We then had a greatweekendin Mattituck, includinga lot of wine tastingat the North Forkvineyardsand the wonderfulcompanywith all my Mastheadfriends.lt remindedme why I lovesailing. But thingschangeda bit on the way home. odyssey had to leavethe cruise earlyon Mondayand didn't followthe rest of the fleetto Shelterlsland. But by the time we were in the middleof the sound, near StratfordShoalsand the only boat as far as I could see,the weatherreporthad turnedto 'dangerousstorms'. lt lookedlike a front was coming,so as a modern Dopplerradar. I saw a sailor, ltuned my Blackberryphoneto Accuweather.com's solidred and yellowwallcomingat me,and I saidto myself,"Self...this isn'ta good thing".ljust aboutpulleddown the sails, turnedon the enginesand got my and 50* knotwindsfor raingearon whenit hit, Tonentialrain, hail, lightening glasses wouldn'tget blownoff so they my to holding on I was 20 minutes. about pointing the wind. The crew of odyssey is packing as I write this, and we are leavingfor Greecethis afternoon. No, we are not sailing there, therebut we will be charteringa boat with somefriendsand sailingthe lonianSea for a week. NaiveMelodyWeathering the Storm Photoswere snappedof manymembersboatsas we remainedin close proximityand afterthat I settledin to waxing the bow railand stanchions, a longoverdue chore. Our passagethroughPlumGut was uneventful with the timingallowingfor most of the boatsto pick up a knot or two overtheir maximumhullspeed. Therewas somefavorable sailingwind as we took our headingtowardsShelterlsland and the lightbreezepersistedfor an houror so. We arrivedat the ShelterlslandYachtClub in time to get settledand havea swim off the boat or a short nao and checkintoa beautifulclub locatedon the shoreof Dering Harbor.Everyone was delightedby the club'ssimpleelegance, wonderfulfacilitiesand terrificlaunchservice. Our "l SurvivedPlumGut" Cocktailpartywas attended by all the cruisersas well as PeytonHarrisonwho joinedus at this port by boat, and Helenewho arrivedby ferryl We enjoyedour casualdinneron the club's deck and returnedto our boatsto rest up for the nextday'sactivities. On Tuesdayeveryonehad a chanceto explore. Some folks went to the NaturePreserveto hike;otherstook the ferryto Greenport. The O'Marrafamilywent bikingto exploreShelterlsland'sbeautifulscenery, and a few folks visited withfriendswho werespendingtheirsummeron Shelter lsland. "MotherNature"treatedus to a nasty, gustydownpour in the mid-afternoon.Fortunately most of us were on board in time to close our hatches! We resurfacedin time for dinnerand then spentthe betterpart of the nightwatching brilliantlightningand listeningto wind and thunderas anotherviolentstormsystempassedthroughwithoutmajor incident.
We gatheredat the club that eveningand were transportedby van to the otherside of the islandto the pridwin Hotelfortheirsummertime tradition, WednesdayNight Barbeque.Theirbuffetwas spectacular,as usual, with lots of freshfish, salads, and ribs, corn on the cob and the usual standbyshamburgersand hot dogs. And of coursebeer! We werejoined by Ken and DebbyCoopersteinwho had come out to Sl for a few daysso we numbered20 and had a fabuloustimeon the upperdeckof the hoteloverlooking PeconicBay and the WednesdayNightSailboatRaces. Someof us were evenseen dancingto the band beforethe vansshowedup to returnus to the yachtclub in time to get the lastlaunch! The onlything bad aboutgoingto Shelterlslandwas that we had to leave! Our departureand exitinto Long lsland Soundwent as plannedand mostof us hoistedsailsas we headedto Westbrookfor the nextpartof our adventure.

So, we joined MCYC and havemet the most incredibly wonderfulpeople. We've participatedin club raft up's and brunches. We felt so welcomedthat ljoined the MCyC board... but, we had yet to go cruising.Beingon the board showedme first handhow muchenergy& effortgoes into planninga successfulclub cruise.Hat's off to Alan pearlman for a fantasticjob puttingtogethersuch an entertainingitineraryin both Port Jeffersonand Mattituck. How can you beat greatfriends, wonderfulfood and mouth-watering libations? The amount of chilies and spices in this recipe are a suggestion. Please use your discretion. You can always add heat but you can't take it away and I make a hot chili.
