2:1-20 Special Study

Key Verses: 10 1.

What was the political situation in the Roman world at the time of Jesus’ birth (1,2)? What might be the purpose of Caesar’s decree? What was the impact on the people (3)? The emperor was taking a census at the time. It was for this reason that Joseph had to go to Bethlehem. The purpose for the census probably rooted in fear by the emperor in losing his power or simply he wanted to know where his kingdom was growing. The impact this had on the people is that they all had to return to their hometowns.

2.

What did Joseph do in response to this decree (4a)? Why did Joseph have to go to Bethlehem (4b)? Why did Joseph take Mary as well (5; Mt 1:24,25)? Joseph had to leave Nazareth to go back to his hometown of Bethlehem. Joseph took Mary, his fiancée, because an angel of God had instructed him to do so.

3.

What is the significance of the timing of the baby’s birth in Bethlehem (6; Mi 5:2; Gal 4:4)? What was it like for Mary to give birth to a baby and place him in a manger (7; Isa 53:3)? Micah prophesized of Jesus’ coming and the significance the event would have on the people. Its interesting the way that Jesus came into the world – such a humble beginning to the King of All Ages!

4.

What was the reaction of the shepherds to the angel’s appearance (8,9; Lk 1:12)? What words of comfort did the angel give to them (10a)? What was unique about the angel’s message to them (10b; Nu 23:32; Lk 1:13)? What is the scope of the message (10c; Ro 1:16; Gal 3:28)? The shepherds were frightened at first. The angels said “Do not be afraid”. The angel brought good news to them that the Messiah had been born! The news would bring great joy to everyone.

5.

What does the angel’s message say about the birth of the Savior (11a; Lk 19:10) and his great name (11b; Mt 28:18)? What was the sign of the remarkable birth of the Savior and the Christ (12)? From a human point of view why is this sign so hard to believe? The sign was that Jesus would be found in a manger. This is difficult to believe that the Lord would send his son to begin in such a humble way.

6.

How did the angels declare the glory and power of the birth of Christ (13,14)? What were the shepherd’s humble and faithful responses to the

angel’s message (15-18,20)? How did Mary reflect to all the events surrounding Jesus’ birth (19)? The angels were joined in praise. The shepherds went to find Jesus and they did so and praised God. Mary treasured these moments.

7. In what sense is the birth of Jesus good news of great joy for all people? How is Jesus’ birth good news of great joy for you this year as well?
