Language Arts

Social Studies We will wrap up our Mini Society unit this month. Students are currently working on finalizing their business plans and preparing for market. Market is scheduled for May 13th. Students will have an opportunity to spend the money they have earned at our auction which is scheduled for May 15th.

Our current word study theme includes consonant doubling when adding a suffix and syllables.

Our current unit focuses on viewing and drawing 3D shapes. Our next unit will build on what the students have learned about multiplication and division. We will continue to practice this on our DPPs and in review activities. Please focus on practicing addition and subtraction facts if your child has not passed these timed tests. Learning these basic facts will help in later units. Spending time practicing counting money and telling time would also be beneficial! These are lifelong skills that some students struggle with.

Science We are finishing our study of soil and the Earth during the first week of the month. We will be covering a variety of material this month. Time will be spent learning about personal safety. Members of the community will be speaking to us about topics including bike safety, water safety, being home alone, appropriate touch, and personal hygiene. Our speakers are planning to present on May 20th & 21st.

Math

Spelling Our final two spelling tests will be on May 8th and May 15th.

Summer Practice I hope that you have a fun and safe summer! Your children have worked hard and gained a lot of new information this year. Please give your child opportunities to read and practice their math facts over the summer.

Second Grade Visit The second grade classes will be coming to visit West on May 11th. The second graders will be introduced to the building and will also be joining us for lunch. Please call or email me if you have any questions about the content of this newsletter. Thanks!
