READING NOOKS BY GEORGENA S. SIL The thriving Bridgewater Bookstore converted four alcoves into cozy reading nooks, where patrons may browse through books before buying. Each nook is furnished with a different style of chair, as well as with a small table made from a different wood (one is pine). A hand-crafted rug with a different design delineates the boundaries of each nook, and a different style of lamp (including a torchiere) illuminates each area. From the following clues, can you determine each nook’s chair, table, rug, and lamp? Cherry Mahogany Pine Walnut Aztec Floral Oriental Trellis Banker’s Candlestick Hurricane Torchiere

1. Neither the banker’s lamp nor the candlestick lamp illuminates the nook with the Louis XV chair. 2. The nook with the candlestick lamp doesn’t have the Aztec or trellis rug. 3. The wing chair, the cherry table, the hurricane lamp, and the f loral rug are in four different nooks. 4. The walnut table, which isn’t paired with the Oriental rug, isn’t with the swivel rocker. 5. The Aztec rug and the Louis XV chair are in different nooks. 6. The hurricane lamp, which is in a different nook from the mahogany table, doesn’t illuminate the club chair or the Louis XV chair. 7. The wing chair, which isn’t lit by the candlestick lamp, doesn’t stand on the trellis rug or the Aztec rug. Solution is on the next page.

READING NOOKS The hurricane lamp isn’t paired with the wing (clue 3), club, or Louis XV chair (clue 6), so it’s paired with the swivel rocker. The table in this nook isn’t cherry (clue 3), walnut (clue 4), or mahogany (clue 6), so it’s pine. The lamp that illuminates the nook with the Louis XV chair isn’t a banker’s lamp or a candlestick lamp (clue 1), so it’s a torchiere. The wing chair isn’t paired with the candlestick lamp (clue 7), so the club chair is, and, by elimination, the wing chair is paired with the banker’s lamp. The wing chair doesn’t share a nook with the f loral (clue 3), trellis, or Aztec rug (clue 7), so it shares with the Oriental rug. The club chair doesn’t come with the Aztec or trellis rug (clue 2), so it has the f loral rug. The Louis XV chair isn’t paired with the Aztec rug (clue 5), so the swivel rocker is, and, by elimination, the Louis XV chair comes with the trellis rug. The table accompanying the wing chair isn’t cherry (clue 3) or walnut (clue 4), so it’s mahogany. The f loral rug isn’t paired with the cherry table (clue 3), so the trellis rug is, and, by elimination, the f loral rug is paired with the walnut table. In summary: Club chair, walnut table, f loral rug, candlestick lamp Louis XV chair, cherry table, trellis rug, torchiere Swivel rocker, pine table, Aztec rug, hurricane lamp Wing chair, mahogany table, Oriental rug, banker’s lamp
