Meeting Minutes Date: April 16th 1. Introductions We met two more members today: Ashley and Jamie :D Get to know everyone! We need to know what everyone is responsible for/what they are doing for free communication 2. Timeline May 1st ‐Start at 10 am in HSC 2525, this is in the upstairs lab, middle classroom ‐bring your student ID! ‐This day will be like orientation, we are going to go over the divisions, what we are doing over the first 2 weeks, etc. ‐bring your ideas, plans (make copies to give to everyone), think of these things before hand! This includes plans for fundraising (eg. bakesale) May 8th ‐iGEM kickoff! ‐We will be getting a presentation from Alberta Ingenuity May 15th ‐iGEM business plan is due ‐This will be our FOCUS over the first 2 weeks! Business Plan ‐We have to explain how we do outreach, marketing ‐describe team goals (specific objectives) ‐describe team resources, etc. ‐have a financial plan (budget, item description, how we fundraise) EVERYONE MUST CONTRIBUTE (it has to be the most awesome/best business plan :D) May 25th ‐Dragon’s Den (@ AIF, Edmonton) ‐We only get funding AFTER this! June 6th (and 5th afternoon/evening) ‐Campus Fair ‐We can’t do the painting crafts idea due to costs and time ‐The activities we will be doing are a pipette competition (at 1 pm?) and build your own bacteria (biobot) ‐We have 2 tables outside the Stor and we will try to get posters ‐We have prizes from Alberta ingenuity and brains from BHSC that we can assemble as gift bags, maybe make a special one for the winner ‐There is lunch provided, free bbq, and a draw for volunteers REMEMBER: Throughout the summer, take pics, write/record things! This year, there is the iGEM and Alberta WIKI COMPETITIONS (Content is important!)
3. Club Status ‐SU is not having any more meetings, so we cannot get sanctioned until September ‐For now, throughout the summer, we can make sure the petition is signed and get the constitution ready ‐Questions and Inquiries can go to Justin Brown 4. TED Talk – Bonnie Bassler ‐We watched a cool video on Quorum sensing. You can get the TED Talk podcast on ITunes for some awesome talks like this (on creative, innovative ideas) ‐Discovering bacteria’s amazing communication system ‐bacterial quorum sensing can be used to control pathogenecity 5. Last Year’s Project: ‐We looked at last year’s project TAKE HOME MESSAGE: “We want to engineer group activity. Think of applications of this and how we can market it.” So for next meeting, maybe think of what kind of tasks are useful to perform as a group (herd effect) Next Meeting: Friday May 1st, 10 AM!
