Ex) noble gasses (helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon and radon) Limitationsambiguous- typewriter, computer
What is the computer?
4-Methods of defining 1) Defining by genus and difference- Clearest and most difficult method
A term is defined by naming its genus, and then adding descriptive words which distinguish that term from other species under the genus (providing the difference)
Ex) backpack- a bag carried on the back
Ex) logic- the science of reasoning
4-Methods of defining Be careful: 1) Don't exclude too much
Ex) Battle- a hostile encounter between two armies
2) The difference should be an essential one
Ex) painting= a picture drawn on a canvas
3) The difference does not have to follow the genus Ex) trianagle- three-sided polygon
