Ku Klux Klan Nathan Forrest is a former confederate general of founded the Klan is 1866, It started as  a social club for pranksters. After a while the goals became white supremacy and  Democratic control. The KKK act of 1871 outlawed klan activity. It temporarily slowed the  growth of the organization.  “Solid South” The first cause was American interest and the west and Open Hostility in the South, The  return to the Democrats comes by 1873. “Waving the Bloody Shirt” Blamed the democrats for the problems after the war.  Civil Rights Act of 1865 Created temporary harmony by giving African Americans equality in public places and  Transportation. SC rules this act unconstitutional and segregation last to the 1960s.  Compromise of 1877. Grant wanted a 3rd term but didn’t go after it. It becomes Hayes vs Tilden. The demo­ crats win the electoral college.  The republican win the popular vote. Both sides claimed  victory. Back Room Deal 1.Hayes gets the Presidency 2.Federal troops leave the south.  3.The South gets internal improvements. 4.Democrats get the post master general cabinet post. (Most patronage) 5.Garfield becomes speaker of the House. The End.

14th Amendment gives black citizenship. 15th Amendment gives black men right to vote The south moves away from agriculture. They slowly rebuild. Democrats control the re­ gion to the present time.
