Marking and Measuring Tools
MR LEONARD
Basics • Every Woodworking project begins with pencil lines
• Marking out is this first step in furniture making and without it the development process would be impossible • Before beginning to cut we need guidelines or pencil lines • Measure twice cut once.
MR LEONARD
First Steps • The very first step that needs to be done
when a piece of wood is received is marking the FACE SIDE and FACE EDGE • These are simply in the shape of a letter P and a letter V
MR LEONARD
• There are many ways in which we can mark
out a work piece from a simple pencil stroke or using a marking knife.
MR LEONARD
• Accuracy is a critical step in marking out as it can determine the difference between a well made piece and one that does not fit together correctly
MR LEONARD
Steel Ruler • Used for measuring and marking straight lines.
Manly have the measurements in centimetres, millimetres and in meters • In project making we use millimetres
MR LEONARD
Tape Measure • Used for measuring larger surfaces
• Can be used on curved surfaces also
MR LEONARD
Tri Square • It is used to mark and check
right angles. • Always have the stock against the face side or edge at all time
