Here are some of the things we learned or did for the month of March: Please ask your child about … Word Study: open syllables with long e and o (me and so), vowel diphthongs (oi, oy, ou, ow); Language: grammar – adjectives (words that describe nouns); action verbs (words that show action); prepositions (words that show where or location) continuous review of sentences structure (capitalization and punctuation) Reading Genres: Non-fiction, informational texts – give facts or real information; Fiction – tells a story, has characters, setting, problem, solution, illustrations, read in order from beginning to middle to end; Realistic (made up story that could happen in real life) vs. fantasy (made up story that could NEVER happen in real life) Reading Comprehension: Comparing non-fiction texts on the same topic – Why do we need to read more than one text on the same topic? (Texts can give us different information or confirm information already learned) Using a Venn Diagram to compare texts (what was the same? What was different?); retelling fiction stories using story elements and key details (character, setting, problem, solution) Writing: Opinion/expository writing - Most influential famous American and why? Thank you letters Math: addition strategy – review of count on, doubles, doubles +1, make 10; 3 addend addition (using strategies and understanding that addends can be added in any order; review of place value and using it to find 10 more and 10 less than a number; time to the half hour; using QDPAC and the best addition strategy to solve story problems; data collection of our favorite famous American and asking and answering questions using the data. Social Studies: Famous Americans (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman,) – childhood, adulthood, accomplishments (what made them a famous American?); American Symbols (Liberty Bell, American Flag, Bald Eagle, Statue of Liberty); Chinese New Year traditions and celebration (special foods to eat, zodiac calendar, lantern festival, lion and dragon dances, the importance of the color red); geography – creating a map with map structures – map key/legend and compass rose Science: Light and sound Health: Dental health care Special Classes: Hawaiian Studies; Library; Japanese; PE; Music Tech: Power Point presentations for American symbols
