Professor Andy Stark
Director of the MBA programme “Students come to Manchester because they want to engage with practice, while studying; in other words, the Manchester Method. We provide the academic disciplines, but we also set up projects that require them to put these disciplines together - to work in groups, to solve problems, and to deal with real-world situations. This means that students can step outside of their past backgrounds as they are forced to work together and work out how to learn from each other.”

Our students choose the Manchester MBA for a host of reasons: the opportunity to change career direction, to study in a great city, or to push themselves to new levels of achievement. The experiences this brings stay with them throughout their careers.
“Before I started the MBA my aim was to broaden my knowledge, learn more about the financial side of things, move into a different career stream and get a good job to give me a step change in my career. I have succeeded in changing my career to investment banking and I’ve already been offered a job in New York, so I have fulfilled the objectives which I had personally set for myself.” Kapil Lalwani

“The thing that has been an amazing part of the MBA, and in many ways what I will value most, is the opportunity to meet new people, learn from their experiences and allow them to learn from yours, and to make great friendships. You work hard together, you play a bit together, and you’re in it together for 18 months. You may disperse after that, but you’ve got a bunch of new friends that you can visit any time.” Paula Hothersall Nationality: British MBA Class of 2007
“I was involved with the AT Kearney business case study competition - we were runners-up. It was an interesting experience and quite high pressured because we had a week to break down the case and create a presentation of our solutions and recommendations. Once they picked the finalists we had two days to prepare for the final round. Given that I had just started my MBA course I had to push myself, but it really paid off.” Ekene Ogbechie
“I think Manchester has the right balance between the good things you have in big cities and the good things you have in small cities… you have good restaurants, good theatres, good cinemas and, at the same time, because there isn’t that hustle and bustle that we can find in big cities, this is the right environment to study.” Valdemir Oliveira

Professor Gary Davies
Professor of Corporate Reputation “Manchester Business School is about what is coming next: new thinking, new ideas, and solutions to new problems - perhaps things that large corporates don’t even know that they should be addressing. We prepare our students for the sort of problems that they are going to be facing as senior managers in five to ten years.”

Our academics are able to offer expertise in their specialist fields and combine this with practical experience gained from consultancy. This means that what our students learn is at the cutting-edge of what is happening in real-world business.
“The real benefit of the Manchester Method way of learning is that students get to learn about how to handle complexity and how to handle changing requirements from clients. When I was talking to a company a few weeks ago, they said the real benefit of hiring MBA students is the fact that they would probably have worked harder on live projects than they ever would in a company and therefore they really are up and running quickly. ” Professor Peter Naude
Professor of Marketing

“We run the entrepreneurship project, where students prepare a feasibility study using either their own business idea, or one from a client. It runs in conjunction with a principles and practices module, which teaches students about the theory of entrepreneurship, including subjects such as venture capital, writing business plans, market potential and dealing with government grants.” Professor Ray Oakey
Professor of Business Development
“We look at how practical implications can be drawn out so that when student’s graduate they have tools they can use, rather than just ideas and concepts to understand the business they are in. I use simulations, projects and cases to make learning interactive.” Ismail Erturk
Senior Fellow in Banking
“I particularly enjoy being an academic at the Business School because we’re very close to real problems: on the operations side we’re working very closely with organisations who have real operational issues that we can apply tools to - advancing theory, advancing practice and feeding that back into the classroom is very rewarding. ” Dr Nathan Proudlove
Senior Lecturer in Operational Research

The Manchester MBA www.mbs.ac.uk/mba/programme
Our full-time MBA gives you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to challenge yourself fully and discover your true capabilities - helping you to achieve and exceed your personal and career goals.
45% …of our students choose to participate in an international exchange.
2,000 hours Your group will typically spend a collective 2,000 hours on your International Business Project - travelling the world over a 10-week period to meet the challenge.
You will spend at least 30% of your time working on projects - putting theory into practice to bring learning to life. By working in multi-cultural groups you will acquire the real-life experience and team working skills that modern employers look for in their future leaders.
As you progress you’ll be exposed to ever more complex business problems, but you will be supported throughout by our academic staff, who are always on hand to advise, coach and supervise - providing you with the right level of help when you need it.
The Manchester Method The Manchester Method involves four key steps to success: 1 Firstly you will develop your ‘toolkit’ of
broad management knowledge and skills - learning from many of the world’s best business brains, including Manchester’s world-leading academic team, and high achieving business practitioners. 2 You will then put your knowledge into
action to meet real business challenges within a controlled environment working in multi-cultural groups on practice assignments from sponsor companies. 3 Moving from the Diploma to the MBA
stage is all about choice. Extend your knowledge by pursuing specialist electives, with a chance to study at another prestigious international partner school, or pursue your own project or
dissertation. You may also choose to try out a new career and earn money through an internship. 4 Finally, you will test yourself to the limit
with the International Business Project - working with four or five of your fellow students as a consultancy team for a large international organisation. You will bid for new clients and travel the world - expenses paid - to research and complete your project. The choice of project is yours - either bid to win one of the wide choice of projects supplied by Manchester Business School, or source your own if you prefer. This is the highlight of the MBA - drawing together all your skills and experience, and everything you’ve learnt on the programme.
On which MBA can you... take on an international project, have your work circulated among senior management, be flown to the US to present at international board level, and be offered a job on the strength of it? 14

The International Business Project www.mbs.ac.uk/mba/ibp
Most students say this is the highlight of their MBA. You’ll undertake the project in the final stage of the programme. It’s your chance to stretch your potential across international boundaries, and is the culmination of the Manchester Method.
You apply what you’ve learned in the earlier part of the programme: you work with colleagues from different cultures in a pressurised situation - ideal preparation for the international business environment. As a reflection of a real working environment the project involves extensive primary research, international travel and a high level of project management and client contact.
The employment benefits The International Business Project exposes you to unstructured, multi-dimensional international business problems faced by senior managers. You’ll boost your CV by getting involved with new companies and new work areas. You’ll also have more impressive examples to discuss at interview. Recent projects have included market entry strategies, assessing the viability of commercial information services, product support strategies and determining locations for new operations.
You will have the opportunity to work with multi-national organisations as well as smaller companies, typically with staff at board level. AstraZeneca, American Express, Cadbury Schweppes, DHL and Roche are among the companies that have worked with us recently. Our full-time students are sometimes offered jobs as a direct result of their performance on this and other live projects.
The process With your fellow students, you form a small multi-cultural team and consider a list of project briefs from a host of client organisations. Your team then competes against other student groups to secure one of these projects. You will outline to your prospective client how you intend to timetable the project, provide budget estimates and explain why your team is best suited to undertake the work. The client company then makes the decision about which team to appoint. Along with an academic member of staff who acts as your supervisor, you will work closely with the client organisation - effectively as a team of dedicated consultants.
The first client briefing is critical - this is where your team absorbs additional information about the client’s products, its organisational structure and key variables in its industry sector. At this stage, the context, scope and budgetary constraints are formalised. Following your initial research an interim presentation is arranged to assess progress, highlight salient issues and agree on subsequent actions before your team departs for the international stage of the project. At the end of the project you make a final presentation to academics and company representatives and produce a comprehensive final report. Typically you’ll have delivered over 2,000 hours of intensive work for your client. You’ll often present your work to company Presidents or CEOs.
On which MBA can you... enhance your career while having the best time of your life? 16
The Student’s view Oleksiy Tsukanov MBA Class of 2007
“Our client wanted the group to explore profitable market opportunities. As part of the project, I went to Denmark and Finland we’ve collected data and we’ve evaluated market opportunities and researched whether they’re achievable and profitable. I’ve interviewed approximately 15 chief executives so I’ve developed a great deal of confidence in talking to people of different nationalities. You become very good at establishing very clear lines of communication and building a rapport. ”
The Project Director’s view Professor Sydney Howell
Director of the International Business Project “The International Business Project is the third piece of the spine of live work that students deal with during their MBA. The very first thing that students have to do within their project is actually to win their project from the company. We have a group of companies offering a bunch of projects - it’s the company’s choice so the students are making competitive presentations. The students have to bid against each other, it is real and there are problems you wouldn’t get in the classroom. ”
The Project Sponsor’s view Robin Davis Instagroup
“We wanted to explore the potential for exporting into overseas markets. The group applied a series of criteria to the possible markets. We received information about competitors and an analysis of the distribution networks that might be available to us - valuable information that’s allowed us to avoid an expensive foray into a potentially unsuccessful foreign market.” Read more at www.mbs.ac.uk/mba/experience 17

Nightlife and culture
Affordable living
Whether you are single or studying with your family, you will enjoy the rich variety of Manchester life. The city’s cafés, bars, nightclubs, shopping and music scene are a key attraction for some. Others may enjoy the many cultural assets, including opera, ballet, cinema, classical orchestras, theatres, museums and art galleries.
You will find a wide choice of quality, affordable accommodation, including spacious family housing - both in the city centre and in villages surrounding the city. The University provides a choice of 9,200 places to live, or you may prefer to find your own. Excellent public transport links make it easy for you to commute into the city, should you wish to live on the outskirts.
Manchester’s cultural diversity is perhaps best illustrated by its cuisine, with food styles from across the globe, including Rusholme’s famous ‘curry mile’ and the bustling Chinatown. It is said that you can eat for 30 days in Manchester and sample a different style of cuisine each time.
Sport and outdoor pursuits For sports enthusiasts, the city has two premiership football clubs - Manchester United and Manchester City, world-class rugby teams - and an international cricket venue. The 2002 Commonwealth Games left a legacy of impressive sporting facilities, such as the Manchester Aquatics Centre, which is adjacent to Manchester Business School, Britain’s finest Olympic cycle track, and an international athletics arena. Whatever sport you wish to play or watch, you will find it in Manchester. One of the factors that most surprises students is Manchester’s close proximity to stunning countryside. The Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District, Fylde Coast and North Wales are all within an hour or two’s drive.
Family friendly Manchester Business School prides itself on its family friendliness and we do everything in our power to make your partner and children settle in to their new environment. Our Partner’s Club runs events throughout the year and we have a dedicated representative who your partner can go to for advice and support on many issues, such as finding a job, studying, housing, childcare and schooling.
Excellent facilities MBA students have their own dedicated building, which is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As well as first-class academic facilities, the School incorporates a hotel, restaurant, coffee shop and bar. As a student of the University of Manchester you have access to a wider choice of sports, social and library facilities, clubs and societies, and the students’ union.

Important information
Partnership in International Management (PIM)
This brochure is prepared well in advance of the entry dates it relates to and all information is accurate at the time of going to press. However, the MBA is a dynamic programme, constantly changing as a result of new learning innovations, developments in the business world and feedback from students and alumni. The School therefore reserves the right to make variations to its MBA programme in line with its commitment to continuous improvement. When you accept a place at Manchester Business School, you agree to comply with the rules and regulations of The University of Manchester. Those which are most relevant will be communicated to you in the programme materials you receive before, and on, joining the School. If the University makes an offer of a place, it is essential that you are aware of the current terms on which the offer is based. If you are in any doubt, please feel free to ask for confirmation of the precise position for the year in question before you accept the offer. A full listing of the University’s Charter, Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations is available on request or at www.manchester.ac.uk/governance.
Manchester Business School is a member of the Partnership in International Management (PIM) university network, has more than 16 postgraduate partner institutions worldwide and offers about 40 exchange places per year. About 20% of the graduates in International Business and Management have academic experience abroad, and between 40 and 60% of the students on our programmes come from outside the United Kingdom. PIM is an international consortium of business schools founded in 1973. Each member institution represents the highest degree of excellence in the fields of business and management, demonstrates leadership in their geographic region and delivers an MSc, MBA or graduate-equivalent degree in management. PIM facilitates the international exchange of MSc, MBA or masters degree-equivalent students among its member institutions, encourages cooperation among faculty members and researchers, and facilitates the development of joint ventures.
