How To be a Martian BY

Nichaporn Pemika Wanwarisa

WHY MARS, BUT NOT EARTH? ADVANTAGES OF LIVING ON MARS - Our weight will be lower since the Mars’ gravity is lower. - We might discover new organisms. - Escape from Earth

2

DISADVANTAGES OF LIVING ON EARTH -

Global Warming Overpopulation Waste Disposal Natural Resource Depletion Climate Change Ozone Layer Depletion

MARS Conditions, Environment, Dangers

3

Conditions Atmosphere -

4

CO2: 95.32% N2: 2.7% Ar: 1.6% O2: 0.13% CO: 0.08% minor amounts of: water, NO2, Ne, hydrogen-deute rium-oxygen, Kr and Xe

Temperature Extremely cold - -195 F (-125c) to 70 F (20c) - average: -80 F (-60c)

Environment - Dust storms - Slabs of CO2 ice (dry ice). - Atmosphere is only 1% as thick as Earth’s, sandstorm’s dynamic force as a 10mph wind on Earth.

Environment & Challenges ✘ Low magnetic field

✗ Lethal array from sun

✘ Unbreathable air - 95% carbon dioxide ✘ Extremely cold ✘ Thin atmosphere ✗ UV can easily pass through → skin cancer ✗ Solar flare

✘ Unplantable soil ✘ Lack of ozone layer ✘ Difficulty in getting water 5

Solutions!

Dealing, Preventing, Protecting

6

Magnetic Field ✘ Create artificial magnetic field ✗ Using satellite equipped with technology to produce powerful magnetic field ✗ Locate at MARS L1. ■ Area where gravity from Sun balances gravity of Mars 7

Radiation ✘ Radiation resistant dome ✗ Protect people from UV and radioactive particles

✘ Proper suit is needed when being out of dome area

8

Planting on Mars Removal of Perchlorates in martian soil ✘ ✘

9

Fertilizer Nutritious soil from Earth

Raised zone for nutritious soil Glass dome (greenhouse) → control Artificial lights

✘ ✘ ✘

Toxic to living organism Decompose into chlorine and usable oxygen

Nutritious Soil ✘ ✘

Planting Environment

Water ✘

Vessels run water from storage to planting area

Plant ✘

Synthetic biology ✗ Suitable on Mars ✗ GMO

Robots Observatory

“OPPA”

Digging

“Diggy Diggy Doo”

10

 Constructure

“Pioneer”

CO2 Removal ✘ Carbon dioxide converter ✗ Carbon Dioxide → Usable energy ✗ Energy for robots

11

Oxygen ✘ Canned oxygen supplies ✗ Use in emergency

✘ Oxygen generator machine ✗ Install inside the domes ✗ Provides oxygen for human and plantation

✘ Renew through photosynthesis ✘ Decomposition of Perchlorate ( CL + O2) 12

Wind Turbine ✘ Generate electricity ✗ Wind ✗ Sand Storm

✘ Location: high terrace

13

Solar Cell ✘ Alternative way to generate electricity ✗ Sunlight

✘ 3 layered solar cell ✗ More efficient ✗ Absorb more sunlight

14

Observation & Exploration ✘ Observatory robots ✗ Able to deal with harsh conditions ■ Low oxygen ■ Don’t get tried ■ Radiation ■ Temperature

✘ Water source/ fuel source 15

Finding WATER! Zubrin Method ✘

React CO2 in atmosphere with hydrogen (from Earth)

CO2 + 4H2 ✘

16

CH4 + 2H2O

Not suitable for long term

Soil extraction ✘ ✘ ✘

Extract water from Martian soil 4-20% extracted water 2 methods

1. Compress carbon dioxide in the martian atmosphere, and release it into martian soil. The compressed carbon dioxide gas will react with the water locked inside the soil which will, in turn, release it to be collected.

2. Heat up the martian soil to 500 degree celsius. The water will be released in the form of steams, which can then be condensed, and resulted in desalinated water.

Our Martian Colony! 18

Planning - Steps Creating Mars colony

Steps ✘ First land:

✗ drop three types of robots - Observation robots (Oppa Robot) - Construction robots (Pioneer Robot) - Digging and scavenging robots (Diggy Diggy Doo)

✘ Finish the dome construction process, then begins digging for water ✘ Begins the living quarters construction process 20

Steps ✘ Astronauts, researchers, scientists, and volunteers will be sent to live there. ✘ During the settlement, research on Mars resources will be done, and experiments will be carried out. ✘ Piping system will be built. Water will be carried through these pipes. 21

Steps ✘ After 5 years, wind turbines and solar cells will be installed to generate electricity. ✘ More facilities being constructed ✘ Colony on Mars is established. A helipad will be built for safe landing.
