floor and do anything for the sake of money and power. Greatly, he has done something beautiful without even expecting for return. His work efforts are set not unto what he could be receiving after all but on the belief of human nature and importance. 4. What is integral education? Mention three (3) out of the eight (8) functions of it. Integral Education, as envisioned by the Mother and Sri Aurobindo, regards the child as a growing soul and helps him to bring out all that is best, most powerful, most innate and living in his nature. It helps the child develop all facets of his personality and awaken his latent possibilities. One of the functions of integral education is developing morality. In this aspect, the concept considers three essential factors for the moral development of a child like emotions, impressions or habits and nature. I believe that morality should be an integral part in education considering our present time to be wrapped of out-of-control habits and incidents, and to these grounds, morality as part of education ensure that youngsters of today know what's right from wrong, imbibe good ethics and decision-making skills. In addition, another valuable function is the development of senses. These gifts should be utilized to the fullest. Learning only happens when sense are involved. Thus, training of students senses can be equate on training them how to think and learn. Last function is Harmony of the individual and collectivity. This is perhaps the most important function of integral education. It upholds the value of mutual respect inorder to live in harmony despite differences. The idea can be exemplifies on the inclusive education where the right to education goes beyond race, color and alike diversity. 5. What remarkable aspect in Essentialism that you want to integrate in the present educational system? Why?
Essentialism basically accentuate the importance of teaching and inculcating the most essential skills. It is also a theory that states that, children should learn the traditional basic subjects and these should be learned thoroughly and rigorously such as reading, writing and ‘rithmetic. Given the idea above, for me the most remarkable aspect of essentialism that I want to be exercised in our present education is the thorough and rigorous early education. One of the features of k-12 program is its spiral progression where in topics or subject matters are taught in a hierarchical level of difficulty. The very idea of essentialism would really serve this purpose where we cannot teach students with complex skills unless they have been first mastered the basic.

GRADUATE SCHOOL MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION (MAED) _________________________________________________________________________ FINAL EXAMINATION IN EDUC. 201 (SET C) 1. Discuss Human Rights Education. What salient features in it that must be given utmost regard? Why? Human rights education is a mechanism in increasing awareness and knowledge on right to education as a fundamental tool to mobilize this advocacy. In this concept, education is valued to encompass values such as peace, non-discrimination, equality, justice, non-violence, tolerance and respect for human dignity. One of its salient point that is embracive for me is the belief that human rights are universal, that they are applied equally and without discrimination to all people. This should be the thing that our society needs to inculcate from time to time. It is important to understand that human rights is universal to avoid discrimination in any context. Universality entails acceptance regardless of the distinguished differences seen. It is a feature that as human beings with uniform, innate and equal rights, we can live a world unharmed with disparity. That we can achieved unity in diversity. 2. Are our schools ready for Multi-cultural education? Why? Why Not? Schools for me are on the perfection of implementing multi-cultural education. In DepEd, I believe that the department is indeed sensitive to the needs of multicultural education duly manifested in its thrusts and programs implemented. MADRASA, ALIVE and MTB-MLE could be the very apparent works of the Department of Edcation towards the attainment of this multi-cultural education. Our present shift to k-12 curriculum is a move that sets our education quality and products to be globally competitive. The advent of ASEAN integration has paved ways also to adopt the essence of multi-cultural education by being globally aware. Schools today are on the heights of preparing all students to work actively toward structural equality in organizations and institutions by providing the knowledge, dispositions, and skills for the redistribution of power and income among diverse groups. Thus, we can observed that school curriculum is directly addressing issues of racism, sexism, classism, linguicism, ageism, heterosexism, religious intolerance, and xenophobia.
3. How can quality of education in your school be assessed and enhanced effectively? Suggest something. Quality education can be said to be a universal aim of every institution that promotes learning. That is why it is always ideal to continuously look for opportunities to improve something. For me, things become hardened as we get to use to it from day to day. Likewise, getting used to usual planning, implementing, teaching and activities collaborated within the school sometimes made us not think outside the box thinking that what we are practicing is really sufficient to quality education. Hence, it is desirable for any institution to pursue accreditation to improve the processes of the school. School evaluation on its management can be a great tool also to assess how far the school is upholding quality education commensurate to the mandate. Faculty fieldtrips and benchmarking could be a convenient way also to benchmark best practices in the field of institutionalizing quality education. 4. Can autonomy in higher education bring quality to its graduates? Why? Autonomy basically means freedom to all people who are responsible for the execution of the job itself. In the context of tertiary education, autonomy can be defined as freedom to manage academic, administrative and financial aspect of the institution. Giving autonomy is termed also as decentralization. As specific example, School-based management in secondary schools suits this idea since it gives the school the freedom to exercise utilization of its financial dimension and administrative functions. For me, autonomy bestowed to higher education is probably the best decision. It is somehow saying that the people managing the institutions know what is best for its clientele thus ensuring that career offerings for example is responsive to the needs of the community where the school is located. The school administrative body is aware of the characteristics of a certain community thus may respond efficiently to what career offerings will the learners will pursue that at some point is in demand in his/her very place. For example, a higher institution whose cultural background lies on its bountiful beaches and rivers may offer marine-related career options; any SUC whose work culture looms on agriculture should precisely include courses related to it. In a nutshell, autonomy is advantageous to certain school to run precisely a responsive institution to the needs of the people it serves.
