Feature Story Grandmaster Richard Hackworth Few can claim that they dedicate each day to learning, teaching and promoting martial arts. However, that is exactly what Grand Master Richard Hackworth has done. His enthusiasm, charisma and ability to communicate with people of all ages have made him one of America's most sought after martial arts consultants and seminar instructors. He has won international acclaim as an author and martial artist. His achievements and teachings have been featured in over 1,000 magazine articles worldwide. Traveling the globe, he delivers technical seminars with humor to audiences of all sizes. With an artful way of teaching that is entertaining and motivational, he is known for his ability to impart a vision and clarify a purpose. Combining his thorough research, motivational strategies, humor, wisdom and international perspective, he inspires audiences of students and masters alike. Everyone enjoys his unassuming approach to sharing his wealth of knowledge. He is the owner of the Action Radio Network and Editor of World Martial Arts Magazine. When speaking to Grand Master Richard Hackworth you will find that he is the hands down expert on the history of Hapkido. As well he should be, because no one has done more to unselfishly promote the military art of Hapkido in our lifetime. Most of the Hapkido schools in the USA were being run by former G.I.'s who studied Hapkido for only 1 year during their military tour of Korea. Many of whom either bought high ranks from Koreans here in the USA or just promoted themselves through their own organization. Richard Hackworth decided that if Hapkido was going to truly grow we need to raise the standards outside of Korea by providing Master level training, something that had never been done outside of Korea before. So, he began inviting officials from the Hapkido headquarters in Korea to teach instructor and masters courses in the USA. Many instructors thankfully took advantage of this and learned skills formerly unavailable to them. Usually you could find instructors and masters from nearly a dozen countries at each of the events that he hosted. However, many of the self-promoter "Masters" of Hapkido in the USA would not attend
out of fear of being exposed. Grand Master Hackworth stated that, "It was never my intention to "expose" anyone. Only to educate." And Educate he did. Not only by hosting events but by traveling the world to teach Hapkido. Grand Master Hackworth has conducted seminars in 31 different countries in the last 11 years with no sign of slowing down. He will be returning to Colombia, Ecuador, England, Australia, and Russia in 2008 alone.
Some of Grand Master Hackworth's many accomplishments include: Host of the "Martial Arts News & Entertainment" Radio Show Star of the "Martial Arts Success" Radio Show Star of the "Turning Up The Heat!" New found Martial Arts friends Dominique Zaino and Andrea Stone
At the age of five Andrea Stone came to her father, a Miami veterinarian with a new request. A kindergarten classmate of hers had just started studying karate and after explaining how much fun it was to kick boys around Andrea immediately decided that she wanted to study too. Dr. Stone had studied Tae Kwon do since the 70's so instead of Karate he arranged to enroll his daughter in the Korean Art under Grandmaster E.H. Chung at the Pan American Martial Arts Academy in Miami Lakes. Andrea took to the martial arts like a fish to water and over the next two and a half years practiced 5 days a week until she obtained her first black belt in Tae Kwon do. Shortly thereafter the family moved out of Miami to the small town of Clermont in Central Florida where at the time Tae Kwon do was not offered. Not wanting to quit the martial arts Andrea enrolled in a similar Korean Tang Soo Do dojang and for the next year and a half Andrea re-learned all new forms meeting all of the schools requirements. Eventually she was awarded a first dan in this style as well as achieving academic honors in school. Unfortunately this dojang was later forced to close due to economic reasons and once again Andrea had a decision to make. Determined to continue her training, she decided to try still another Korean art. By now her father had taken up the study of Hapkido under the tutelage of Grandmaster Richard Hackworth at the American Dragon Martial Arts Academy and was granted permission to enter his daughter in his class even though she was only eleven years old. It took another four years of training but at 15 years of age Andrea received her third black belt, this time in HaeMuKwan Hapkido, the first ever awarded by the Korean Hapkido Federation to a girl in the United States. Currently Andrea, who just turned 16 this May is a state champion in FFA competition, an honors student, a spokes model for the martial arts and continues to train in Hae Mu kwan Hapkido. Her interest in boys however has progressed past wanting to beat them up.

The Art of the “Pure Warrior” Sport Tonfa By: Danny Zaino The art of the Tonfa is a forgotten art. My name is Grandmaster Danny Zaino and this is the story of how I took a traditional martial arts weapon and redesigned it for karate competition. It all started 28 years ago when I was in the Army. I left Korea and was sent to my new station in Ft. Bliss Texas. At the time I was studying close to 7 years. I decided to attend a local tournament on base and after my competition I noticed a table where a vender was selling martial arts equipment. The first thing I noticed he was selling were these two wooden sticks that were shaped very unusual and where about a foot a half long with another piece of wood sticking out of it about four inches down which was the handle. What I am describing to you here was a very crude pair of Tonfas, an ancient Okinawan weapon whose handles were sometimes used as a portable rice grinder. The Tonfa also came from medical crutches that were shortened and then used as weapons. Back in ancient times the Tonfas were used in pairs and were made out of very heavy wood. They were mainly held in your hand with the stick part covering your forearm and elbow enabling you to block weapons, spin, and then strike the enemy. After many years of study I would learn that there were all different ways you could operate this weapon. When I picked the Tonfas up for the first time in Texas this was the very first time I had ever picked up a martial arts weapon. At this time I could only operate them with what little knowledge I had and I began competing with them at martial arts events to get more experience. When I did not do well in the competitions I began seeking out training and better methods of using the Tonfa. When I became a Florida police officer they had just come out with the PR 24 side handle baton which all officers had to carry on them during their shift. Basically the PR 24 was a metal Tonfa with a swivel attached to the handle for better maneuvering. I began all types of training with the PR 24 which my department enforced which taught me to see the self-defense aspect of the Tonfa from the law enforcement side but I still wanted to learn the ancient art of the Tonfa. Because of my desire to learn this I started training with Grandmaster Johnny Pachivas from the USKA organization and some of his other instructors who were famous for their skill in weaponry and this enabled me to achieve what I really wanted to learn about the Tonfa which was the tradition and skill of this weapon used in organized Okinawan and Japanese form known as Kata for competition. As an experiment I then began to purchase all different kinds of Tonfas for practice purposes. Yet even with all my hard work and the use of different brands of Tonfas I was still doing poorly in competition and this continued for at least ten years. Then one day I got the idea to make the Tonfas shorter and started sanding the groves of the Tonfas to make it easier to
manipulate during my form routines. At the time most store bought Tonfas came with an oil based shellac which covered the entire weapon and some even had wood oils to rub into them. This gave me the idea to start sanding the finishes off of the handles of the Tonfas which made them slicker and spin faster. This seemed to work quite well so I began teaching my students the art of the Tonfa. In competition they did well and won a lot at tournaments which gave me the fever to start competing again. I started winning but never taking first so I decided to make my own Tonfas and come up with a design all my own. The first thing I did was to seek out a master wood carver who carved the Tonfas form in a way made specifically for sports martial arts. I then started to get more in-depth with the design and had razor type points attached to the ends of the Tonfas to make them also worthy for the street. I discovered that oak was the best wood to use and that is how the “Pure Warrior” Sports Tonfa for tournament competition was created. I realized early on that I had to remove the razor tips off the ends of the Tonfas being used for practice purposes and competitions when I accidentally cut one of my students during a practice session. I decided to keep some Tonfas with the razor tips but only for the street and combat use like the masters before me did. I soon began to develop my own techniques with the Tonfa and my own forms for Karate competitions. I also began teaching hand releases, throws, and tricks with the Tonfas. It wasn’t long before I figured out to add a small tube like piece of metal to the Tonfa handle which helps the Tonfa to spin faster when your hands get sweaty. I then discovered that if you reverse your grip on the Tonfas and hold your hand by the swivel you can operate the Tonfas just as fast as the Knunchucks by actually holding them backwards. I even figured out a way to take care of them by using certain wood oils which preserves the wood and makes the Tonfas last longer. Two other tricks I discovered is that you can train for hours with the Tonfas by using a pair of competition weight lifting gloves and if you sand the handles right before competition it allows you to move the Tonfas much easier so they don’t stick to your hands enabling you to perfect your martial arts form. I found that most martial artists do not really know how to operate the Tonfas correctly and that is why I mentioned at the beginning of this article that the Tonfa is the forgotten art. Everybody loves to pick up a pair of Knunchucks, spin them around and feel cool. They and many other martial arts weapons like the Bo Staff are much easier to operate. But
the art of the Tonfa takes many years of practice and should only be taught by a Master in the art of weaponry. Today my son Tony Zaino competes on a national level with the Sport Tonfas I have designed and is probably one of the best karate competitors with the Tonfas in the world. He has been practicing and competing with the Tonfas since the age of 3. When you decide to learn the art of Kobudo (weaponry) it is important that you learn the correct way to operate your weapon and by doing that your learning of the weapon will become fun and enjoyable. It is also important to learn the history of the weapon you are studying. Once you have done all that you can then test your skills in a martial arts competition. In making the decision to study a weapon and if your choice is the Tonfa, I hope you have as much fun and enjoyment as I have had studying this amazing and unique weapon. I wish you good luck in you adventures an in your studies of martial arts weapons and remember to never stop learning. EVERY YEAR 100,000 Patients In Hospital Die From Properly Administered Prescription Drugs Pharmaceutical Drugs Are More Dangerous Than Terrorism
By: Claire Poulton
Did you know that an estimated 106,000 hospitalized patients die each year from drugs that, by medical standards, are properly prescribed and properly administered; according to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). And an estimated 2 million more suffer serious side effects. On September 11, 2001 almost 3,000 innocent people died at the World Trade Center Terrorism Attack. The 9/11 Deaths ARE very tragic and this report is in no way meant to denigrate the atrocity of the 9/11 cowardly terrorist attack, but consider these comparisons:
1. The recorded error rate of ICU's (Intensive Care Unit) is like the post office losing more than 16,000 pieces of mail every hour of every day. Citizens would be protesting and screaming their lungs out about the "ineptitude" of the USPS, and demanding action to rectify the situation, demanding the termination of USPS Administrators and Employees. 2. Banks deducting 32,000 checks from the wrong bank account every hour, 24/7. Bank customers would be breaking down the doors demanding immediate compensation for their losses, along with the accompanying investigations by Attorney General Offices, the FDIC and other Government Beaurocracies. 3. According to the medical report "Death by Medicine", by Drs. Gary Null, Carolyn Dean, Martin Feldman, Debora Rasio and Dorothy Smith, 783,936 people die in the United States every year as a result of conventional medicine mistakes. This is the equivalent of six jumbo jet crashes a day for an entire year. When this tragedy occurs, maybe once a year, if that, the Media is ALL over the airline company, the FAA immediately sends hordes of investigators out to examine the wreckage to determine the cause. Can you imagine the human outcry if 6 jumbo jets crashed every day, 365 days a year? Probably, those same people would become complacent after the 3rd or 4th week, just like they have become immune to the devastating death toll wreaked by medical errors. 4. Another 1995 study stated, "The iatrogenic [doctor-caused] death rate dwarfs the annual automobile accident mortality rate of 45,000 and accounts for more deaths than all other accidents combined." And that study was issued before the Vioxx disaster killed 60,000 people all by itself. 5. Since 2001 till 2005 (when the report was written), over 490,000 people in the United States have died from prescription drugs, while 2,996 people in the United States died from terrorism, all in the 9/11 attacks; prescription drugs are therefore 16,400 percent more dangerous than terrorism. If deaths from over-the-counter drugs are also included, then drug consumption leaps to being 32,000 percent more dangerous than terrorism. And conventional medicine viewed as a whole is 104,700 percent deadlier than terrorism. Where's the outrage? Where's the demand for investigation? Where are the protestors?
More Importantly, WHERE IS THE MEDIA? MEDIA ATTENTION to this abomination is Non-existent! No one is protesting. No one thinks about it. Why? Because the Pharmaceutical Companies, the Medical Profession, and their paid lackeys, the Federal Government Agencies Don't Want You To Know! Next year's budget for the Department of Homeland Security will exceed $34 billion. By comparison, this country spends about eight times that amount annually $282 billion on deaths due to medical mistakes. And that's a conservative estimate, because only a fraction of medical errors are reported. They ALSO Do not want you to know that: Most Prescription Drugs are Unnecessary. As much as the drug companies want you to believe that it's normal to take medicine every day, it's not. It is the rare exception that you should ever need to take a drug. Most, if not all, physical conditions can be alleviated with Life-Style changes and a massive demand for Healthy Food, not the plastic food we've been brain-washed into believing is "Good and Beneficial To Health". Would You Take Cocaine or Heroin? Probably you wouldn't. Illegal drugs, including cocaine and heroin, are responsible for an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 U.S. deaths per year. Yet, BILLIONS of $$$'s are spent each year by the Government and Law Enforcement Agencies to Curb the Sale and Use of Illegal Drugs. Take Back Control Of Your Own Health You should work with your health care provider (preferably a holistic or naturopathic one) in determining which of your prescriptions are really necessary. If you are suffering from any one of the following common conditions, drugs are probably not the answer and can be treated without prescription drugs more effectively, more cost efficiently AND with FEWER Complications and Side-Effects:

Three Keys to a Successful Acting Career By: Richard Hackworth If you want to be an action movie star and develop an acting career you must take action. If the glamorous parties and the invites are not enough enticements, just look at how much each of the Hollywood hotties are earning every time they have a movie. Some star's annual income can actually feed a state and maybe even a nation. But becoming one is not as easy as it looks. Some people feel that you only have to have the "look" in order to break into the action movie industry but sometimes, this is not true. In fact, there are a lot of really classic beauties out there who have not made a name for themselves and have only remained as supporting actresses. The same goes with pretty boy actors who have to contend with two-bit roles. Do you remember Jean Claude Van Damme's first movie role? It was as a back up dancer in a little known move called "Break Dancing 2 Electric Boogaloo". Everyone starts at the bottom. Even in the block buster Hollywood movie scene there are actresses who do not have the classically-accepted features but have become instant stars like Reese Witherspoon and Angelina Jolie. Comedy actors Jim Carrey and Ben Stillers are not actually classically handsome but their bank-ability in the box office makes them handsome. SO what's the secret to having a great acting career? How do you develop one and how do you break into the action movie star scene? 1. Media Exposure Nobody will know you if you are constantly hiding behind the scenes. If you want to be an actor or an actress, you have to go out there and make sure that you get people's attention. As much as you can, star in as many quality projects as you can. Even if the role is not so long and the dialogue is not that much, at least you are there in the film. Some movie stars have started with doing films that are low budgeted. If you are lucky, the movie will become critically-acclaimed and will become your ticket to stardom. This is also why you should choose your roles and movies well. Becoming part of an art film with a great script beats being constantly on camera in lackluster movies. Others have started their movie career in independent films that become cult-classics. One martial arts star told
me how he went into an audition with several weapons and just started running through his best weapons forms without stopping until he was done. He said: "Seeing me in action was going to give them a better impression of what I could do than and interview style audition.“ 2. If at First You Don't Succeed Try, Try and Try Again. A lot of the Hollywood greats right now have themselves suffered from rejection. Before they were stars, they also had to go through casting calls, which necessitated them to endure all the nitpicking of directors and casting manager. The secret is to try and try until you find the role that will fit your personality, the role that will launch you to stardom. After all, nobody became famous in an instant. All had to go through the same route. 3. Eat Right and Exercise Daily to Take Care of Your Appearance. Vain or not, appearance is pretty important to a movie star. This is one area where you will need to work on especially if you want to stand out in the crowd. This does not however refer only to the beauty of your features. When you say appearance, it represents your overall look especially when attending functions and events where photographers are everywhere. If you have the budget, hire a good stylist who can tell you what you can and cannot wear. This is a good way to catch people's attention. Lindsay Lohan became a fashion trendsetter first before she really rose to stardom. Developing an acting career is not easy but it is worth it. All you need to do is persevere, try and work on what you've got. After all, each one of us is already a star on our own rights.
