Committee Announcements Legislative Committee The 2009 Iowa Legislative Session ended on Sunday, April 27. Below are the bills and proposals we monitored and worked on throughout the session. A big “Thank You” to Mike Triplett of Hultman Company for his tenacity, especially with all the work we had to do to get a reasonable concession on the plumbing bill. The Legislative Committee spent many hours behind the scenes to assure a positive business atmosphere for our members. We are already putting together a plan of action for 2010. Click any of the underlined links below to read the complete language of the bills and proposals: * The storm shelter bill (HF 705) passed, but it was changed drastically from when we first saw the bill. Essentially, you don't have to build a storm shelter, but if you do, it has to comply with the state building code and the rules coming forth from them. * The plumbing bill (SF 224) passed, and this long and arduous journey ended with a definition of "routine maintenance" that we can live with. Although I didn't like the process, I am OK with the end result. * The private cause of action bill (HF 712) passed, and it included our recommendations about not being subject to suit if you are complying with the law. They took it even further than our recommendations, which is not really a bad thing. * The proposal for a state landlord-tenant board to hear grievances and do other things failed again. * The proposal to give apartment complex owners a tax credit for "green" building did not pass. * The proposal to tweak the property tax structure for certain condo/apartment buildings did not pass. * The proposal to abolish the property tax assessment appeal board did not pass. * The proposal to prohibit us from fining tenants who violate city ordinances did not pass. * The proposal to eliminate employer choice of doctor in work comp cases did not pass.

Vendor Council The Vendor Council is hard at work planning their upcoming events. The Golf Outing is June 12 at Toad Valley, 1:00 shotgun start. This is a great networking event! CIAA and IREM Proudly Present

Our First Joint Event Zap The Gap: Solving the Multi-Generational Puzzle “Us old farts need to keep in touch, not only with our members and employees, but also our customers." The quote above is from an audience member at the Illinois Movers' and Warehousemen's Association after hearing Meagan Johnson present "ZAP THE GAP," How to Solve the Multi-Generational Puzzle." Have you noticed that many of the Generation X'ers and Generation 2000 people don't seem to have the same work ethics and habits as Traditional and Baby Boomer employees? Are they sometimes tougher to manage? You will learn to identify and understand the differences between the generations, retain and develop young star performers, and create a work environment where young people will want to give their best.

Bright Funny Delightfully Obnoxious, Meagan Johnson is known as the “Generational Humorist”. If you think you’ve heard all there is to hear about the four different generations in the workplace, you have not heard Meagan’s comical spin on how to attract, market, manage and communicate with people from every generation without strangling someone in the process. During this session, you’ll laugh while acquiring tools you can use immediately to improve your multi-generational relationships with clients, co-workers and in your every day personal life. While working in a sales environment for various large companies, Meagan became discouraged to hear all the negative comments about generation X and began to research successful ways to work with her younger generation. From that, Zap the Gap was born. In 2003, Meagan received her C.S.P. (certified speaking professional); currently, only ten percent of professional speakers hold this designation. As a Gen Xer, Meagan was extremely proud to be one of the youngest recipients of the CSP designation.
