INTRO DUC TI ON :
Methane gas is prepared in the laboratory by heating soda lime with Sodium acetate. The ratio of the two mixtures is 1:3
REACTI ON SH OWING PREPERATI ON OF METH ANE GAS CH3COONa + NaOH CaO, SODIUM ACETATE SODIUM HYDROXIDE + SODA LIME
CH4( ) + Na2CO3 METHANE
SODIUM CARBONATE
Ma teria l used: 1. sodium acetate 2.Soda lime 3. water APPARATUS USED 5. Burner 6. Wooden Block 7. Test tube 8. Stand 9. Cork 10. Tub 11. Delivery tube 12. Cylinder
PRE PERAT IO N:
ILLUS TRAT IO N:- Sodium acetate and soda lime mix in equal ratio and put this mixture in a test tube.Heat it gently. After heating the test tube methane gas evolved and collected in a cylinder in a form of gas as shown in the figure.
• Methane gas is colourless, odourless and tastless. • This gas is lighter than air • It does not dissolves in water but soluble in ether, alcohol.acetone and carbon tetra chloride. • It shows GREEN HOUSE EFFECT.
US ES OF METH ANE GAS 1.Methane gas is used in houses as fuels. 2. Methane is used for the formation of carbon black & hydrogen which is used for the tyresand hydrogen is used for the formation of ammonium manure. 3. It is used also in automobiles. 4.Biogas and coal gas is prepared from methane and used for fuel.
