Name ________________ Period ___ Making a thermometer Materials Straw, tape, food coloring, clay, bottle Instructions

1. Pour cold water into the bottle until it is about 1/4 full. Raise hand for food coloring. 2. Put a straw in the bottle so that it dips in the water, but doesn’t touch the bottom of the bottle. Seal around it with clay. The seal must be airtight.

3. Tape card to the bottle/beaker and let sit for about 5 minutes 4. Place bottom of thermometer in ice water. Mark water line on card. 5. Place bottom of thermometer in hot water or on burner if glass. Mark water line on card. 6. Clean up. Take apart thermometer, place clay back in can, clean beaker. ________________________________________________________________________
