Unit Context 1. Students will be assigned into small groups, and researching different religions from around the world. They will then create a website that not only gives information about each religion, but also compares them to the other religions. 2. The targeted subject for this thematic unit would be a twelfth grade social studies class. 3. During this unit, students will learn vital strategies in creating a website and teamwork. Because this unit is a group task, they will be working with others and cooperative skills will be used. They will need to use word documents to type their findings on the religions. 4. For this thematic unit, students will be working in the classroom with books, on the computers, and listening/questioning guest speakers that are invited to the class. They will be allowed to use the computers freely to access knowledge of the religions assigned. The library will be used if there are any supplementary books that are needed by the students. Audience 1. In the classroom, there are 20 12th grade students. The class breaks down as follows: a. 8 White students b. 4 Black students c. 4 Latino students d. 4 Asian students 2. My students have knowledge of word processors. The students in my class use the Internet often. The Students have taken a library course as well. The website creator is fairly new knowledge but there is class time being set aside to teach the students how to use it proficiently. The students are also familiar with YouTube incase of any videos being used in their projects. Objectives 1. The goal of this thematic unit is to teach students how to create a website. Students will also learn the skills needed to do research on many levels and develop skills to compare/contrast. Students will learn information about different religions and their customs, beliefs, and rituals. 2. (A) 12th grade students (B) will create a Venn diagram that compares and contrasts the religions assigned (C) using pencil and paper (D) this will be turned in to make sure that the students are on the same page as the instructor. 3. (A) 12th grade students (B) will begin to create a website that provides information about world religions and their common traits to each other (C) using Google Sites. (D) The students will save their website so the instructor can review later. 4. (A) 12th grade students, (C) using Google Sites (B) will create a website that compares and contrasts world religions and gives examples of culture, belief, and customs of each religion. (D) The students will be graded according to the rubric handed out.
Methods 1. Methods for objective 2 will be presentation, discussion, and cooperative learning. I will present information about the world religions that will be focused on for the assignment. There will be open discussion about these religions so the students can exchange ideas about the religions. When they are split into groups, cooperative learning will occur. 2. Methods for objective 3 will be presentation, tutorial, and discovery. There will be guest speakers to present on religions. I will give a tutorial of how to use Google Sites so the students can use it more proficiently. Finally, students will discover how to use the website on their own by using trial and error methods to discover how their website will progress from start to finish. 3. Methods for objective 4 will be Cooperative learning, problem solving, and discussion. The students continue working in groups and finding their places among their group members. They are also problem solving the issues with how their website will look and the content. They is also open discussion among group members of how to attain the best designed website.
