LUBRICATION Lubrication is essential to reduce friction and wear between components in an engine. FUNCTION OF LUBRICATION: Lubricatin is an art of admiting a lubricant coil, grease etc between two surfases that are in contactand relative motion. the purpose of lubrication in an engine is to perform one or more of the following function. •To reduce function and wear between the mooving parts and there by energy loss and to increase the life of the engine. •To provide sealing action engine the lubricating oil helps the piston rings to maintain an effective seal against the high pressure gases in the cylinder from leaking out into the crank case. •To cool the surfase by carring away the heat generated in engine components. •Toclean the surface by washing awy carbon and metal particles caused by wear. The ratio of the tangential force to the normal force is defined as the dynamic coefficient of friction or the coefficient of friction . coefficient of friction,f = Tangential force/Normal force LUBRICATION OF ENGINE COMPONENTS: In a reciprocating engine, there are many surfaces in contact with each other, and therfore they should be lubricated to reduce the friction. The principal friction surfaces requiring lubrication in an IC engine are: •Piston & cylinders •Crank shaft & their bearings •Crank pins & their bearings •Wrist pin & their bearings •Valve gear
