Mexico gets independence from Spain in 1821. In 1823 to 1830 American settlers were welcome in Texas. Santa Anna becomes mexican dictator in 1832. He abolishes the mexican congress; he restricts individual freedom. In 1836 texans declared there independence at the Alamo. Santa Anna kills everyone except for one man. At San Degsento Sam Houston defeats Santa Anna winning mexican texas independence. The Lone Star republic is a independent nation. Election of 1844 Clay and Van Buren oppose Texas Annexation. James K Polk was the democratic candidate. His slogan is “54 40’ or Fight”. Polk wins because Clay changes his Texas stance. Polk’s Objectives He wants to lower the Walker Tariff and he wants an independent treasury. He wants 54 ’40 he gets the 49. The accusation of California is one of his main goals. He is responsible for kicking off the California Gold Rush, Texas becomes a state in 1845. It becomes a state because of joint resolution.
