INTRO DUC TI ON :

 Methane gas is prepared in the laboratory by heating soda lime with Sodium acetate. The ratio of the two mixtures is 1:3

PRE PERAT IO N:

ILLUS TRAT IO N:-  Sodium acetate and soda lime mix in equal ratio and put this mixture in a test tube.Heat it gently.After heating the test tube methane gas evolved and collected in a cylinder in a form of gas as shown in the figure.

• Methane gas is colourless, odourless and tastless. • This gas is lighter than air • It does not dissolves in water but soluble in ether, alcohol.acetone and carbon tetra chloride. • It shows GREEN HOUSE EFFECT.

US ES OF METH ANE GAS  1.Methane gas is used in houses as fuels.  2. Methane is used for the formation of carbon black & hydrogen which is used for the tyresand hydrogen is used for the formation of ammonium manure.  3. It is used also in automobiles.  4.Biogas and coal gas is prepared from methane and used for fuel.
